I could see that happening. Though at this point I have no idea what kind of resonances could be produced from that. I believe it was confirmed that Shallan's Mnemonic ability is the lightweaver resonance, and Jasnah's sense of direction if the Elsecaller resonance (please correct me if I am wrong. I know there was a bunch of backing and forthing over that, so I could be recalling incorrectly). Also apparently

I do not believe Wax and Wayne's resonances have been revealed yet

So assuming I recalled everything correctly, then I have no clue how to reason what resonance would pop up for what combination of powers lol

Jasnah's resonance has not been confirmed (I don't even remember a discussion about it).

Wayne's resonance has not been revealed either (his acting is confirmed to not be magical).  Wax's resonance is

    his steel bubble.

In my opinion, none of the resonances are match up particularly well with the input powers, so it makes it impossible to guess.  If you squint, sometimes you can make a connection (e.g. Kaladin "attracting" people and "binding" them to him -> lots of squires), but only in hindsight.  No clue how light + transformation yields cool memory powers.

Ooh, good point.  So if we assume that 4 of 10 surges is too much (not unreasonable), Im curious what would happen if the two orders shared a surge.  Might they get a resonance between the three? Might there be something akin to a Resonance effect from having two different versions of the same Surge, in the example of a Windrunner/Bondsmith that both get Adhesion but apparently will sometimes use it in different ways.  I could see Spiritual Adhesion giving the WindSmith more conscious control over their Squire Connections, for example.

There's a recent WoB that clarifies that you still have resonances when you have lots of powers, they're just attenuated too much to be useful.  If I had to guess, I would say that the boundary between usable and useless resonances lies between three and four powers.  So, for three powers, you'd have three different, very-attenuated resonances (one for each pair, maybe a fourth for all three combined).

*Hesitantly* Everybody does, but they're not as pronounced.

Is that because they just have so many powers?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yeah.

The hiding and surviving is only tangentially related to the Shard's intent:

    Brandon Sanderson

The intent is related but only tangentially. Mostly it just knows what's going on and is smart enough to get out of there.

Wait.  What are these abilities?  I was under the impression that each type of aviar only had one ability, thus why Sixth was using multiple birds (because he wanted multiple abilities).

Eshonai overpowered Adolin during the fight. He only won because he outsmarted her. The Parshendi armor was barely damaged, so it was far from a dead Plate. Moreover, we need to keep in mind that inside it is a Stormform, the most powerful ever. Yet he still expected her to be dead, meaning the fall was beyond lethal.

I called it "dead" Plate/Blade to distinguish it from a Knights Radiant Plate/Blade.

Regardless, the point was that Eshonai wasn't a Surgebinder, she was in Shardplate.  So she was unable to breathe in Stormlight.

Regarding the "inconsistency" debate.  You're listing things you feel are inconsistent, which is obviously completely fair.  But also subjective, as it's really just questioning the direction that Brandon chose to go with things.

Most people, however, think of objective mistakes when you use the word "inconsistent."  Like continuity errors, or things that work differently in different parts of the book (e.g. mass-preserving vs volume-preserving Soulcasting).

There are even larger gemstones that hold a charge for even longer(they are just not used as currency).  A surgebinder can move stormlgiht between gemstones.  So Szeth could have gotten a huge gemestone(like the gemhearts from the casmerefiends for example) and tranfered some it if's stormlight into a smaller gemstone for convenience.  Also a week is more of an average.  Some gemstones hold for a bit longer.

Where does it mention this?  I must have missed it.

From every mention in the 1st 2 books, it worked in a way that the damage is done 1st and the repairing comes after. No shielding effect. So it's easy to conclude that if someone is dead fast then there's no chance to heal. Now, we remember that Adolin expected to kill a full Shardbearer just by pushing her down the chasm. There's no indication of the chasm's height where Eshonai fell & where the pair fell. By just the pictures of the Plains, I assume that they're roughly the same height.

There's a difference between a Shardbearer and a Surgebinder.  Shardbearers have Plate an/or Blade, but dead Blades/Plate do not give them the ability to breathe in Stormlight or heal.

Er... what is a WoB? Words of Brandon? Anyway, his answer is interesting. If 'the process of breaking the bond' was started by Kal making a controversial statement and his wrongdoing, then I wonder when the bond was initiated and what caused it? IIRC, when he was young he's already felt 'a rush' when picking up a stick to fight farmers.

