[Edgedancer/newsletter spoilers] An almost divine skill
Doc12 replied to summersnow's topic in Stormlight Archive
Good reasoning. A lift/hauka team up would be fun to read. Alternately it could be something like lift running around stealing food while hauka chases her. Anyway, I agree that hauka is a good skybreaker candidate. Have an upvote! -
since we're talking about Lift in the newsletter here, anyone notice this potential power? When we see things, light hits bjects and reflects off them to our eyes. What I saw here was sunlight not hitting her. This means, potentially, EdgeDancers could make themselves invisible by rendering themselves unable to be hit by light! Feel free to correct my science or agree. Just a theory

How about the Storm father? "You're all going to die. I'm sorry" And whar would wyndle say?
-
There's a theory i read that the radiant oaths are divided into the two attributes of the herald. Thus kal's next two oaths are about leading, seeing as his second and third ideals are about protecting. Thinking of that, and seeing as Paliah's attributes are learned and giving, perhaps the ideal is something about sharing knowledge. Second and third oaths about learning, and fourth and fifth about sharing, maybe?

Rephrasing Erklit's original post, the theorized ideal was I will attempt a worthy task even if it seems impossible or will likely lead to my death. when you face an impossible task, something fearful, and yet do it anyway, isn't that courage? Isn't the only time a man can be brave is when he's uncertain or scared? Note that I'm not saying this is the Truthwatcher ideal, what I was doing was rephrasing the intent of the OP. Perhaps it us true that courage would more likely be the Dustbringer ideal, (good catch on that) Still, it's a pretty good theory.

Seems a bit wordy, and not a little fatalistic. I would suggest something along the same lines such as "I will face the future with courage, so long as it is right" Anyway I think your theory holds water, and you gave a really clear analysis of Renarin's bonding week that I kinda missed in the book, so it was helpful! I suspect you nailed the when and where of Renarin's second oath. Hope Brandon clarifies this in book 3 haha. Have an upvote!

i can't write songs, but I have tried my hand at a stormlight ketek poem some time ago. This is me trying to encapsulate the scene at the Honor Chasm as Kaladin turns into a vengeful spirit determined to live and protect once more. Storms brewing, despair crushing him, broken man, saving bridges Darkness kills Light, spirit vengeful Man watching death. Poison crushes Honor Honor offering leaves of death offering honor Honor crushes Poison. Death watching man, vengeful spirit Light killing darkness. Bridges saving man broken, Him crushing despair, brewing storms The middle portion is meant to be a pun on how "Honor" which refers to Syl as an honorspren, offering Kaladin the Blackbane, which is a twisted sort of 'honor' as in 'Honor chasm'. So yeah XD

Shows I'm doing a decent job at least XD Thanks! WoR has seriously a lot of plot threads. was tricky trying to choose the ones most likely to be chosen for a movie. I think if a movie is ever made, Young shallan and young kal's flashbacks would be the first to go

Words of Radiance Trailer. Soundtrack I had in mind: None shall live by Two steps from hell *Epic Drum intro (Stormlight against a black screen (Thanks @thegatorgirl00) ) THE EVERSTORM IS COMING “Thirty-eight days,”a hand scratches on the ground with chalk. “The end of all nations.” Long shot, zooming on the Parshendi city. “Our people are crumbling.” Venli speaks to Eshonai as they move through the city. Long shot, panning over Parshendi culture and their various forms. Eshonai speaks “We sent the Assassin. We chose this war,” Venli smiles darkly, holding up a gem with the lightning red spren inside “And now it is time to end it.” Linger on Eshonai's apprehensive face. Cut to a highstorm, as the gem is crushed in the Storm, the red lightning infusing Eshonai. She screams. DARK PLOTS ARE HATCHING Aboard the Winds Pleasure, Shallan wakes to see men stabbing Jasnah, chasing her. She screams in a dark room in a tavern, Kaladin seats with Moash and a team of 'patriots'. “What do you do if the hand is festering, threatening the entire body?" “you'res speaking of killing the King.” Adolin enters an arena to face four shardbearers. He is rapidly hit in sucession, each hit resulting in a flash of the screen, cutting to a black screen. AND THE ASSASSIN IS BACK A figure of white silhouetted against black, rain crashing against him. Cut to Adolin and Dalinar's horrified faces. "I am Szeth Son-Son-Vallano. I do as my Masters demand, and I do not ask questions!" A shot of his Blade clashing against Dalinar's. (Pause) (Chorus kicks in) THE KNIGHTS RADIANT MUST STAND AGAIN Kaladin runs across a chasm, whooping as he soars into the sky Shallan draws on paper frantically, tracing Pattern into paper, bringing him to life Dalinar shouts a rousing battle cry to the armies as they march against a darkening sky A girl slides into darkness, pursued by coiling vines The hand continues to write the chalk countdown (Quiet portion of the music) BUT THEY WILL BE SHAKEN Pattern buzzes sadly as Shallan shuts her eyes, turning away from him “I hate you,” Shallan whispers. “You will kill me one day,” Pattern agrees. Syl drifts aimlessly, looking lost, as Kaladin festers in prison, crying curses against Elhokar. "This is wrong, Kaladin." "I don't care." (Chorus comes back in) THE EVERSTORM COMES. The hand now writes “Zero zero zero zero” The Parshendi arrayed in stormform, eyes glowing and lightning flashing, chanting as the camera pans over Dalinar’s army. The sky breaks. Lightning flashes. Dalinar kneels beneath a fracturing sky, holding his son. Adolin kneeling before the corpse of his horse, disbelieving. Lightning flashing, people screaming. Parshendi singing. A flash of light, Szeth crashes before Dalinar, mad, implacable, Shardblade summoned. Dalinar shouting at Shallan to find a way to get them out of there Dalinar summoning his blade just in time to meet Szeths Adolin watching, horrified, as Szeth Lashes Dalinar into the sky. (Most triumphant part of the music) LIFE BEFORE DEATH Kaladin, bloodied, bruised, broken, warding an unseen figure from two more figures in the shadows. “You. Will not. Have him.” STRENGTH BEFORE WEAKNESS Dalinar clashes Blades with Szeth. JOURNEY BEFORE DESTINATION "Something is wrong with your Shardblades. All except...for mine." A glowing Shardblade appears in Shallan’s hands, as she plunges it into the Oathgate THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE: WORDS OF RADIANCE “Honor is dead,” a whisper against black, “But I’ll see what I can do.”

