The other man is described as bleeding into the carpet. This makes it a certainty that the man must have been killed by Lin and not Shallan. Her statement of having killed them can be interpreted in several ways. One is as @Calderis said is a metaphor. Another is that she is almost definitely suffering from a form of trauma which is filling in the blanks that her mind is in denial about. It is reasonable to assume that she does not want to believe that her father was capable of killing at that point her mind contrived these details which fit into her narrative better than what actually happened.

@Flash *Hugs* I know what your going through. I have experienced being talented and entering into competitions where I was certain that I would come out on top. I anticipated the best possible outcome only to be let down and utterly disappointed when I receive nothing in return for my efforts. Don't give up keep plugging along and using your talent and trying to reach your goal. The pain will pass and you will succeed.

I don't think that it means man vs shard . I believe that Odium would appoint a champion to fight on his behalf and that would be possible Odium would tie victory or defeat to one of his choosing.
