  1. agreed that cuendillar won't make you invincible, but it certainly don't hurt either. the main advantage of it over regular armor is that it could be much thinner, and thus lighter. the problem of armor is that it wheights a lot, and it exhaust you sooner when you fightwith cuendillar you could make an effective armor wheight less than 1 kilogram, so you can wear it under your clothes without any problem. It also would never require any maintenance at all. I was specifically thinking of egwene because she could make one in seconds, for herself and for her closer friends/allies.
  2. That is something else I wondered, on the line of "why don't egwene craft a cuendiollar armor for herself and gawin". it would be extremely light because it could be much thinner than regular armor, the only limit being how thin the blacksmith can work it, and would resist even balefire. it still would have weaknesses because it cannot completely enclose the body, but still no reason not to use one. and egwene can make one in seconds. I was however waiting to read amol before asking questions that could be spoilerirffic like "they did, in amol". For example I was thinking that the people of hinderstap could be gated everywhere and used as kamikaze soldiers, since they will wake up in their beds tomorrow no matter what. Then I read somewhere that mat actually did it. A few spoilers I couldn't avoid reading.
  3. This is one thing that has always left me puzzled, but I'm asking only now. In the war of power, the power was used as a weapon. in the third age, there are still several dozens (probably) power-wrought swords. We can assume they were quite common. But the war of power was fought in an age much more advanced than our. they had aes sedai channeling, they had shocklances, and even if they didn't have future weapon, they could have easily taken some old rifle from a musemum and reverse enginner it. And should have known explosive from civilian use anyway, and plenty of civilian technology that could be adapted for military use. Basically, they should have had advanced armies. So why the hell did they made swords? What was the point, with all the more advanced weapons available? We've seen when grady makes a hammer for perrin that it is a long and tiring process requiring a channeler; they could use the same effort to make a more useful weapon. No matter how well it cuts, a sword stand no chance of even being used in a modern army.
  4. I was trying to cconsider it from the perspective of fertile soil. Assuming that only above 60 degrees the planet can sustain human life, assuming that it is as big as our heart, assuming the farms would produce less because of the ashfalls... I still got nothing. I don't really want to go look how to calculate the area of a section of sphere, but anyway we don'0t know how much was cultivated land, how much was sea and how much was wilderness. around 100 millions, within a factor of 3 (so between 30 and 300 millions), seems the best eestimate anyway.
  5. unfortunately I did not understand much of those videos. I pride myself of having a good english, but if someone speak too fast, or with an accent, or the audio is disturbed, my understanding drops quite quickly. And brandon speaks well most of the time, but every now and then he will pronounce a few words very fast, so I won't understand those. And that will be enough that I will not understand the sense of what he's saying. That said, I liked the part of islands moving, and I laughed hard at the "rysn tried to pretend that her grass wasn't dumb, merely contemplative". And it seems like her master is going to die and the plot is pushign her towards having to lead things by herself.
  6. I am looking in "mistborn trilogy portal".
  7. on www.brandonsanderson.com there's some stuff that gets updated and some that don't. among the stuff that don't get updated, there is no mention of alloy of law. Also, the bars of current project haven't been touched in months. Sometimes they are updated every few days, and sometimes they just stay there. And I check daily to see how much he's written of stormlight 2, and every time i get disappointed Is there any particular reason it is so? or any pattern on it?
  8. the counselor of gods is breeze. other names are ascenddant warrior for vin, last emperor for elend, and lord mistborn for spook
  9. do we have any idea how much weaker is roshar's gravity? is it 70% of our? 50%? That would make a huge difference. I think on heart it would be impossible to make portable bridges like that that could support a chivalry charge. Remember that lower gravity means not only that the bridge will wheight less, but it will also need to support less wheight. On the other hand, lower gravity means that the people will probably be less strong. big muscles are developed to carry your own body. We would be a bit like superman to the inhabitants of roshar. Also, we have no idea what kind of wood they have on roshar. it is possible that they have some wood stronger than what we have on real world. Also, thanks to galladon for the scheme.
  10. I don't think so; there are also ways to lose breath. people who dies too suddenly to pass their breaths, people who don't want to give their accumulated breaths over for any number of reasons, breath stuck into lifeless, awakened stuff when the original awakener died so the breath cannot be recovered anymore... I think an equilibrium would be reached. maybe 5 breaths per person, maybe 50. still not bad as a prospect. but it won't go to infinity.
