  1. Mistwraiths are a non-human species, and as such would probably never be natural metalborn. Therefore their only way to use metallic arts would be to be granted powers artificially. As they lacked knowledge of this medallion-tech, their only option was Blessings with allomantic or feruchemical powers instead of potency, stability, etc.

And nobody we know of other than Paalm knows how such a spike can be constructed for a kandra. But obviously it could be done, it's simply beyond their understanding of hemalurgy. Nicrosilminds and their interactions with Identity and Investiture are another field of the metallic arts that can potentially grant them power, and as seen with MeLaan can work, but they lack technical knowledge there as well.

Of course, possession of the Bands of Mourning has the potential to change that . . .

Might not be a matter of a special spike. Kandra might not just know their bind points and they probably don't want to screw around with them

  2. People should ask more questions pertaining to Marsh... it is relevant to my interest so to speak...

    Relevant WOBs:

    Marsh's activity during SoS:

Confimation that Iron Eyes is Marsh:

A good question to ask relating to Marsh's activities: has he been off Scadrial yet? Also, do we have any kind of confirmation that he is working directly for Harmony, like the kandra are?

  3. Pardon, I already knew those were out there, and were pretty basic and obvious haze killer technology. It was a poor attempt at humor on my part.

Though you know, when fighting an opponent who's stronger than you, "find a way to hit them even harder" feels like a really inelegant and inefficient answer to me. Not that I have an immediate alternative.

The problem isn't that a Thug is stronger than you. I mean yes, that's an issue. the issue is he's a tank. He can shrug off wounds that would knock down normal men, AND he's stronger than you. Vin actually shows us a lot that the problem with fighting against someone using pewter isn't the damage they can do, it's that it takes a hell of a lot of damage to actually put them out of the fight.

  4. I think that they will need to find some way to water it down. Given that thugs, coinshots, lurchers, soothers, and rioters are not using their metals most of the time, it would seem like it would be very easy to make yourself incredibly powerful by spending half your time storing.

Unless you can only store Allomancy while you are burning your metal. Which actually makes more sense considering how the grenade works.

  5. There was a WoB that he was by the southern scadrialians during shadows of self which is why he couldn't help with Bleeder. As to where he is at the time of Bands of Mourning, I haven't a clue.

I missed that WoB. That's interesting, that probably puts him down there around the same time the expedition left to retrieve the Bands of Mourning. Man someone really needed to mention Ironeyes during the interactions with Alik's people...

  6. So if you see two distinctly different men with the same name some time later on opposite sides of the continent, do you think they're the same person? Probably not. Take the name Herbert for example. Say I had never heard the name Herbert until the day my new coach driver introduced himself. Then later, I am bothered by a random beggar who bears no real physical resemblance to my old coach driver, but says his name is Herbert. My mind will most naturally attribute this to two different people with the same name due to context and subconscious logic, even if I wasn't familiar with the name to begin with.

Except we're talking about Wax. Who is suspicious of everything, all the time. It does seem odd that he wouldn't pick up on Hoid. Honestly... new coachman, and remarked on as new right before he talked to Harmony... maybe he just didn't register the name?

  7. Throwing open the doors to rampant speculation on where Marsh is. We know he is at least somewhat interested in the Set, but it's been at least a year since Marasi talked to him. So where is he? It seems like Wax's recent troubles would've been a lot easier with Marsh by his side than MeLaan or TenSoon

  8. In Secret History, Preservation calls the Spiritual Realm, or "What Happens Next" as "Beyond".

On several worlds, we've seen references to "The God Beyond."  It makes me wonder if there is a unifying "God" or force that is controlling or manipulating evens from the Spiritual Realm, where Shards and their derivatives can't really see.  It could even be the soul of Adonalsium, since presumably, he went Beyond after he died?

What do you guys think?  Coincidence or significance?

On a different note, I'm really surprised that Spook didn't decide to hang around like Kelsier after he died.

I'm putting in the Adonalsium column. It makes me wonder if the 17th Shard isn't more of a Adonalisum cult than a Hoid damage control team

  9. Since we know that Adonalsium could have been broken differently, I'm guessing that the reason many of the shard holders wanted him dead was manifested in the intent of the shards they took up.  The only one that seems odd so far is Ati, since it was said hew was a decent guy and was "corrupted" by Ruin..

Maybe Ati was talked into helping kill him?  Sort of a "Hey, come and help us do this because it needs to be done!" kind of thing.

The interesting question is why though, isn't it? What was Adonolasium doing that was so bad that the likes of Leras, Tanavast, and Ati were compelled to ally with Rayse to destroy him? Also... anyone else thinking that maybe the God Beyond is Adonlasium? I mean... if they killed him, his spiritual aspect had to go somewhere, right?

  10. I really like this idea, and would like to expand on it a bit.  So, we see Kelsier intentionally not tell Goradel that the latter's quest was successful, so as to prevent Ruin from catching on.  I wonder if Preservation was doing the same thing to Kelsier the entire time.  For example, the part where he shows Kelsier the future was almost unprompted, but necessary to have him go west to foil the Eyree/Ire's plot without Ruin realizing how vital it was.  Even the part where he shoves Kelsier into the prison is strange, especially given everyone's reactions afterwards.