Yes, Word of Brandon.  There's a repository of them that we maintain called The Arcanum.  It's pretty nifty - you should check it out (although fyi, there are Oathbringer spoilers there).

Well, that's a very convincing explanation from the team. Still. There's like no explanation at all from the 1st 2 books about the bridges, and I feel like they came up with this new info when pressed by fans. It's like fans began asking a lot about the bridges in the mail, and Brandon said to his team: "We need to address this sht". As they brainstormed, Peter suddenly stood up: "Hey, they asked how heavy it was, right? Now look, we haven't mentioned about how strong gravity is, hehe" and another gal: "What about deus-ex soulcast? We haven't used that plot device on the bridges yet". So and so...

Brandon puts a ton of time and effort into his worldbuilding, especially Roshar.  As others have mentioned, the reduced gravity was something that was settled on well before the books were released.  It's how he was able to have these giant monsters (i.e. the chasmfiends and other greatshells) exist at all.  He cares a lot about grounding his works in as much real-world physics as possible, where he can.  He even worried about red shift when designing the speed bubbles!

Some of them, while wonderfully explained, don't mean that they're now not inconsistencies at all. For example, Sadeas with all his "weaknesses" like that should not be portrayed as an dangerous eel or something. It leaves us a feeling that he was just used as a plot device to propel the story through 2 books, and now his role is done as the new arc of Desolation has descended upon everyone, he's killed very conveniently.

Or Shallan's curiosity. Previously, Sanderson described she had been distracted even when her own life is on the line, (fractions of) seconds before being killed. Veden or Alethi or whatnot, when your existence is being threatened then it's really, very big deal. Like, the HUGEST deal. It demonstrated how strong the scholar mind was. And we humans are super good at procrastination, or delaying important things for present pleasurable distractions even though we know those crucial things will benefit us a lot. Sounds similar to this 'save the world' situation?

Also keep in mind that Shallan had no specific countdown like Dalinar. While she knew that Urithiru was the key, she was under no pressure when she joined the army. Only near the end of the march that Dalinar suggested that her discovery could be a lifeline for his troops. So closing herself in a carriage and reading our book (er, I mean Words of Radiance) nonstop for more than a week while a spectacle was happening right outside is just nonsense. Remember, some of us Sandersonites here completed this heavy tome in, like, 2 days. Must be the same case with her.

While these things may feel inconsistent to you, that doesn't make them inconsistencies.  They're not objectively inconsistent, as evidenced by the people disagreeing with you.

People interpret things in different ways.  For example, it feels inconsistent to you that Sadeas would goad Adolin because you think it's obvious that Adolin would try to kill him.  However, there were a ton of people on the forum who cried foul because Adolin murdering someone in cold blood felt extremely out of character to them.

Wyndle's comments are certainly evidence toward that conclusion.  And since we have a complete lack of evidence pointing toward any other type of spren, we should consider them the most likely of all the candidates.

I see where you're coming from, but the question doesn't imply any restrictions, so why would Brandon's answer. They clearly talk about it on an 'of them all' level. If that includes the Shards is, like I said, disputable. It's not clear that it doesn't though.

I think it's pretty clear, once you factor in our knowledge of what happens during Ascension and the sheer magnitude and scope of the Shards.

Plus, it's pretty common, to exclude Shards when answering questions, as they would automatically win almost all "who is the most [something] in the cosmere?".  For example, if a hypothetical WoB went like this:

    Quote

    Questioner

Is Hoid the most powerful in the Cosmere?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, Nightblood has him beat by a long shot.  The Lord Ruler and Susebron may also give him a run for his money.

    Questioner

How can a sword be more powerful than Hoid?

    Brandon Sanderson

Nightblood absorbs some Investiture each time he destroys something, so at this point he has way, way more raw Investiture than anything else.  Hoid's more of a Jack of all trades - he has collected various types of Investiture from across the cosmere.

Nobody would be confused about whether or not Brandon was considering the Shards.

Brandon has said that the Arcanum Unbounded leather bound (probably out in 2026 gulp!) will have the Nalthis essay not the Warbreaker leather bound. :(

Brandon has said a lot of different things about how the Nalthis essay will be released: the paperback Arcanum Unbounded, a newsletter, the leather-bound Warbreaker, and now the leather-bound Arcanum Unbounded.  So I wouldn't take that most recent WoB as gospel.

