When Shallan kills Tyn her eyes burn. I'll see if I can find something on the Ruin thing but I have my doubts there is one.

Interesting. I doubt the ones I'll guess because they don't appear as significant characters yet, but I guess Eshonai wasn't before sure was. My first guess is Restares or Amaram, and the spoiler is that it shows the Sons of Honor are a major influence. As they should be with a crazy Herald in their possession. My second guess is Mraize or Iyatil, for the same reasons but with the Ghostbloods. And I have maybe an interesting guess associated with that - Shallan. That would be a spoiler because it says she leaves the other characters to be with the Ghostbloods. In favor of this is that both characters so far are flashback characters in other books to come. And if it is to be that pattern, Kaladin wouldn't be much of a spoiler (we already know he's away and what would it spoil), which only leaves Shallan. So yeah, my bet is on Shallan if it's a flashback character again, or Amaram/Restares if not.

I like the thinking, and you can't rule out some significance with Kelsier, but the WoB (which IS paraphrased) indicates that any theorizing may be looking too far into it? That's not to say you shouldn't theorize I like raising the idea of linking Marsh's connection to Kelsier as a possible anchor

I just want a Pattern emoji. @Haelbarde I summon thee to emojify things. Particularly an animated Pattern emoji. You can program an emoji to run the maths for the Julia Set right? (where's the thinking-Joe emoji when I need it).

Aluminum seems to have different effects with different magic systems but I don't think it's been spelt out. It can probably cleanse someone of unwanted investiture as well and can probably drain investiture in most systems, or at least be inert. Atium can't see what it will do I think based on them, and "there's a difference between being inert and blocking Investiture, and actually sucking out Investiture", aluminium is just inert. It clashes a little with the 'cleanse you of unwanted investiture' line, but hey. I personally think that aluminium only will block kinetic investiture.

The bit that intrigues me is "The world became ours, and we lost it. Nothing, it appears, is more challenging to the souls of men than victory itself." the Aimians write it, but they are not human. So why mention 'ours' and 'men'? I feel it's an Aimian writing to a human ally for this reason. Of course they could just call themselves men like Brandon calls non-human sapient races 'people'.

I'm not sure if I'm irritating or useful doing this... I think those spren relate to Bondsmiths. You've got the whole thing with Ishar 'solving' the Voidbringers with something unique to their abilities, with the issues around how Parshmen were created, etc. I feel like that spren is a bond-spren, and that it's around her because it's supposed to let a Listener bond with other spren, but it's been supplanted by a voidspren. Speculative but it's what comes to mind.

Ah legit.

Are you thinking of worldsinger? Sigzil's apprenticeship? Or you do mean the Terris? Oh, and #thesestupidranks #godilovethesestupidranks

I can answer the Nalthis one. They are not drab and do not have Breath. Breath is Nalthian but a Nalthian without Breath is missing something non-Nalthians have. Ie Nalthian with Breath > non-Nalthian > Drab

So how did people figure out that Zahel was Vasher?
Extesian replied to Necessary Eagle's topic in Stormlight Archive
Here’s a collection of quotes from Words of Radiance, mostly involving colors, the flower reference is interesting. Otherwise just what has been said, the voice he hasn’t heard for years, the clear evidence of lifesense, the ability to see spren. “I’m old son, repeating myself makes me eat the wrong flower” “Someone was near. Zahel awoke, snapping his eyes open, knowing instantly that someone was approaching the room…One of those storms had come, Invested to the hilt…Kaladin. The Bridgeman turned bodyguard. The one with that spren Zahel could sense always spinning about…He expected a voice to speak in his mind as he drifted off. Of course there wasn’t one. Hadn’t been one in years”. “Zahel had drawn a circile in the sand and was throwing little colored rocks into it’ “Boy, you’ve got red on your ears like I’ve never seen” “Don’t be green from the ground” -
So they can't be magically affected by even the most powerful magic user I guess? Or just because it's soooo gangsta to use the world's most expensive metal as your skeleton. So bling.

