  1. You can also put extra oxygen in your blood so as to cause yourself embolism
  2. coinshots just exert force vectors to metallic opbjects. force vectors are summed/compounded/whatever is the proper english term for operations with vectors.
  3. Can you store space-time contraction? I don't think so. Even if you could, space is big. I mean, BIG. No, even bigger. Because spacce increases as the cubic power of lenght. And when space is measured in millions or billions of km, that means plenty of space. There are more cubic kilometers in the solar system than there are milligrams of matter on our planet. The chances of getting anywhere useful by going to a random location are small enough that mat cauthon himself wouldn't try it.
  4. I think electrum just makes more conscious the process of choosing a future. Normally, in a fight, you chose according to your instincts. Your instincts have some automation, so they can be predicted by atium. electrum, by letting you see what you're going to do, makes easier to pick a different path. I think you could fool atium without burning electrum. Vin did it. if you concentrate enough on all the possible moves you can make, and make sure to pick random, then you'd probably be immune to atium anyway. But it would be a very expensive thought process, difficult to achieve and maintain. electrum just allows you to do it easily. at least that's my personal idea.
  5. While following a totally unrelated line of thoughts, I came upon this conundrum. Suppose an atium burner is walking in a minefield. When he's close to stepping on a mine, he would see the atium shadow of the explosion, and so he could avoid stepping on mines. BUT, if he avoid stepping on mines, he won't see any atium shadow of any explosion. So he won't be able to dodge the mines, so he will step on a mine, but then he'll see the atium shadow, and so on. So, will he be able to see atium shadows of the explosions or not? I think the most likely scenario is that it becomes akin to burning electrum, where you can see what you're going to do and change it. So the atium shadow of the ground will split, showing both the explosion and the lack of explosion, so he will ultimately be able to dodge the mines. Suppose then that someone placed special mines for seers: those mines, when stepped upon, have 1 chance in a hundred of exploding. So, the explosion is actually quite unlikely, the seer may miss it, and you get one chance to kill him. The explosion is totally random, so what will the seer see when he's going to step upon a mine? will he see maybe 99 shadows of the ground undisturbed, and one of the ground eploding? Will that shadow be strong enough, when overlapped by all the others, to let him see the danger? Because I suppose that split shadows will be fainter, otherwise some dozens shadows (like those seen when two atium burners fight) would just blind you. Suppose then a different kind of mine for seers: since atium lets you see one or two seconds in the future, this mine is triggered to explode three seconds after you stepped over it. Since the seer will have walked far enough from the mine to avoid most damage from the explosion, the mine has a shrapnel blast. Now the seer will not be able to avoid those mines, but he'll still see the explosion in time to try to lay on the ground. Atium should let him see the direction of the shrapnel before the explosion, letting him dodge, but the atium shadows of it would be too fast to let the seer dodge the shrapnels. What do you think of this simulation? do you agree with my conclusions or think that the seer should see something different?
  6. I'm thinking a single bag of atium may be enough to go on for 300 years for marsh. A bag is several kg (at least, I envision it as a sizable bag, not a pouch). An atium bead is a few grams at most. A prisomer in the pits of hatsin produced a bead every weeek, and there were a few hundreds prisoners at the pits on average. That would mean a production of no more than 1 kg per week, or 50 kg per year. 90% of that went stored away, most of the rest got distributed among the houses. So the lord ruler could prolong his life with a few grams of atium every year. A few kg could easily last three centuries. Also, it was mentioned somewhere that inquisitors have their lifespan increased, and that would reduce the need to burn atium. And of course harmony can make more atium fopr him anytime he wants. Only one thing I wonder: to do the atium rejuvenation trick, you need the capability to use feruchemical atium. Marsh got his powers from spikes. Why the hell would ruin spike him with feruchemical atium?
  7. From TPoD, chapter 6 "tired was no longer in it; her muscles were water". Referred to elayne, when she's battling the seanchan. Note that she didn't do anything physically tiring in that day. she marched a few hours, she stood while using the bowl of the wind. She didn't run around or anything. That proves pretty well that channelers feel physical exhaustion when channeling. Mental fatigue don't weaken the muscles. At least, in all my university exams, in all my chess tournaments, I've never felt weak in the muscles, even if sometimes I had troubles focusing. On the other hand, you rigthly point out that sevveral aes sedai aren't very fit, and it is never mentioned that they have problems channeling longer. It may be because no one explored much on prolonged channeling, what with the risk of burning out; it may also be that the fatigue of channeling is independent on your physical fitness, even if it exhaust you physically. Maybe channeling costs you a fraction of yoru physical endurance, no matter how much that is.