I honestly think that Leras planned from the beginning to have Kelsier show up and eliminate these threats, knowing full well that everyone would ignore or dismiss the random Cognitive Shadow.  I don't think he foresaw everything (such as stabbing Elend), but he probably had a good idea.

Which is probably why he told Kelsier to survive in the Pits. He -needed- Kelsier to survive or else the whole plan would've gone pear shaped.

  11. What we need to remember about Iyatil is that while her people are probably the Hunters, she was raised on a different planet. Her mask is made of carapace rather than glass, so that too points to a life not lived on Scadrial.

Unless she made a new mask when she got to Roshar. Wood isn't as common there, but you can't swing a rock without hitting a bug/crab/lobster thing

  12. I agree that he would have had to gone south at some point during his rule but I do not think that rules out [pun intended] that he simply did just go south at some point. He could have left for only a year (or two) and then returned. He was the Lord Mistborn; I bet he could do, basically, whatever he wanted haha.

I certainly do not discount the possibility that it was someone else but I find it plausible seeing as we know that Spook was alive at this time, was interested in hemalurgy and had the resources to undertake such a journey.

... You think no historical record would have noted that the Lord Mistborn had a spike in his face instead of an eye? Unless you think he regrew it? I'm not sure you can do that with feruchemical healing, that might be more a Stormlight thing.

  13. I'll agree to disagree on this one. There's little enough evidence either way. VenDell (who may or may not have been being completely honest) says that the Lord Ruler made them. The SoScadrians believe that the person they call the Lord Ruler (the one who built the temple and helped them) made them. Their belief could be wrong, or VenDell could be lying. Not enough information to conclusively decide the point.

Weeeelll.... they believe he showed up with them, was my reading, and assumed because he showed up with them he made them. I'm not sure if that logic holds up now that we have a pretty good idea that Rashek and the southern Lord Ruler were more than likely different people.

  14. Brought over from the other thread where you mentioned this:

Interesting thought, but does the timing work out? We know that Spook ruled in Elendel for a pretty long time, either A) until he was 100 or B) after 100 years of rule. I got the impression that the Sovereign went to Southern Scadrial give or take 30 years after HoA. Spook's movements during that time seem pretty firmly in Northern Scadrial.

Edited because apparently B ) makes a smiley. Darn

  15. I am of the opinion that the One-Eye Spike Man (that name gets more awful every time I type it - sorry!) is actually Spook. IIRC, in HoA Spook's arms were scarred in a similar manner to Kelsier. Add to that the info we got from Steris in BoM about Spook living an unnaturally long time combined with the info that Spook was very interested in Hemalurgy leads me to believe that we did not see Kelsier in the flashback but rather that we saw Spook.

    See: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/52556-bands-spoiler-identity-of-the-one-eye-spike-man/

  16. Anyone else wondering how Hoid is here and on Roshar at the same time? From what I understand Stormlight and this series are taking place roughly in paralell... and we have Hoid's movements in Stormlight right now pretty well mapped out. Unless he's Elsecalling or something, he just isn't fast enough to cover all the ground he covers -and- take a jaunt to Scadrial

  17. Or the Lord Ruler spent a few centuries with a zinc mind that couldn't be emptied and all of a sudden lost the ability to think at superhuman speeds. It's odd that the Bands were his only metalmind though. He was wearing others, why were none of those metalminds? Why didn't he have a backup atium mind? For how careful and precise the Lord Ruler was, it seems like he got caught up way too much in his own hype... which doesn't really jive with his messages in the storage caverns. I wonder if Ruin influenced him somewhere along the line to get rid of backups...

  18. Iyatil's mask seems to be very similar to whet the Southern Scadrian's wrest for it to be coincidence, especially considering what we know about how Cosmere aware the ghost bloods are. I would venture to guess that the thing in the SoS broadsheet was Iyatil.

    What do you guys think?

More to the point, she's probably a Hunter. She -might- even be one of the survivors of the original expedition to the temple. If the Ghost Bloods helped her out of the execution that was planned for the survivors, it'd make sense that she comes back after establishing a new power base. the Bands are probably one of the most powerful items we've seen in the Cosmere... particularly on Roshar, where Investiture is all over the place.

  19. This follows with my we don't know a whole lot about Dalinar pre-Gavilar's death point. This Blackthorn is VERY different from the Dalinar we know, is definitely a brutal warlord, and I can totally see being best friends with Sadeas. Considering Sadeas being better in the past: I wonder if he actually was, but Dalinar's effectiveness skewed his wordlview?

  20. We don't know enough about Dalinar as he was BEFORE Gavilar's death to make a lot of judgements on his value system. How long before Gavilar's death did he stop cutting off the heads of people who disagreed with him? Or was it after? He railed against the Codes, so those weren't a part of his moral structure. Basically, how close was Dalinar to being Sadeas, or Aledar? We simply don't know. We know the man Dalinar is NOW is ashamed of the man he was then. So... that might give us some good hints as to what kind of man that was