  11. they never tire, but I don't see the lifeless exerting at peak level for prolonged amount of times. there's only so much breath can empower. Plus, my estimate take into account all the energy a person uses to warm their bodies, digest, think, and do all kind of stuff connected to metabolism. I assumed that not becoming tired and not taking into account metabolic energy would compensate each other. As for breath consumption, I am thinking about lifeless here. vasher states that lifeless don't last forever. even his stone ones wear down with time, and the breath are lost. true, they lasted hundreds of years with maybe 10% lost, but they stood still all the time. I suppose they would wear down faster if they were used for something. If breath was simply stuck into machinery it should not wear down, because breath can be recovered. But I don't believe breath could just empower something forever. Note that even awakener don't use their breath most of the time. most of the time their breath is safe into them. Also, of course you can get improved work if you get your workers/soldiers/whatever give their breath, but unless you are a strong dictator, you have to pay them. Which is again my point, that getting animals or other workers to do the work will be cheaper than buying all those breaths. breath is still very useful for the army, because lifeless don't require food and don't get ill. the biggest problems of armies were food and disease, so a lifeless army is great. I was thinking that a nation could establish breath conscription. Instead of calling everyone to be soldiers for a year or two (conscription in the real world) they call everyone to give their breath for a year or two. the breath is used to make a lifeless. after 1 year you get your breath back (you get the breath from someone who just started his year, actually). that way it would be possible to get a constant number of breaths into the army without bothering too much the general population.
  12. 2 options for that: 1) cross the chasm in a place where you are higher 2) use a sort of ramp so that the bridge will point upwards I have a design in my mind but I am unable to describe it.
  13. the concept should be viable, but far more expensive than more conventional means. human or animal labor should be cheaper. I'm trying to make some rough estimation here. A regular human can produce 100 watt on average. assume a breath can power a device for a similar amount, 24/7. that's around 10 Mjoule per day. around the energy contained in 1 L of gasoline. Today's world energy consumption is roughly 10 billion barrels equivalent per year (a bit dated, but enough for our purposes), a barrel is 160 L, so we need approx the energy released by 5 billion L of petrol per day. That's what will be generated by 5 billion breaths. It would require an entire generation to give up the breath to empower teechnology. Which could be feasible, as a multigenerational plan. However, I think those breaths will be spent with time. they will deteriorate. a lifeless will eventually wear down, and I suppose the same will happen to any machine empowered by breath. For that reason, breath would probably not be a viable energy source for an advanced civilization. And in a midle age civilization slave or paesant labor is cheaper. I mean, ancient egyptians already knew the steam engine, but they never used it for anything useful because laborers were cheaper (also, they were very rough and inefficient as engines; watt did not invent the steam engine, but he invented the thing that increased its efficiency tenfold; before him it was just too expensive to be practical). So, according to my calculation, getting energy from breath would be possible, but economically inconvenient.
  14. talking with my brother, we came to the conclusion that brandon has a table of numbered random oddities (something like 01 women have to cover the left hand; 02 they can't wear colorful clothes; 03 the profession of people is determined by the order of their birth; ...), and that he assign them to people by rolling dices. Of course it's not true, but we had some fun imagining him rolling dices with his worlds. "46: the world will be nice and poeple will be happy. Nonono, I don't like that. let's roll again. I want them to SUFFER! muahahaha!"
  15. to me the ending is happy. the mention of an afterlife makes all the difference. ok, they died, but with a verifiable afterlife that's not that bad. I picture them in the afterlife with kelsier and mare, a happy family. plus, their deaths were necessary to the story. I can see some people not liking the way they fall in love, but I disagree with them. True, in the first book it felt rather artificial. But in book 2 I really got the impression that they would make a fine couple. even when they were growing apart, even if they have nothing in common. sometimes I feel two people are made for each other, and vin and elend gave me that feeling. They complete each other pretty well. also, the way they come to like each other is pretty believable when you come to think of it. both were young, and both had little experience in relationships. To Vin, elend was the first boy she ever met that she could think of as a romantic interest. Before, she only had to worry about not being raped. To elend, Vin was the first girl he met that was intersted in him as a person and not as a way to power or money. it make sense that they are attracted, even if they were horribly matched. many couples among teenagers start with much shakier bases, and break down after a while. So now I think it makes a lot of sense that they fell for each other just for being there, and that they were just lucky to be actually good for each other. Also, I read plenty of books, and sanderson is the only one who writes romance that makes sense from my point of view. Look at the wheel of time. Why the hell elayne, min and aviendha love rand? because the pattern says so. elayne confess falling for rand just after meeting him; just that. Also faile with perrin was basically a taveren influence and very hard to believe otherwise. The only couple I can see as real in the whole series is Bryne and Siuan, and even them not very much. And, while being a fan of terry pratchett, I have to say his way of handling romance is even worse. in his books characters seem to date just because they are supposed to. I'm thinking in particular of moving pictures: for all the book I had no idea what the main characters found attractive in each other. to me they just sounded plain wrong. And plenty of other books I read where the hero and the girl got together at the end of the story just because. quite unsatisfying. Maybe because sanderson has a mind quite similar to mine in many ways, but his books are among the very few fictions where I see people falling in love and can understand why.
