    The destroyer launched a few beams of yellow light in Zanitar's direction. Bacon wondered why Ciara wasn't simply nullifying the spread of the withering infection.

    Bacon watched the two Ennullers fight. If only Quagmire could lure Ciara outside of her fortress, he mused. Then I could help. Oh well. It was fun to watch regardless!

    The destroyer calmly hurled explosion after explosion at the shield. Erif struggled ineffectually against the grasping hands. You hit a sore spot with Onyx But he's not so mad he really wants you dead. The destroyer does somewhat have a mind of his own. The inspector blinked. "Oh dear," he said. "What are you doing, destroyer?" The void-eyed man did not speak, but his servants did. "gathering power," they whispered. "all will be one. their power, their flesh joined to ours..." Uh, sort of. Is that location within The Longest Thread or outside?

    Fair enough. "Hey," called Nogard, angry. "Stop that." "I suppose we must fight after all," rumbled Selppaenip. He charged Falvan, brandishing his katanas. The destroyer pointed at Ista. Yellow light coalesced around his finger, then blinked towards her. On impact, it exploded.

    Tull, Ista, and Erif began to be dragged beneath the ground.

    The inspector was counting the corpses. More and more rose from the ground every second, grabbing their ankles with dry, grasping fingers.

    There is nothing there. Around them and in front of them, more and more hands break free of the soil.

    "YOU WILL JOIN US" The inspector abruptly started moving again, pulling Erif and following Ista in fleeing from the horde. He was muttering something to himself, but what it was couldn't be made out.

    Red light shimmered over the amassed army, knitting together flesh and bone. They opened their mouths and spoke with a hundred voices: "ONYX WILL NOT SAVE YOU."

    A woman stepped forth from the shadows. X's avatar gasped. She had skin of a slightly blueish tint, black hair, and looked so similar to him she could have been his sister. Which was, of course, impossible, as he'd been conjured into being directly by Narrator X. Nonetheless, the resemblance was undeniable. Who was she? And how had she stopped him from manipulating the wind? He tried again to conjure a storm, but the woman made a quick slashing motion with one of her hands. His control abruptly vanished once again. She was smiling slightly, as if she knew something funny that he didn't. "Who are you?" he asked, keeping the uneasiness he felt out of his voice. "Why are you here?" The woman's grin widened into a predatory smile. "You can call me Y," she answered. "And I'm here to kill you, of course." With that, she launched herself at him. Twin blades flared into life in her hand, wickedly sharp knives carved out of what appeared to be solid shadow. X's avatar stumbled back in surprise, barely dodging her first attack. Instinctively, he called the wind, but once again Y cut him off with a wave of her hand. With her other hand, she sliced him across the chest with one of her knives. The pain was indescribable. It felt like his skin was burning, a cold flame that somehow brought with it a feeling of loss. He gasped, falling to the ground. Y seized her opportunity and lunged forward, dagger pointed directly at his heart- And then Nameless burst through the cave opening and tackled her.

    Oh dear Everything stopped. The trees, the guide, the inspector, all as if frozen in time. "You are a fool who thinks they are wise," said the inspector, neutrally. "You. Know. Nothing." That was the wrong thing to say. A hand burst from the dirt. Then another, then another- until hundreds of pale-skinned, empty-eyed corpses began to pull themselves out of the ground. In the distance, a man approached. In his right hand, he carried a sword of silver and blue and black. The destroyer. Nogard wavered slightly. "What... what are you doing?"

    Onyx cannot help anyone, the guide replied in the same neutral voice. I cannot tell you my name. I do not have a name. Onyx cannot help anyone. "Please," said the inspector, alarm creeping into his voice. "If you continue as you are, you may attract the attention of the destroyer."

    The guide's head suddenly snapped towards Ista. What purpose do you have with Onyx? she said in a pleasant, neutral voice.

    Well, Ennuller powers are all based on nullification. Ennullers often have particular specialties: Ciara's seems to be neutralizing magical abilities. So a good place to start would be coming up with a specialty for Quagmire. If you want to, I could do the fight for you to provide a demonstration.

    Not good at all! But Ciara was leaving now. This could be their opportunity!

    Well. This isn't good. Bacon continued to act like a pigeon, but he readied to spring into action. If Tam couldn't outwit Ciara...

    Bacon hadn't exactly intended that, but he supposed it was fine. "Well, I am a clone," he allowed. "So I don't have anywhere else to be, really. You don't want me to leave, do you? Because I'm interested in seeing more of these experiments of yours."

    Bacon was confused of what he'd convinced Sequence of.

    Bacon did his best impression of a mindless pigeon.

    Hmm. It seems you have been derailed. Tell me, where was your destination? "Why are you doing this?" asked Nogard. "None of us want to fight you." [Oh yeah,] said Bacon. [It's fleeing time.] He flapped after Tam, keeping a sharp eye out for any surprises. This operation had gone smoothly so far. If he knew anything about basic narrative structure, he knew that was a bad sign. "Well, if they wipe each other out, it might be good to rewind and give them a second chance. See if a different approach might work. It'd be sad to let all that storytelling potential go to waste, after all!"

    The inspector shook his head urgently. "I don't think Onyx wishes to talk to anyone at this time."

    Nogard paled, glancing at Subversion, who seemed to have fallen unconscious again. If it came to a fight... "Save her," he said.
