Zane was the catalyst for the annoying love triangle(i know it's about Vin "choice" more than romance but still annoying not an aspect i would want from the Mistborn when i was first reading) and Kelsier was just waaaay more interesting than him in terms of tortured characters who rose to change things.

Of course Kelsier is way superior to Zane, but I dont think anyone hated Kelsier. I wasnt really bothered by the love triangle, because I never doubted how it would end.

From what we have seen of the surge, which would be Lift using it, it seems to do the same for others as stormlight healing does to yourself. It has however not seen as much exploration as I believe it will get in future books, with two proto radiants known so far to be able to use it. Then again, stormlight healing could also potentially be expanded upon in future books.

I think one of the most interesting things you could do with progression is using it in conjunction with identity manipulation. Healing is based upon on your spiritweb and identity allows you to manipulate your spiritweb. This could allow you to willingly mutate your body. Imagine Renarin rending you like Alex Mercer - except his claws are his shardblade.

  3. @Wyndlerunner I agree, that they have to hire great actors, but Hollywood has a tendency to cast only white people, if they arent specifically forced to look for actors of other ethnicities. Although this is changing, but slowly. And that Stormlight characters don't completly correspond to real ethnicities seems to be a bit to complex for news shows, who would probably just report the whitewashing. And I would hate to see cosmere be bogged down by this.

  4. There are some Do's and Don'ts for adapting the Cosmere.

    Do:

    - Go with a disney-princessesque characteristic for one of the first movies. I would suggest Siri in Warbreaker. It would be a nice contrast with Vivenna and it worked wonders for Wonder Woman.

    - If you start with Warbreaker, wait until Nightblood has been released, so you can make a duology and have Vasher disappear into the cognitive realm towards Roshar as the last scene. So you can tease Stormlight as the big thing on the horizon like Thanos in the MCU.

    - Race- and genderbend some characters. I know controversial, but for example Mistborn is a mostly white, mostly dude cast, which Brandon admitted was an oversight. Diverse movies have mass appeal. If you want to be successful, you need to cast a net as wide as possible.

    - Do turn the novellas ( except Edgedancer ) into a miniseries ( like 1,5 hours each ) after movies are done. Like "Tales from the cosmere". For example you could do the eleventh metal after Mistborn ( The final Empire) or the emperors soul after Elantris. This could also feature White Sand, Sixth of the Dusk and Shadows of Silence.

    Don't:

    - Don't dumb down the magic. Get it in your head, that audiences understand complex systems, if they are well enough explained.

    - If you race and genderbend, don't turn this into a amn vs woman thing or have one gender or race be extremely capable, while everyone else fails. Wonder Woman worked great in that regard. Both Steve and Diana are powerfull and usefull for the plot in there own way.

  5. I still think, that this project is going to fall through or is going to be really disappointing. I mean we are all imagining something with cosmere level worlds and magic. There is just no way, that they are able to foot the bill for this. I think they also do American Gods and there is basically no vfx in this thing, although I only saw a bits and pieces of it.

As for his writing schedule I do trust Brandon, that he knows what he is doing. Plus he has atleast 30 years left to write, at two books a year that is sixty books. Sixty books.

  6. I really like the Zamonia books by Walter Moers. In the original German version they are amazing and Buchhaim is the fictional place I want to visit the most. Does anyone know Mark T Barnes the Echoes of Empires trilogy. It lacks a bit in writing, but the world is amazing with all its fallen empires and cuthuluesk witches and warlocks. Or Genevieve Cogmans invisble library books are great and they are short. Something different from the Brandon Sanderson benchpress books.

  7. I just like to believe, that Mraize is just building up the Ghostbloods as an initiation to join Kelsier interplanetary cult. Think about it Kelsiers old crew operated with one primary member heading up a group of underlings, who never attended any meetings. Like Breeze and his soothers and rioters or Hamm and his thugs. So it would make sense, that Kelsier would apply the same template to his cosmere cult. Also Mraize still needs a babsk to go off-planet, which seems out of place given that he is a certified badass (probably). He could definitvly go off-world and not immediatly die. So maybe the supervision through Iaytil is to keep him from seeing to much.

    Putting aside the conflictual WoB.

That method (if works) would turn you into a quad Misting at best...well a quad Misting - quad Ferring. Not into a Mistborn

Actually you are right, I somehow got it in my head, that you could become a Mistborn this way. But you could still become a person with 8 powers, which are compoundable. I wonder, if it would work to have a bronze spike, which is charged with allomantic bronze, and break that in two pieces, so you can implant one and then burn the other half to get the ability to burn bronze. Then burn the other half of the spike in a second step. If it does you could become a mistborn and by consequence a fullborn that way.

