  1. I've really done a lot of damage to your ability to trust information roles haven't I You were also fooled by Mippo for two cycles I'd call it even I'm glad everyone had fun! @StrikerEZ It was a blast co-GMing. The first couple hours after the game started and we were pushing multiple hotfixes was a very interesting time Thanks for letting me help out! Balance-wise, I think the game worked out pretty okay! I was a bit hesitant about the village only having one sensor, interceptor, and illusioner, especially as the sensor and illusioner were killed pretty quickly. But the interceptor lived to the end and managed to catch two elims - congratulations, Coco Also wow, the elims did manage to hit every single hyperjumper Striker gave the village! Still an extremely close game with not 1, not 2, but 3 coinflips! With Mippo in two of them! Have some game awards! The award of Most Mindbladed Player goes to @DrakeMarshall, who was mindbladed a total of five times across the game! I'd recommend some space excedrin for that. The award of Most Targeted player (counting inhibited targets as well, but not protective inhibits) also goes to @DrakeMarshall, who was targeted a total of 8 times! Runner ups are @Verdance with 7 (People really didn't trust you after C4) and @coco.pudding with 6 (most inhibited player?)! Popular! The title of Corpse-Mindblader goes to @Through the living Wahr who attempted to mindblade Myst and Penguin after their deaths! Honorary mention to @Verdance for saying he would mindblade Penguin (who was dead). Macabre! The Luck and Chance award goes to @___/Mippo! The coin flip killed you in C2 but spared you in C6! You've truly experienced both sides of the spectrum! Go do some gambling! (Don't actually) The Honorary Elim award does go to @Verdance for defending both Star and Mippo so passionately Honorary mention to @The Unknown Medallion in C6 and C7. The elims appreciate your service! Thank you everyone, and may the Slug be with you!
  2. Goolius the taynix sat alone and sad amongst the chaos as the remaining suspects argued. “We’re the Superiority! We can’t just kill him!” “He’s too dangerous to be left alive!” “It’s not the Superiority way!” "Do it," said Goolius. The others turned to him in surprise. “I volunteer for execution,” he said, softly. “Just… Get the right person tomorrow. Please.” “Victory?” Asked Azren, hopefully. “Victory? No, Azren,” Goolius said. “The shroud of the dissidents has fallen. Begun, the fall of the Diplomacy has.” ----------------- These were trying times, but Zrraii felt sure they would pass the test. The attempt on its life - the hyperjump - had left it scarred and deformed, but its resolve has never been stronger. Even now, as many other technicians fled, Zrraii grew its crystals to each broken system, diagnosing, fixing, working on a thousand tasks simultaneously. The explosions had heavily damaged several critical systems, but they had time - the Diplomacy had backups. They could fix this. Crystals on the outskirts of the maintenance pathways crushed underfoot. Again? Zrraii took stock of itself. The last hyperjump had taken so much out of it. Could it do so again? A million calculations running through its system. No. It couldn’t. As the attacker approached, Zrraii focused on growing as many crystals as it could over the most critical systems of the station, protecting them as best as it could from further destruction. Perhaps it was always meant to be like this. The cytonics had been a fluke. Resonants never ran from conflict. They grew. They accepted. And so Zrraii accepted. “Luminous beings are we,” it said, as the assassin drew close, “not this crude matter.” Crystal shards sprinkled onto the ground. Zrraii had moved on to its next adventure. --------- Verdance was executed! They were a Loyal Citizen and a Cytonic Mindblader, Inhibitor, and Cytonic Communicator!! 3. "It's over, Cryax!" Penguin yelled, "I have the high ground!" Around them, alarms blared and people ran frantically. "This is speciesm against Kitsen!" Cryax shouted back indignantly, "Of course you have the high ground, you overgrown bird!" "It's not specieism! It's a geographical, tactical fact!" The Heklo hefted a long piece of debris, swinging it like a baseball bat. "Yeah, well? You underestimate my power!" Cryax reached for a handful of Evershore sand from a pocket. "You will not survive a second time!" Penguin charged. Cryax screamed and threw the sand at the Heklo's eyes. "NO! I hate sand! It's coarse, it's irritating, and -" Fueled by pure desperation, Cryax jumped as high as he could, bounced off Penguin's makeshift weapon and swung around to deliver a flying Kitsen kick to the Heklo's temple! Penguin crumpled to the floor. Cryax breathed heavily. Looks like he'd somehow escaped death once again. Sparks flew from a nearby panel, almost singeing his fur. Right. Emergency, Cryax caught his breath, and took off running. The station was falling apart. They had to get to safety. Penguin's body lay abandoned on the ground. ------------ IcedOutPenguin was executed! They were a Loyal Citizen and a Cytonic Mindblader, Concussioneer, and Non-Cytonic Communicator!! 