  8. Could be an intersting read, and would probably be short enough. However, if I were to pick a fictional document to read, I'd take the words of founding. They would be awesome. If I had also the wot universe available, I may be tempted to pick the whole Karaheton cycle, the prophecies of the dragon. If nothing else, because they are at least 400 pages long, so I'd have plenty to read, and with afterknowledge of the events I would be able to understand them. I'd especially like to see all the foretellings that were needed during the breaking to prepare the ground for rand ("and lo, thou shalt send the aiel on a journey alone..." "and in this place you will build a massive fortress, and in the heart of it you will put callandor with a prrecise web pritecting it..." and so on and so forth). I like to get a "behind the scene" look. Of course, that would be if those ddocuments actually existed. Brandon may be able to write the words of founding, but there's no way he can write 400 pages of prophecy about rand.
  9. I think channeling causes physical exaustion. the way it is described is not that of mental exhaustion. The scene that comes to my mind is that of aviendha and elayne escaping from the seanchan at ebou dar. The way they feel match how they would feel if they had run until they collapsed, not if they were mentally fatigued. Mental fatigue is totally different, at least the way I have always felt it. So channeling appears to cause physical exhaustion. That is what makes me wonder if physical endurance is related to channeling longer. But I don't remember a single line in the books addressing the matter of channeling endurance. Maybe even sanderson don't know it, I don't think notes were left about it.
  10. Stamp letuce into bacon before eating it. That would actually be a useful way to eat tasty food without getting health problems, if not for the fact that you'd have to swallow it whole, since chewing would break the stamp. And it would be almost impossible to make such a stamp in the first place. I wonder if "Some scientist tampered with my dna to see if he could hae a plant sprouting bacon, I am the result" would be a believable enough stamp to last on the lettuce. Alternatively, could you stamp the plate to contain bacon? that would be more believable, but not sure if it would last once you lift the food. If you're a woman, stamp yourself so your time of the month is not today. Every day. That also seems too useful for this thread. Anymmate a puppet to squeeze the acne on yoru back.
  11. I've been wondering, channelers that channel for prolonged time get physically tired. Channelers that do physical exercice can channel less srtrongly until they have rested. So, do physical endurance help you channel longer, or channeling exhaustion has nothing to do with your muscles resistance? Will you be able to channel longer if you run marathons? On the other side of the approach, do repeated prolonged channeling increase your channeling endurance (could be done throught a circle, to avoid the risk of burning themselves that comes from channeling when exhausted)? Would it also increase your physical endurance? I can totally see the aes sedai running around the white tower to build up stamina. may be one of that many things that are effective but weren't done because of tradition.
  12. Everyone has flaws, and I am no exception. However, I learned to accept and live with all of my flaws. In fact, many of them I ended up finding amusing. And I don't do anything really bad anyway: if I did something really bad, I'd try to fix it, because i don't want to be a bad person. Except that my opinion on what is really bad is different from that of anyone else. There are a few mild flaws that are common in people and that I really dislike. I'm pretty sure there's something in what I do that other people consider important, but to me is minor. So, in someone like me, I have someone who has no major flaws. And I can't really blame him for those he has anyway, because how can I blame him for something that I do myself? And then there is the comunance of interests. I don't care about most things normal people enjoy, and I enjoy many things that most people do not. It is very rare for me to find someone who shares my own interests. Last, I have a strong nonconfrontational streak, and I can discuss pretty much anything without getting angry if we have a disagreement. At least unless the other guy starts being aggressive on me; then I start fighting like a wounded, cornered animal. But that is never going to happen if the other guy behaves like me. Aww, I have the same complex. But I quite like it, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I mentioned earlier how I'd like to take vin as a little sister. On the other hand I've never met a really broken girl, just some girls who were a bit on the sad side. Not sure how it would turn out with the real stuff.
  13. I don't understand why poeple have issue with finding people too much like themselves. I love people who are much like me. I know a woman who's very much like me, and I call her big sister. she's 20 years olders than me, and married, or I would have definitely tried to date her. my best friend is also a guy very much like me; if I were a girl, I'd definitely try to date him.