  9. Actually it could be someone who is a misting, most likely a coinshot, who has knowledge of hemalurgy. The idea is that this person would hemalurgicly steal someone elses power with a steel spike and then burn that spike in order to become a mistborn. Burning a hemalurgic spike splices the two spiritwebs. So it would probably make you a misting or ferring of what ever power was stored in the spike, but also mentally unstable.

  10. On earth I would go with double zinc. Unlimited mental speed and influencing someones feelings is just to good to pass up. On Scadrial I would go with A-Electrum and F-Zinc. Basically see all your possible futures and then manveur yourself into the best position in whatever fight you are in.

  11. I think you could do Mistborn as very well as 2 hour something movies. Possibly mixing in Secret History with the third installment. So you can explain the shards to a general audience. I dont think the books have enough material for a mini series with 10 episodes and just 6 or 8 seem a bit short. Plus only a movie can pay for the cgi needed for scadrial era 1. And only movies make the kind of money, that would justify an investment as big as you would need for scadrial.

Stormlight should definitively be a mini series with ten episodes, but it will be too expensive to make. I mean think about it. You would need to create almost the entire scenery with cgi plus powers plus parsh and parshendi (you could do them with makeup though) and shardblades and shardplates and chasmfiends. I mean most parts of Roshars nature dont exist in this world.

And now remember: Game of Thrones is the rust right now. Easily ten times bigger than everything Brandon has written combined. Sounds harsh, but it is true. And even Game of Thrones cheaps out on Cgi. Season 7 had a lot of dragons, but no magic and not a single scenes of direwolfs. Making good cgi is insanely expensive.

So they will probably split each stormlight book in two movies. And that will just suck. Trust me I am german and in Germany stormlight gets released in two parts per original english book. I picked up SA not knowing that it was supposed to be one book and if I hadnt read mistborn before SA, well I had just dropped Brandon as an author. Actually it has gotten so bad, that all Brandon books are up in the air in Germany, because they dont sell.

  12. The radiant will win. He has a weapon, that is unstopable for the mistborn and the mistborn is missing a  lot of metals. Also Kholinar is filled with stormlight a day after a highstorm and there will be very little metals for the mistborn to burn, but plenty to push on. Stormlight just gives insane amounts of healing and increases strength and speed, while pewter only grants strength, dexterity and passive healing. Alsonn a lot of times in Mistborn Vin has to use pewter in order to not be harmed by duralumin pushes, so the single pewter vial will be gone fast.

A sleepless vs a kandra in Yeddaw at the advent of a highstorm. No weapons for both of them and the kandra is using a breakable, but not fraile true body.

  13. So while discussing the always interesting topic of why Kelsier kills Kaladin (warning: slight bias), I thought it would be fun to create a fightclub threat.

    Here are the rules:

    1.  You don't talk about the fightclub. B)
    2.  One person post a fight scenario like Kelsier vs Kaladin. You can specify with locations, powers, stormlight reserves and so on. If you don't assume it is a fair fight.
    3.  The next poster will give his opinion on, who would win in the fight. Then post another fight scenario.
    4.  No discussions.

    My scenario:

Allomantic electrum / feruchemical zinc twinborn vs allomantic tin / feruchemical chromium twinborn.

    Have fun.

  14. Great observations @Dreamstorm Could work and would be very interstng to see how Brandon would develop such a relationship. Also reading a long text with a lot of Kaladins and Kadolins in it gets confusing very fast. They sound way to similar.

Just make it a three-way relationship then.

Can we please have a three-way scene with them told from the perspective of Pattern, Syl and Maya. Like through comments and cheering them on.

  15. Another thing is if Nicrosil or Chromium could be made to work on a Radiant, if yes Kelsier will win, because it would happen in a close combat situation and Kaladin could not get away from Kelsier burning Atium.

    Questioner

If an Allomancer found themselves on Nalthis or Roshar, would they be able to use chromium on someone using Stormlight or Breath?

    Brandon Sanderson

I am staying away from answering too many questions like that until I start having it happen. But do know that the magics interact... some ways they interact very naturally, some ways, they don’t. One way I’ve released is, you could use bronze on most forms of Investiture to find it. So you can extrapolate that some of these things would work. But not necessarily all. All of them could be made to work.