  16. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope dalinar survives until the end, or close enough. ayway, dalinar's arc is far from coomplete; he just became highprince of war. That will at least stopping him from dieing at the beginning of the book...
  17. Actually, that is a bit of a puzzle to me trying to figure out what will happen. Szeth will come and try to kill dalinar, protected by kaladin. Szeth is not going to back down unless he has killed his target or has been killed himself. I think brandon said somewhere that book 4 will be dedicated to szeth, so szeth will definitely survive. anyway, I don't see his character being set up that way only to make him die in book 2. Also kalaadin and dalinar's story make no sense if one of them is going to die. well, maybe dalinar could die at this point and pass his legacy to his sons. but i don't see it. so it's a deadly confrontation where, from a story perspective, none can die. I'm waiting to see the trick pulled out of the hat. Unless book 2 will take place in a limited amount of time and szeth will not arrive in the shattered plains before book 3 or 4
  18. I think I would have noticed if he had some powers like kaladin. he got plenty of pow in the book, and never any hint of sudden spikes of new strenght, fast healing, stuff dodging him, or spheres going dun. Some people mentioned some special effect with his plate, but I'm not sure. szeth said plate conflicts with windrunner's abilities and that's why he don't use one. Also, I think with the life he led before his brother's death, a honorspren wouldn't have been attracted when he started to change. Giving away a blad may have made the difference, and is by far the most honorable act he did to date. So, I think if he's going to attract a spren, that is something that just happened, not something happened before.
  19. I don't understand, why would you want to restrain yourself from reading it more? What are the chances that a new book you're going to pick up will be better than twok? I could spend the rest of my life reading nothing but the wheel of time and sanderson's books. and the occasional terry pratchett's.
  20. On roshar, you can gain power by acting and thinking a certain way. Kaladin got his power by his honorable actions. He attracted an honorspren. Dalinar also behaved extremely honorable in the last 5 yeears, and giving away a shardblade is a very big mark on it. What is the chance of him attracting an honorspren too?
  21. Dear sir, I regret I have to inform you that I found this to be the worst jumbled up piece of fanservice I ever read about. Well, except maybe for lollipop chainsaw. or rape & revenge movies. Nothing personal, though. P.S. if you want instead to strive for excellency in that particular ranking, you could add cowboys fighting dinosaurs. possibly inside a spaceship.
  22. Thirteen aes sedai of the weaker level should be able to take rand, but 13 women of morgase's power would probably not be a match for a normal aes sedai. Also, proceding in my reread, I found further confirmations that angreals multiply the power by a small number (in ebou dar elayne find a weak angreal that makes her twice as powerful as nynaeve; that suggests a multiplicative factor of around 2,5, since normally nynaeve is a fair bit stronger than elayne), while sa'angreal by more than 10 and callandor should be around 1000 (when fighting the seanchan in TPOD, rand uses it and feels he can channel "10 times as much, 100, more"; admittedly not very accurate). I also had forgotten that you could use 2 angreals at the same time. rand did so in his fight against asmodean, when both are tapping the choedan kal and rand also uses a small angreal to overcome the opponent. I've never seen it done since, maybe because other people just didn't thought of it (and angreals are rare enough that not many get to try) or maybe because it was a special quirk made possible by the access key.
  23. actually, I enjoied them much more when rereading the trilogy. I could appreciate all the subtle hints to the truth, and all the subtle misdirection menat to make you believe sopmething else - something that is revealed in the climax of the book. Another really nice perk of rereading the mistborn trilogy is paying attention to when characters are being emotionally allomanced. There are several places where the character whith the point of view is influenced wsith emotional allomancy, and is subtle enough that you miss it the first time you read.
  24. zinc compounding would also be great to play blitz chess. but it would be like cheating. Any intellectual work would also benefit a lot from it. i could write my papers in hours instead of weeks, since most of the time is spent to think about what i want to write. oh, and fast mind would also mean fast reading. I could read books superfast, and so do that without spending time. Would definitely be my favourite.
  25. burn pewter to resist pain and get strong. break your shoulder articulation. now you should be able to lick the tip of your elbow. tap feruchemical gold to heal. boast to your friends that you can manage to lick your elbow.