  14. maybe they would just use emotional allomancy on the kandra. the kandra feel no effect form slight emotional allomancy, so they could just burn zinc at irregular intervals and ask the prisoner whether he feels something. Another option is of course that they can feel the spikes.
  15. That's different: those are scenes that were deleted after the plot was altered significantly. For example the fool prince in elantris, who got cut out entirely, or the variations on the prologue of mistborn, where the evolution of the sequence is shown. Those are chapters that don't fit into the actual narrative anymore. What I was thinking of was chapters that fit into the current narrative and got cut out solely for pacing reasons.
  16. I read that sanderson was worried that stormlight 2 was proceeding too slowly, and he should have to cut scenes for pacing reasons. Pacing is important because if the story goes too slowly, regular readers will lose interest in it. However, there are also the diehard fans, who will not care if the story is slow and will appreciate the extra bit of caracther interaction even if it don0't further the plot and don't give much characterization. So I'm thinking, brandon could release, after the book proper, a special extended edition (ebook only, probably) that contains all the scenes cut for pacing reasons. All the interactions with the secondary characters that were deemed too unimportant to the main plot, all the info dump that regular readers don't care about but we do. Wouldn't that be great? Any chance of getting something like it?
  17. And so the stormlight archive, that had the potential to be one of the best fantasy saga in generations, ends up in a dumb anticlimatic way as the big bad of the series die of deus ex machina. Sanderson, shaken with the waste of his artistic talents, commits suicide. Angry sanderson fans then storm your house and exact bloody retribution on you. In your last words, you thank them for sparing you the agony of living your life with the burden in your conscience. I wish all the ten stormlight books were already written, with all the great care they ddeserve. Think of it as sanderson pending years to write in an improved bendalloy bubble and releasing all the books after what, on the outside, seem like a few hours. THink also all his alpha readers and editors are inside that bubble working with him, too. And of course I want to get to read them all.
  18. I have been under the impression that to make the scene with the explosion and the one with the moving bullet realistic, you need much more than an 8x acceleration. Someting like 100x is what is needed. Possiblly more, for the explosion. I dopubt they had more than 1 second from the start of it to the moment they were swept up, and they talked for at least one minute before managing to escape the room.
  19. szeth can hold stormlight less than kaladin because he was nerfed, since he was clearly too overpowered. sorry, had to say that.
  20. siri, marasi and shallan would be interrsting for me. All are ok people to have around and are on the intellectual side. Probably it won't work with any of them. marasi and shallan are too concerned with what is proper and what is not, and siri is too fickle. Vin deserves a special mention because i would not want to date her (we have nothing in common and she has horrible issues) but I feel very protective of her, so she may easily become something akin to a little sister for me.
  21. I also expected more from moiraine, even if, honestly, if it wasn't for her the armies of the coalition may have started to kill each other. so she played an important part. I still don't understand how egwene can be so honorable when among aes sedai or wise ones while behaving like a spoiled brat with anyone else. And thom merrilin is the most badass guy ever! he don't have any special power, yet alone he killed the prince consort of andor, the king of cairien, at least a couple of tairen high lords and at least 5 trained channelers in battle. and we don't know how many else. with no channeling, fancy terangreal, or tar access.