It is not normal to refer to gods when asked anything because we don't have them floating around. The Shards are still persons and I don't see that restriction you mentioned in the WOBs. It's a possibility, but to straight out say that he refered to non-Shards as if that was obvious is wrong.

What I meant was Brandon only mentioned Hoid, Khriss, and Nazh.  He didn't refer to any of the Shards.

Also, I would dispute the classification of Shards (Vessels) as people, but that's getting pretty off topic, so I won't go into it.

    1 hour ago, Elegy said:

I'm not saying I don't believe that at all. It's just factually wrong to say that Brandon was clear on this, which was my point. Besides, I think we have gone a bit too far abroad. The question whether or not Khriss knows more than this or that deity is not exactly relevant to this thread's main topic, nor is it relevant for my answer in my first post. Khriss might or might not know more or less than a Shard. She still knows more than at least almost everyone else, we have that clarified and we can draw conclusions from that. Almost the entirety of this thread is already a discussion about technicalities that, in the end, don't really matter for the thread's topic.

    Welcome to the Shard!

  11. 7 hours ago, Elegy said:

So I don't know how else to interpret that, as weird as it sounds.

Both of those WoBs refer only to living beings.  The Shards are in a different category.  It's perfectly normal to not refer to gods when asked "who's the most X in the universe?"

There's no way that the non-Shards know more than the Shards (excluding just-born Harmony).

When it comes from pushing or pulling I think any part bronze would do the trick on a cheaply made earing with outside breaking off(which happens especially with silver witch tarnishes rapidly).  However I believe that Yomen tested the ratio.

Yomen did test the earring (as he revealed in the quote I posted), but said nothing about the ratio between the metals.

Also, even if the earring was mostly bronze (which is not specified in the books) and a portion of the outer silver was worn away (which is also not specified), it wouldn't have mattered because aluminum shielding works as a field:

    Quote

    Questioner

Is aluminum shielding from emotional Allomancy strictly line of sight? So, can someone in the basement bypass somebody’s aluminum hat on the first floor

    Brandon Sanderson

No, they could not. You just put enough aluminum there and it disrupts.

    Questioner

So it disrupts like a field.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yep.

Do you have a source for "mostly"?  I don't recall them specifying the ratio.

Regardless, the outside of the earring is silver.  If silver functioned as aluminum, it wouldn't matter what was on the inside - it would shield it.

Also from Hero of Ages chapter 54:

"Which is why," Yomen continued, "I am so curious as to why you would bother with an ornament such as this. I have had it tested. Silver on the outside, bronze on the inside. Why those metals? One useless to Allomancers, the other granting what is considered the weakest of Allomantic powers.

    1. Singers lived peacefully on Roshar with spren and Highstorms. Fabrial's could have existed and be in use.

    2. Humans lived on Ashyn and based on what we know of the Silence Divine they had a virus/bacteria based Investiture that granted powers. (it wasn't always planned to be that type of magic)

    3.  Honor and Cultivation are on Roshar.

    4. Odium was traveling the Cosmere Splintering shards starting with Ambition whome he wounded and chased after then took out Devotion and Dominion. (he could have ended up on Ashyn and pushed them along to destroy the planet, but we dont know if a shard was there or not and I dont see Odium needing to destroy a planet that doesnt have a shard there already)

    5. the humans from Ashyn destroyed the planet using what we are calling the Dawnshards or a form of Surgebinding. (could just be using known words to refer to a lost magic system)

    6. the Humans were transferred from the destroyed planet to Roshar using a not fully explained process that Brandon is still working on the mechanics of.

    7. the gods (Honor and Cultivation) told the Singers to allow the humans to live in Roshar and the Singers granted them the land now know as Shinovar.

    8. we know many of the Heralds were alive on Ashyn and they were still alive when the first desolation started.

