You're right of course, but how many of those characters are confirmed straight? I would argue a lot of them are bisexual or fully gay (adolin, renarin, Eshonai, Teft, SHALLAN, JASNAH, etc)

Oh no you don't come off as rude at all! And I do understand where you're coming from, however I don't think comparing it to Kaladins depression is really fair, because Kaladins depression does have a bigger purpose in the plot but his sexuality doesn't. I doubt he will even have an on screen relationship. I do agree with you though, it is nice to be accurately represented. And I believe if we let Sanderson have some time he will do it well. I am hoping for something in the next or fifth stormlight archive.

Best Cosmere Character Tournament!
discorat replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Could be! I just found Shai more relatable and more real than i did Sarene. -
Why would we need more gay protagonists when we have Elend, Kelsier, Raoden and Renarin? The cosmere is filled with gay men. case closed Edit: okay i realise this could be taken very sarcastically, but as someone who has read books, and fantasy, their entire life, Cosmere being ''straight'' isn't as bad as, for example, heavily sexual books being so. This because the cosmere isn't sexual, and very rarely even romantic at that. I rarely think about it, as someone that often looks for representation in media, because thats not what Brandon Sanderson chooses to focus on. It would be like looking for how to cook a hamburger in a book about cupcakes (to me). The representation he has given, is good imo, and I know Brandon Sanderson has mentioned before he has stuggled writing women before too (Because hes not a woman) but has after years of writing them gotten better, and this slow buildup of gay characters is just the start of something I think will be a good book with maybe even a gay lead.

How Would One Fail the Third Oath
discorat replied to BasementDwellingRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yeah, as Syl said, its what changes in Kaladin when he doesn't protect Elhokar, not the fact that he doesn't do something about it...so I think its more about how the action (or non-action) changes the person rather than the action itself. -

Guess That Cosmere Character! Forum Edition!

Kaladin, on the inside. -

First time i read the way of kings, i was only interested in kaladin (tbh it was the first time i had ever read anything that huge, which is probably why i did what i did) and i ende up skipping everyone elses parts to read kaladins. I then had to go back and read dalinars parts too because kaladin eventually ended up with him, and thats how i starte reading shallans too and actually started reading for sandersons amazing writing and plot and not just for kaladin. Even though i love kaladin with everything i have

Brandon sandersons source of inspiration
discorat replied to discorat's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Thank you! I’ll check that tag out! -
Hey!! So I know that B. Sanderson takes inspiration from many places, cultures and religions. But Is there anywhere I could see exactly where hes taken inspiration? obviously he has gotten some inspo from his own faith (mormon). And the emperors soul was written after he was in tawian: Has he taken inspiration from any country in africa/middle east? I really love incorporating different cultures/religions and i think is pretty cool that he has done so in a totally non offensive but also subtle way. This is because a lot of authors i have read often make sure to point out that This Character Is Different Look At Them And Look How Diverse And Educated I Am! With one side character.
-
Exactly, mature romance>>>everything else. Which is why i prefer Shallan/Kaladin. And yes, Sanderson is great with romance in that it never overshadows the main plot (which is why everyone reads his books in the first place, anyways).
-
Honestly, i didn't really like the reckoners couple. They were to teenage-y for me. Steris+Wax were The couple that learned to become friends first, before they became romantically involved. Ideal relationship.
-
True, but all those seem like..exceptions. Kelsier died early on- and when he did, I felt like Vin was more of the main. Lightson died in the very end, like Vin+Elend. Adolin feels like a proper main, or that could just be because we got so much material of him bc stormlight is so big. I wouldn't want Adolin to die either; but him dying on the 'wrong' side would be exciting, imo. It would add drama and angs which i love. Even though i love Adolin. But I _never_ imagined Dalinar to be odiums champion, but everyone could see Adolin becoming his champion- if Dalinar was so close to becoming odiums champion, why not Adolin?
-
You're right, he already took the Dalinar/Navani path, but then hes also taken the Adolin/Shallan path before too in other books. What would make Dalinar kill His wife? A force that controls him of course It's just blabbery theories from me, but The Shallan/Adolin pairing makes me insane with theories on how they could be broken apart. It's just too bland for Sanderson, imo. I don't think he wrote the most romantic scenes hes ever written just to throw it away in a 'just an exotic attraction' and 'she reminds me of my brother' thing
-
Oh no, I love Adolin, I couldn't deal with him dying aggghhhh this is frustrating! On one hand, Adolin+Shallan is not a pairing I would say Brandon would be satisfied with, on another he doesn't like character deaths, especially mains. But Adolin as a character is frustrating too- what is he? Hes the stronger Kholin son- but Renarin is becoming much stronger too, now. He's a true warrior, hes a shadow of his father. Does he have a true place, like the others? He gives me (mistborn era 1 spoilers)
-
Well,, Dalinar/Navani happened, imo thats the most 'scandalous' pairing hes had so far
-
ugh, exactly? I just dont understand . I've always felt ''woah these two really understand eachother on a level other than just superficial romance'' for all of sandersons pairings, so why don't i feel like it for Shallan/Adolin? why do i feel like Shallan and Adolin are superficial? I just don't get it. Plus, the only thing Shallan feeling for Kaladin - the dark, moody slave is some 'exotic rebellious rich lighteyed' feelings, just doesn't feel right to me. I'd love for them to actually be together, it would be so healthy. Plus, Shallan reminding Kaladin of his little brother isn't something necessarily bad for their romantic relationship. Romance isn't just about attraction & all that superficial stuff. Shallan reminding him of Tien was super cute
-
Kaladin was only ever happy and smiley with Shallan honestly :/ When his bridge was safe, he was safe, and calm but it don't remember him being truly, freely happy- Thats why i wanted him together with Shallan :/ I honestly thought they'd end up together, because i've been able to know whos gonna end up with who since its been the best choice...i don't know if this was the best choice though. It didn't feel like the best choice, it felt like the cleanest choice. Like Shallan and Adolin ending up happy ever after and Kaladin sad and lonely on the side. Black and White. What was always supposed to happen, anyways, right? It wasn't like: (mistborn era 1 & era 2 spoilers)