Application of Fabrial-Tech in a more modern era.
Extesian replied to Calderis's topic in Stormlight Archive
For me, Division is pretty unsubtle and perfectly destructive. If you’re cutting molecular bonds you’re reducing water to hydrogen and oxygen, you’re reducing rock to (I dunno, silicon, oxygen, carbon, whatever else), you’re reducing a human being to carbon, hydrogen, oxygen etc. In other words, anything you use the power on is no longer that thing, it breaks down into its component atoms. I imagine the problem with it is the amount of investiture required. Edit – and yeah, The One Who Smashes It is smashing it today. I think I’ve used up half my upvotes in half an hour of reading The One Who Reaps My Upvotes’ posts. -
To add to @The One Who Connects answer on history of the magic, AU has the same implication, that there wa landscape based magic pre- splintering but that the Dor and it's regionalized magic systems only started after the power was confined to the cognitive realm

If you were Brandon, what would you change?

You may find these WoBs interesting for Brandon's own thoughts on revision and death -
Its bedtime so I'll think on this but

This, from three Ad Astra signing (I can't remember who asked and posted this, my apologies to them), gets you closer!

I love this post. There is a simple reason I don't think chasmfiends are intelligent. Khriss, the most knowledgeable person in the Cosmere, says this in Arcaanum Unbounded She or Nazh would've studied chasmfiends. She mentions them. Yet it's just the Ryshadium (? no time to look up spelling) as the species that is approaching sapience. I feel like she would know, and say, if they were. I also suspect the type of spren that could grant intelligence wouldn't be a physical force spren. My favorite bit of your post is the side-note. I think that's right, chasmfiends grow a giant stone to hold stormlight to feed to the spren during weepings, so they don't collapse. All in all, great post, I think you'll be a great presence on this site

Homeworld of the Ones Above
Extesian replied to Paracosmic_nomenclator's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes indeed, but it’s a matter of timing. Faster than light travel will be invented, apparently with Scadrian magic, somewhere between the events of Wax and Wayne, and the events of Sixth of the Dusk. Given the Scadrians will have access to medallions by then (enabling non-Scadrians to use allomancy) the people who actually invent and use FTL spaceships need not be Scadrians. I may be completely wrong of course, but I see no reason why Silverlighters or the Seventeenth Shard wouldn’t use FTL technology once they have it. Sure, perpendicularities are probably faster but than First of the Sun is (according to AU) very dangerous to visit that way. So yeah, I think any organisations like that will mostly use perpendicularities anyway, but if they want to visit First of the Sun, they need a spaceship. That applies to anyone of course, which is why my idea is speculative. -
Good summary. I’ve always believed the first ideal is purely an ideal, while the others are actually oaths. And that there is no consequence to ‘breaking’ the first ideal, because it’s aspirational rather than binding. I’ve also always been baffled that people talk about Honor as though that’s synonymous with good. All Honor means is that you have a belief system that regulates your behaviour and you stick to it (e.g. you don’t have to make any promises, but if you do, you’d better stormin’ keep them). I’ve had a going-nowhere-battle when people have talked about whether a person is ‘right’ to be a Radiant, to convince them that there is no right person to be a Radiant, only a right person to belong to a particular order. So hopefully this nice little summary will kick off some good comments J

Do you know how we know that Spool? I wasn't aware of that and find it very interesting. Did I miss an implication in TES?

If Odium had killed Ati and Leras

My understanding is they've decided but haven't told us. I think someone did palaneum is a problem coz of some other site? I still hope they choose my Words of Founding idea but they probably have something far cooler -
@Ravi there are those who can pull secrets from your soul. I have them on retainer.

Homeworld of the Ones Above
Extesian replied to Paracosmic_nomenclator's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah I suspect, given the hints at diverse origins, they're from Silverlight, which with the advent of FTL starts to takes a more expeditionary attitude to the Cosmere, with mostly a Prime Directive attitude but with some looseness, poor differing factions. It could be the Seventeenth Shard but it's pretty interventiony for those guys. But I think it may be an interplanetary alliance rather than just one planet. -
The phantoms were bones encased by stone but with gaps, the investiture acted as muscles and ligaments to move the bones and make the phantoms mobile. Rigidity does matter, Vasher just found a way to make stone flexible:)