    9. Odium Invested some of the Singers to become the fused making the war un-winnable for the Humans/Voidbringers as they could essentially possess new bodies and continue fighting. Plus Thunderclasts would be difficult to defeat pre-shardblades

    10. Honor Created the Honorblades (and thus the Stormlight Surges we know today that are used by the Heralds and proto-knights Radiant. Referring to the 10 pairings of powers and insuffion of Stormlight directly) and the Heralds and the Oathpact is forged. (unsure if the Honorblades were made for the first desolation or after they broke pact the first time. I think before)

    11. The fused are bound to Braize by the Heralds and Odium is also bound partially by the Oathpact but largely from Honor directly. (I think Odium being invested in the fused being a part of the reason)

    12. The Oathpact doesn't hold forever as Heralds give in to the torture and the loophole in the Oathpact allows the heralds to leave thus freeing the Fused to to the same. However once the Fused are killed again the Heralds can take up the Oathpact again and the cycle of Desolations continue. the line defining sides and who is now called the voidbringers are blurred

    13. during the Desolations the Fused learn how to use voidbinding to combat the Herald's use of Surges and the first non-herald humans starting bonding True Spren who mimicked the Honorblade's use of Surges to help in the fight.

    14. the Knights Radiant were formally organized by Ishar and the Heralds became the begrudging patrons for the 10 orders.

    15. the Knight Radiant would discover the truth that the humans were the invaders and the Singers were the Original inhabitants and fear their powers could destroy Roshar just like their Ancestors destroyed Ashyn, but Honor would console them and encourage them thus keeping them in line.

    16. Honer getting weaker and starts dying. This is likely due to Odium attacking Honor or the Oathpact being broken so much. Probably both.

    17. the "Final" Desolation occurs were the 9 Heralds who miraculously survived this time decide leave Taln to suffer alone for 4000+ years since he was the only one of them to never break once.

    18. the False desolation happens were Odium and Taln were still sealed on Braize, but Ba-Ado-Mishram started providing voidlight and forms of power to the Singers before being sealed by a strike team of Radiants.

    19. the Day of Recreance happens once the Knights Radiant once again discover the truth of their alien origins, but Honor is raving mad instead of helping them understand or reassuring them.

    20. Honor creates the Visions and charges the Stormfather to grant them to someone worthy and then fully dies.

I believe silver is inert alomantically(same as aluminum).

Silver has neither property of aluminum.  The scene between Vin and Yomen in Hero of Ages chapter 54 confirms that:

    it has no Allomantic effect:

    Quote

Silver. Useless, unburnable silver. Like lead, it was one of the metals that provided no Allomantic powers at all.

    and it can be Pushed/Pulled:

    Quote

Vin eyed the earring. Her fingers itched to grab it, if only to feel metal between her fingers. If she'd had steel, she could have Pushed on the earring, using it as a weapon.

The Question: Isn't the underlined bold text indicates that the "Ones Above" is future Scandrians?

Although Scadrians are one of, if not the, leading candidates for being the "Ones Above," that is not a confirmation.

What Brandon is saying, is that the giant Cosmere crossover (i.e. all the worlds/Shards coming together for the Cosmere endgame) is going to be Mistborn Era 4.  That's the futuristic, space opera with FTL.  Sixth of the Dusk has to be set around that time because of the FTL.  So he's saying that we won't find out more about the "Ones Above" until we get Era 4, which has to come after Era 3, which he's only just started outlining.

P.s. If you use the "Copy" feature from Arcanum and paste it inside a quote box, it'll format the WoB much better, and also include a direct link to the event.

    For example:

    Quote

    Questioner

In Sixth of the Dusk, it feels like it's a crossover...

    Brandon Sanderson

    That is true.

    Questioner

So is it a planet that we've seen before, or...

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. Well, you have seen the people they are calling the "Ones Above".

    Questioner

And you're not going to tell any more?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Nope.

    Questioner

    When will we know?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, fifteen years maybe? Hopefully it won't take me that long, but I only just finished the outlines for Era 3 Mistborn, which is now what we're calling the 1980s, so I haven't even at the moment got the sketches of the sci-fi one, I don't have the outlines and things. So in other words, we aren't to the science fiction era; we're a ways off from that.

  19. Usually this distinction doesn't matter, but in this case, I think it is useful to be specific.  It's not the Shard that produces a Cognitive Shadow - it's the Vessel.  The Vessel's are the beings with the physical bodies who actually die.  The Shard itself is basically just a ginormous hunk of Investiture - it can't be "killed."

So, Harmony could never have a Cognitive Shadow, but Sazed could (but doesn't yet, because he's still alive).