  16. @Fourth Of The Night The 16 metals for Kelsier is debatable, but I think it is fair, because they dont give as much an advantage as Shardplate or Kaladin being able to control his second surge, which we know next to nothing about by the way. And a well timed duralumin-enhanced sothing rioting combination could seriously impact Kaladin. Like doing it right before stabbing him in the face after Kel manouvered in place with atium. It would also enhance the stab with pewter. Stormlight can heal a lot, but massive brain damage is where I draw the line.

@Blazenella I think they use glass daggers in Mistborn sometimes, sometimes they are obsidian daggers. We could also give him two alluminum-alloy daggers, so he can block Syl. ^_^ If Kelsier would use an innoncent as a human shield, which I could believe him doing, and Kaladin kills the person, it would seriously endanger his bond with Syl. And with Atium Kelsier could pull that off. Of course he wouldnt know about the ramifications for Kaladin, but remember Kelsiers commandment is: "Survive!" And that most definitivly extends to himself.

At the end the problem is, that Kaladins powers are still developing, while Kelsier has two very different, but finished powersets. Mistborn and Fullborn. Kelsier as a Mistborn is a discussion, but a Fullborn? Kelsier or Marsch or Raschek vs all current Knights Radiants, wouldnt be a fair fight or even a fight for the Knights Radiants. Nothing short of a shard can stop a fullborn, in my opinion.

Also there is a demand for Kelsier and Kaladin meeting. I mean Sazed could just send Marsch and Kelsier to help out on Roschar. I mean imagine the scenes. All the possible cool things. I want this in Stormlight 4.

Pre-death Kel and Current Kal (ie: No Shardplate) would be a hard fight, but I think Kal would be able to wear down Kel's Atium reserves. Syl can become a literally indestructible shield, so anything Kelsier shoots at Kal would be nullified by Sylshield. Kal has also literally pushed away a Highstorm with his Adhesion, so I think he could also deal with Coins that way.

Interesting thought: I think Jasnah could beat literally anyone, given Stormlight. Even if she couldn't Soulcast someone who was Invested, she could Soulcast the air around them into a block of Aluminum or Stone.

@Fourth Of The Night I think soulcasting a person is something like a battle of wills. So Jasnah, a very mind over matter woman, could easliy soulcast someone like the enraged Sadeas soldiers or the robbers in Karbranth. But someone like Kelsier or Marsch? Honestly I think those two would e one of the worst choices to try to soulcast in the entire cosmere.

No my two cents on Kelsier vs Kaladin. First of resurrected Kelsier will destroy Kaladin with zero effort. Fullborn or something close to it are just to powerful. Steel-compounding and gold-compounding and pewter-compounding, give you so much of an edge, that you wouldnt even need atium.

Lets set the stage for the fight.

Location: A neutral city with some metal and some stormlight, but not something like Kredikshaw or a highstorm.

Kaladin: A lot of stormlight, but nowhere near as much as in the battle of Thaylen City. Syl as a weapon, but no armour. Kaladins skill level will be the same as at the end of Oathbringer.

Kelsier: 3 vials with all 16 basic metals + Atium in the quantity he had fighting the Inquisitor Bendal. Lets say 15 minutes maximum, but more like ten. A purse of coins and two glass daggers.

Kaladin has superior healing, superior maneuverability and of course Syl, who can turn into anything from spears to shields. Kelsier has Atium and a wider variety of moves with all the different options metals give. Kel also is a total scumbag, while Kaladin would have to fight honourable. I dont think Kelsier would be above using a member of nobility as a human shield to protect himself from Kaladins attacks, which could endanger Kaladins Nahel bond. Also neither Kel nor Kal are stupid, so no wasting Stormlight or atium. Plus even if Atium runs out Kelsier could still use Electrum, which is the poor mans Atium.

Conclusion: I think Kelsier would win, but not easily, more like his fight against Bendal. He just has too many tricks up his sleeve with Nicrosil, Chromium, Duralumin and Zinc and Brass. I really think people underestimate, what rioting and soothing could do to someone with a fragile psyche like Kaladin. Isnt there a word of Brandon, that you could use bronze to sense other magic systems? If Kel can read when Kaladin is going to lash what, he has another advantage. Also it would make it impossible for Kaladin to hide from Kelsier, while he could easily attack the Radiant from the shadows. Also Kal will constantly glow like a lightbulb, which cant be usefull in a fight.

    TL;DR: Kelsier wins, but barely.