Hey Sam, its from the newsletter Brandon sent us, which included an excerpt from Edgedancer. On that note, @Stormgate, shouldnt you mention that this a newsletter exclusive post in the title? Not everyone here subscribes to the newsletter I mean, you did tag it, but make it a bit more explicit, perhaps.

Hello hello, the Doctor's arrived in the cosmere! Anyway, hi, I've been lurking around the stormlight and mistborn forums for a few weeks now, starting a discussion or two, but now I suppose I'd come in properly and introduce myself. I'm a Sanderson fan...as you probably could tell. I've read every book Sanderson has written thus far, with my favorite series being the Stormlight series, with Mistborn era 1 a close second. Non cosmere favorites are Rithmatist and the Alcatraz series. Random other things I like are Doctor Who, as again, you probably could tell (Maybe I should set my title to Captain Obvious), and My little pony. heh. Oh and I'm from Malaysia. Hi! While not a theorist myself, I do love reading all those crazy theories we fans come up with. I tend to ask random, perhaps meta discussions such as Vin vs Iron Man, or trying to create trailers or posters for the Stormlight Archive (Possibly Mistborn as well). I also love writing fanfiction, although I haven't dabbled in cosmere fanfiction yet - but its a matter of time! BTW I am accepting prompts for writing if anyone has them. Also, I'm friendly (most of the time) and quite open to meeting new friends to discuss cosmere with! I love this place already, and I think I'll be very happy here.

Anyone wanna do a words of radiance one?
-
@Botanica Question about Oathbringer, 渡誓. correct me if I'm wrong, (probably am), but wouldn't it be 渡誓者 to show 'he/it that brings the oaths', or 'oathbringer' rather than just 'oath bring?' my Chinese isn't very good even at best of times, so pardon of its a stupid question
-
@Botanica So you're the one who does translation for the entire book? Storms, that's amazing. I do a bit of freelance translation work and I know it takes a lot even for short documents. I cannot imagine the work it takes for a monster work like Words of Radiance! Thanks for the highly detailed explanations and examples! BTW, bit of squeeing here, but I've come across your art before and it is gorgeous. Thank you!

@Sam Script Eeyup. What gave it away? Can you just list some of the main character names in the Taiwan version?
-
It would be really interesting to know how the names of the main characters are translated in Chinese heh. What's the term for Stormlight? The term for spren?
-
@Sam Script Yeah I know it's dian4, it just sounded close enough haha. Im actually Asian too, so i actually do speak Chinese, read and write it in as well, though I prefer English. And that's really cool. So for place names like urithiru or alethkar, you use the direct sounds, but for names with meaning like shadesmar or terms like investiture, you try to get the meaning?
-
Oh cool! I'm curious as to how you guys translated e names into Chinese. Do you guys use transliteration? Or some kind of other method. Sanderson has a lot of terms he coined that probably would be a little weird in other languages.
-
You got me there heh. I got lazy because my phone doesn't have a chinese keyboard
