  1. The wanderer realized that the choice was between waiting eight hours or following the little creature around the clockwork mechanisms.
  2. "Space or time, either will do." The clock face shifts a few seconds into the future.
  3. Afriend.
  4. "Exactly four seconds past three," explained 536A. "Right now you are at ten and a half seconds past seven fourteen."
  5. I'll join. Hopefully I do better this time.
  6. "Your path - is not correct. There is a different way."
  7. "The Mechanic," repeated 536A. "Deep in - the center. He waits sleeping. You must - wake him."
  8. "The world is out of order." clattered 536A. "It needs to be fixed. You need - to find - the Mechanic."
  9. "I have come to deliver a message, outsider," continued Bell 536A. "It is a request for help."
  10. "Of course. I am bell 536A of the Center. There are countless more exactly like me."
  11. "We can speak in any language that there is."
  12. Alfrend.
  13. 536A came to a halt. There was a quiet tick-tick-tick as it rearranged its sound-making devices. "Hello, outsider," it stated.
  14. The being of chaos did something that he had not done for a very long time. He smiled. Patience, he thought to himself. He had waited long enough for this moment. He could wait a little while longer. --- Bell 536A scurried across the track towards the explorer, jingling repeatedly to attract her attention.
  15. The grand halls of the clockwork universe felt the sting of disarray. They could not feel emotion. But they were perturbed. It was decided that only an outsider could fix what an outsider had broken.
  16. A clockwork beetle scurried off, carrying a message of vital import to the rulers of the universe.
  17. He strode forwards, one step at a time, moving closer and closer- But what was this? A barrier, invisible yet impenetrable, constructed of pure order. He stood no hope of getting through.
  18. And just as soon as that, it was dead, slain by the invader. The gears fell, one by one. Slowly, for now. No one would know what was happening until it was too late.
  19. Elsewhere, a gap in the gears let something in that should not be there.
  20. The explorer went on, venturing ever closer to the center of the clockwork.
  21. But Doomslug's knowledge was limited and incomplete. For the spider had been a critical cog in the gearworks of the universe... and now it was gone. The ripple effects of that decision would not be immediately apparent for much time yet, but they were inevitable.
  22. The clockwork spider crawled across the turning gears, closing in on the aberration. The vacuum-driver-turned-explorer continued to investigate unawares.
