I wouldn't take Kasbal's quote as literal. They mention a few times that the Desolations happen before recorded history and the only complete work is the Way of Kings. A hundred Desolations just sounds better, religiously speaking. I'd also like to point out that 90% casualties are sure to send most societies back a bit. Bronze weapons and furs may be all that's left after 11 years of thAt kind of war. On topic, we assume that the Desolations are controlled from Odium's side. Perhaps the reason Taln is late is because they are started from Honor's side and Tanavast is dead. Maybe that is Odium's plan: allow Tanavast to start a Desolation, then kill him. This seems like it would be the best possible outcome for Odium

The way the first explorers of the Hallandren valley react to jungles indicates that there aren't any elsewhere on Nalthis. I'm on a phone so quoting is hard, but Hoid's story in chapter 32 seems to indicate that the jungle is just as unique as Shinovar.

Further thought: what if you turned a Shard's champion against it's Intent? What if Elend, for example, used his powers to Ruin while being empowered by Vin?
-
I think an important clue here is the state of Shadesmar on Sel. It's a mess, dangerous to travel in. I think Odium attacks the Cognitive aspect of Shards. After all, hatred does tend to destroy reason.

A syringe may not be strong enough to take a power without getting deformed. It could even snap off in the person. I wonder what would happen if you spiked someone with a spike made from their own sDNA

Except we have WoB that ripping a trait from someone's Spirit Web will leave them very dysfunctional. You might not kill someone, but you will definitely leave them worse for the wear.

The Recreance: More thoughts and a theory (***SPOILERS***)
Vortaan replied to The Count's topic in Stormlight Archive
There is a gap inbetween the two events. The Recreance is listed as happening after the Last Desolation, so even if it was only a few decades, it was enough time that people separated the two events when they were writing histories. Personally I think it was probably a few centuries. -
Vorin history states that men had to be given Shardblades and Plate because they were nowhere near advanced enough to fight Desolations on their own. I think the men in furs is just a sign of those less advanced times, since the prelude is a good 4 millennia before the rest of the book.

Why would the TLR ever try to be a tin savant when he can compound tinminds and get the same result with no drawbacks? Actually, he should be able to get an even better result since he can compound zinc and there's no upper limit on how good his senses could be if he tapped enough.

Firstly, we have a Marsh PoV that states that to charge a spike, there needs to be contact with blood. Since this is pretty much Ruin's knowledge, then I doubt there's a way to charge a spike that doesn't at the very least require injuring someone. Otherwise, I don't mind the idea of them splitting metals or what have you to access the same powers. I'd be curious how such a thing would be controlled, or what some of the internal metals would do. I'm also curious because I thought WoB was that they used Feruchemy differently too. Presumably they still have full Feruchemists, since there is (again assuming) no Lerasium to dilute the bloodlines.

Now that I'm thinking about it more, I'll wager it's more like being an Elantran than a koloss. However if you can sense Hemalurgy, you should be able to sense koloss, no?
-
If you consider that Breath animating an object that doesn't naturally move is very similar to burning a metal to create an effect that you wouldn't normally have, it works a bit better in my opinion
-
Why is there lower gravity on Roshar? And lower compared to where?
-
I've becoming more convinced that Bronze and Copper actually work with Investiture in general, not just the Metallic Arts. I would wager that a very skilled Seeker can probably detect large amounts of Breath, Stormlight, and probably Elantrans at all times. The interesting bit about that theory is that probably everything in the Cosmere either Pushes or Pulls, to a Seeker's senses. I haven't really thought through what that could mean yet, though.
-
Maybe Ryshadium are the beginnings of horses adapting to Roshar. They are stronger and faster, do they perhaps survive hightstorms better?
-
Forgot that one. I'll file that under Cognitive probably, but I stay firm on the other two.
-
Maybe it's because I am a Thomas Covenant fan, but the Rhyshadium have never struck me as all that special. Roshar version of Ranyhyn and I'm good. Maybe there is something more there, though. Why do they choose their riders? Adolin and Dalinar make sense, but why not Elkohar? Did Gavilar have one?
-
I wonder if choosing a champion is part of how Odium Splinters a Shard? If for example Devotion and Dominion chose sides, not necessarily against each other, but supported Dereth and Korath with some of their power to make their points... How so? Lightsong provides a lot of proof that their Cognitive aspects aren't much changed from when they were normal people. A lot of the Heightenings seem to mimic traditionally divine abilities. Seeing the future is almost definitely Spiritual in nature, to my mind. Perfect pitch and color sense could very well just becoming attuned to the world, or to Endowment in particular. Most important to me though is their ability to heal, which I feel depends a lot upon Spiritual instead of Cognitive aspects in the specific manner they do it. It's worth noting that the main difference between a Returned and someone of the Fifth Heightening is both the precogntive dreams and the ability to heal someone. Both seem primarly Spiritual to me.

Nightblood is also compared to Shardblades, which are highly Invested objects

This seems to hold water. Nightblood and kandra are the examples we see of Investiture creating sentience, and both have a Physical presence. Do we have WoB on whether you can use Hemalurgy to provide sentience to something that currently doesn't have the capacity? An example would be an animal, or perhaps for extra fun a greatshell.

They are actually a better guide to how Splinters act, I think. Divine Breaths seem primarily Spiritual, with maybe just enough Cognitive to allow visions of the future. Unfortunately because there are no other Shards around Endowment, we can't see how they would mingle with other powers. Also according to this theory, shouldn't the Skaze and Seons start to merge after some time?
-
I'd wager that Honor died around either the Recreance or the Hieorcracy. Just a gut feeling. Actually, here's an interesting question that would probably answer it. When did the periods of constant warfare start in Roshar? I'll bet that coincides nicely with the death of Tanavast, and I'll also bet that it coincides nicely with the Sunmaker.
-
Splinters also have personalities. Until we know exactly what the Seons and Skaze are, it's hard to use them as examples of what Shards are like without a Shardholder.
-
I don't know that I agree, though I like the thought put into it. My impression has been that Ruin and Preservation are combining not because the Shards themselves are intermingling their Identity, but because Sazed is. Shards in and of themselves do not have a Cognitive presence, it seems to me. I always look at how the mists reacted without Leras to guide them for an example. I suppose the tripping point for me is that if there is no mind controlling Dominion and Devotion, what would be the Cognitive factor pushing them together? The collected belief of the people of Sel? I don't necessarily believe that Shards will mingle without some kind of mind perceiving them them as a whole.
