Theory:Szeth had a Spren, who is now trapped in his shardblade
Vortaan replied to Macen's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's an interesting theory, but we have WoB that how Szeth is Surgebinding is something different from how Kaladin is doing it. Doesn't invalidate the theory, but makes it seem likely that the Shardblade and Surgebinding are related in a different fashion.- 10 replies

Would they have any concept of Feruchemy though? Maybe that's the part that Miles is actually focusing on, since that's the ability that makes him and arguably Wax so powerful.

Hm. The problem I have with this is that Allomancy is probably weaker in the Southern population, unless they discovered lerasium as well. We have a quote from a HoA epigraph that Allomancy is a very different thing without that extra lerasium boost. How effective could Southern mistings be, I wonder? What is the lowest possible range of Allomantic power?

I got the impression that Kwaan had a lot to do with Rashek taking the power and not releasing it. He did expressly put Rashek with Alendi to prevent that exact situation, so I would think that a quick: "Hey, by the by, if you DO need to kill Alendi, don't release the power cause thar be evil in that thar well" would have been warranted.

Probably around the same variation you get from people on Earth. Shin lack the epicanthic fold, which most people on Roshar have. Actually Scadrial seems the most homogenous of what we've seen so far... which makes me wonder if the people at the South Pole aren't more racially diverse.

Being killed with an Honorblade binds you to it
Vortaan replied to Swimmingly's topic in Stormlight Archive
Um... except we have an example of how you transfer ownership of a Shardblade, ala Dalinar. Honorblades could be different, but considering that the Heralds die in most Desolations and still have their Blades, I'm guessing not so much. I think it's not a great assumption to think that normal people aren't also following Odium during Desolations. Probably not a large number, but probably some trying to save their own lives. EDIT: Also, I'm guessing the populace at large don't know about the Heralds being tortured inbetween Desolations, since there's no reference to it outside of the prologue. That seems weird considering that the Heralds are central to Vorin theology. -
You're right, the lighteyes really do hate Bridge Four. Don't you think they might reward a bridgeman who gives them a solid reason to have the whole crew executed and still uphold Sadeas "honor"? Brightlady: We left you out for the Stormfather to judge, and you have squandered that chance by stealing from your Highprince. The penalty for such a thing is death. Your men will join you...except Dunny, because he gave us the heads up. Good job, kid, off to Bridge Twenty two with you.

Except that the laser is moving at the speed of light, which apparently doesn't shift at all going into a bubble. Makes the whole throwing up a bubble to have time to dodge thing not work all that well. Admittedly Wayne's trick of seeing where people are aiming and moving to where they aren't would still work, but a halfway decent crossfire should take care of that. Come on lasers in the third trilogy!
-
Well then, you just need high powered lasers to kill Sliders, huh? Or a tesla coil.
-
I'm going to preface this with admitting that I am not the best physics guy in the world. However, I know some of you are, so maybe you can help me with this. I was thinking today about Slider bubbles. They slow down time inside the bubble, and do funny things to ballistics and sound going into or out of the bubble. So why don't they seem to affect light going into the bubble? I mean, light should be scattering oddly upon hitting the border, just like sound and solid objects do. Another factor is that the light outside the bubble is moving slower than the light inside the bubble, relatively speaking, and it seems to me that some wierd visual effects should be taking place, no?

I don't know Darnam. Ruin as another mist spirit just really falls flat for me, mainly because of all the other times it would have been useful for him to physically interact with something that he doesn't. He has full consciousness, unlike Leras, and never sacrificed any power... so why doesn't he spike a member of the crew himself, rather than go through Inquisitors? Or maybe menace Elend a bit so that he never trusts anything Leras tries to tell him? Heck, I'd even consider killing Sazed if I were him and able to, since he's probably the last living Feruchemist AND the one who figured out that Ruin was changing the prophecies.
-
Not buying this. The Well was located nowhere near the Pits, and Ruin was trapped. If he could access his Physical aspect even while trapped, his power would likely have been enough to overwhelm Preservation's trap. Another point for consideration is that no one else sees the mist spirit Alendi sees. Considering he's in the middle of a large expedition, it seems unreasonable that he's not surrounded by others during the day. Is it possible he only ever saw the mist spirit at night? Far from civilization, without reflecting lights, could that make it appear black?

Wait, so we're assuming that before their move they weren't using Surgebinding or fabrials? If so, I can agree with that. You move to another world and suddenly the magic you were using doesn't work anymore, and you don't know the rules of the new one. Otherwise, Soulcasting should be able to solve a -lot- of the problems you name. Although how specific you can get with the metallurgical qualities of what you Soulcast could be a limitation.

Killing Miles and killing Wayne are two different prospects. The one is insanely difficult, the other would be a lot easier with an incendiary or toxic round. Personally I like incendiary more because it's got more uses, but that's just me. For example, though, an incendiary round or napalm might be the key against sliders.
-
Actually, considering the average life span of a species on our planet is 10 million years, humanity is more likely to be extinct when the sun becomes a red giant. Presuming we don't go extinct though, it'd be terribly disappointing if we never made it out of the solar system in a couple billion years.
-
I would think incendiary rounds might be good against bloodmakers. Maybe good against Pewterarms too, huh?

We have no WoB on any Shardworlds being destroyed, just the Shards themselves. Which is kind of interesting, actually. If Odium can shatter Shards, why does he leave the Shardworlds around? Would destroying them recoalesce the Shards he destroyed?
-
Hm. I kind of like the idea of a Rosharan (Roshari?) empire that got destroyed via red giants. It's curious though that they'd lose so much technology almost immediately after, unless you're proposing a less-rapid destruction of society, followed by a rebuilding period ala Heralds and the Silver Kingdoms.
-
It actually raises the question of how mankind survived Desolations prior to the Radiants. It also kind of indicates that Shards weren't really widely used or available, since there is mention of Surgebinders but no mention of Shardbearers. One would think that Shardbearers would be just as dangerous in the apparent war before Nohadon's Desolation as Surgebinders, no?

Ok, wasn't sure. Thank you.

Speculation on the Nature of Metallic Arts
Vortaan replied to Araris Valerian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Pretty sure we have WoB that spikes are Invested and are harder to Push on than non-charged metals. I seem to recall the comment in relation to Nightblood, but don't really feel like looking around for the quote at the moment. -
Still seems odd that we never see painspren around Szeth, when we do see them during battles. I actually don't recall Szeth ever mentioning seeing spren though, now that I think of it. I might be wrong on that, but if anyone feels like checking... can Szeth even see spren? And if not, what the heck would that indicate?
-
Wait. If this is a thing, how did all the Keepers die? I mean... you wouldn't need a ton of Keepers to take a lot of Feruchemical traits, you could just get one and steal everything but health, give him a goldmind, then lather rinse repeat.
-
Also, look at what Spook accomplished. If he hadn't pulled out the spike, the whole city would have probably burned down... not too bad for the least important member of the crew.
-
Actually... this doesn't seem terribly far off. Shouldn't he attract angerspren, hatredspren... some kind of spren? The guy's tearing himself apart on the inside with strong emotion, SOMETHING should be attracted to that.