  22. I read it a bit late cause I had to complete my third reread first. Awesome book, maybe the best of the saga. Totally epic, but in a justified way. I don't like in fiction when characters go badass just for the sake of it, for showing off to the public. I like people to do it for sound plot reasons, and in amol you only have to pick. "I didn't come here to win, I came here to kill you" is so great! And everything androl does. Many of those things I already thought on my own (like opening a gateway in front of the enemy with the exit behind him, so that he would shot himself), some I wondered about but wasn't unsure would be possible (like opening horizontal gateways), but opening one to the middle of a volcano is something I failed to imagine. Every chapter involving mat or tuon was so funny, I rarely laughed that much. However, it also felt like it's not finished at all. There's just so much still hanging in the air! Will tuon consider good the token agreement she had with egwene, that any channeling woman could choose to be aes sedai or damane? Could the seanchan coexist peacefully with the other people? What did hawkwing told tuon? Was he pissed because of the slavery? Did he approve of it? After all, he sent a big army across the ocean just on the offchance that there may be some island to conquer, and besieged tar valon for 20 years. he wasn't a nice guy. How much change will mat and min bring? I expect the seanchan culture will never be the same again after those two had heir chance to meddle in it. And what about the wise ones kept damane? What of shara? What of the poeple there? will they be conquered? are they still in turmoil for the dragon? will they remain an oppressive system? How long will the dragon peace hold? What will happen in andor, with the two rivers now being ruled by the husband of the queen of saldea? what will the windfinders do with their square mile of land? Will their ships still matter now that there's traveling? What about the shaido? Will elayne find birgitte again? What will olver do? what will rand do? will it be known he survived? what will happen when his harem start looking for him? will the aes sedai be strong or will they divide again? Admittedly, the answer to that depends on how long cadsuane lives (and nice to see someone getting the better of her for once! "find some fool to raise amyrlin - oh crap!"). Well, moiraine would also do very well. Will Setalle find out that someone managed to heal severing? And annoura? will she be all right again, or she will cut open her veins with nynaeve and damer flinn in the next room? And who was nakomi anyway? And then I have plenty of technical question about gateways. How do they relate to perpetual motion? What happens to gravity when you can drop an item throught a hole in the floor and have it reapper high in the sky? What happens to the potential energy function there? can you open one to space or to another planet? Or to the core of the heart? Given it's mostly iron, with a smattering of noble metals, opening one for a few seconds at a time would be a great way to extract resources. I know, the world goes on, there are neither beginnings nor endings, but still I would have liked more resolution. This has definitely NOT quenched my thirst for more wheel of time books. I would want to read more, MORE, MORE! Too bad it won't happen.
  23. I think the real situation is even more complex. IQ and intelligence are two different things, and having good memory do not imply always having good memory. I see it on myself every day of my life. For memory, I can read a textbook twice and then take a university exam and pass it with a good mark. I also remember more than most after the test, and I am good at most memory based games. And yet, if I am introduced to three people in an evening, chances are I won't remember more than one name at the end of the day. If I have an appointment for the day after tomorrow, I generally forget it if I don't write it down. And writing it is not enough. I have to make sure that I would stumble upon the note (generally putting it on my pillow, or over my clothes), otherwise I would just forget about the note. I have an IQ over 140, because it is calculated with mathematical tests, and yet for many things not connected with mathematics and logic I am no better than average, and sometimes lower. Even in mathematics I wasn't constant. In the annual games of mathematics I was always best or second best of the school, and until 13 years I had top marks in math without ever studying (and without paying much attention at lessons too), but in the high school I was no better than average, despite starting to study. And I still was great in the annual games. Same with physics, I was good at the games but barely reached sufficiency otherwise. Turns out I have a strong intuitive understanding, that helps me with the games and with intermediate school mathematics. But if I can't grasp intuitively an argument, I am no better than anyone else. With university level mathematics, I am definitely bad. I am also a strong chess player, but with very alternate results. I am the strongest of my club by a fair margin, and on a good day most other players would consider a good result to defeat me once in the evening. And yet sometimes I have a bad day, and I lose more than I win. I still remember a day when I lost twice consecutively against one of the weaker members of the club, after he played a weak opening that gave me a distinct advantage. Once I realized how poorly I was playing, I started to laugh and I invited everyone to play, because "it was their good chance to beat me". And I felt no different than other evenings. So, Taravangian's condition may be an improvement for me At least he can take a math test and see how he will do for the day. Me, I can stat playing bad in the middle of a game. Before you ask, I don't have asperger or any other of those strange syndrome. So, I don't think intelligence can be measured in any meaningful way, and most people will have both genius and dumbass moments within the same day. Come to think about it that way, taravangian is not THAT diffferent from regular people. He probably has stronger fluctuations.
  24. The part about him setting math problems in the evening don''t make much sense. He could not do that on a stupid day. Would make more sense if he had a book full of math problems. Anyway I like the idea, and also the way he coped with it.
  25. Yes, I was already linked to that, but it was not my goal: that list divides the channelers into different levels of comparable strength, but it says nothing on how much stronger is a person of level 9 compared to level 8. 10% stronger? 50%? twice? And how much an angreal increases that? The question was intersting for me because it allows to say how many weaker channelers need to link to equal a stronger one, or how many people you can take with an angreal. It let me figure out the power level involved in a fight, something that the list linked do not do.