5. Quoth-Yithuquoth stood in the middle of the square, tentacles crossed behind his back. He had not tried to escape. Superiority Security would trace Kitar's last transmission to him soon. He had eaten a good meal, put his affairs in order, and walked under the Administrator's balcony, trailed by citizens and his fellow suspects. "So this is how democracy dies," he says, "with thunderous applause." He saw the Administrator watching from his window. Behind his back, the tentacles crossed into a rude gesture. Petty, but satisfying. A gust behind him. A scent of rain. "I'm sorry," Aire murmured, unseen to all others. "I can't save you." "I don't expect to be saved," Quoth-Yithuquoth said. "Did you bring what I asked for?" Something was pressed into his fingers - a small clip-on microphone. Quoth-Yithuquoth faced the mob, smiled. "My friends, I am Quoth-Yithuquoth the Solquis." His voice projected across the square. "My family, my species, has always been loyal to the Superiority. Everyone smiles and says 'Ah, the Solquis, so peaceful, so co-operative, prime examples of good Superiority citizens!'" Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the armored forms of Security at the fringes of the crowd. "The Superiority has not been kind to the Solquis," he said mournfully. "They call us docile, but deny us Primary Intelligence and citizenship. Our planet is used only for its resources, my people only as drudge workers!" "My friends, my friends, the Diplomacy is a lie. This station is not an outstretched hand, it is a fist that will take your best people and your resources and give you little in return. You know this, we all know this." Security was pushing through the crowd now, getting closer. "My friends, I just wanted to ask your forgiveness!" Quoth-Yithuquoth was suddenly shouting, "Forgive me for my impetuousness, for my actions! We will bring the wrath of the Superiority to this sector, but it will be to save you from this false friendship!" He was taken now, being dragged into a waiting van. "My friends, when the Superiority comes again, resist! Stay free! I love-" his words cut off as he was taken away. The crowd murmured amongst themselves. Aire pushed a button. The attack on Zrraii yesterday had not a complete failure. Their secondary task to kill the Resonant had failed. Their primary task to plant charges in the life support system had not. Explosions shook the Diplomacy. Red lights flooded the square and alarms began to blare. In the darkness, Quoth-Yithuquoth closed his eyes, and pleaded again for forgiveness. ---------- Smartslug was a smart slug. When, in the chaos of noise and lights, attackers came to kill him, he simply hyperjumped away. Smartslug 1, attackers 0 ------ DrakeMarshall was executed! 6. "I see through the lies of Azren," Goolius the slug cried, weapon raised in its tail "I will bring peace, freedom, justice and security to the Superiority!" “My allegiance is also the Superiority, to democracy!” Azren shouted back, her own weapon trained on Kitar. Kitar shouted, "She's not with us, Goolius, she's against us!" "Only the Dissidents think in absolutes!" Azren screamed. Goolius thought very hard. "Goolius, Kitar's a dissident!" Azren tried again. "From my point of view Azren is the dissident!" Goolius wailed. "Then you are lost!" Azren screamed back. Superiority Security arrived again, right before the violence could begin. The suspects were pressed against walls, stripped of weapons, and - what's this? Kitar had an encrypted high-gain radio that was not standard issue for medics! "You'd better come with us," said the Chief. Kitar wailed, but could see no point in resisting. She had just wanted the best for her people, the UrDail... "I'm sorry," she said, though no one knew to who exactly, as she was taken away. ------------ Zrraii enjoyed its job. Its crystals spread far and wide through the life support systems of the Diplomacy. It didn't possess the technology in the way that Figments did, but Zrraii would argue that the Resonants had just as much of a command over technology, despite being so different. Like a spider's web, its crystals in the far flung corridors picked up footsteps coming to its central core minutes before the attackers arrived. They were good. Zrraii only had minutes to react. Resonants aren't known for being particularly mobile. Zrraii had grown into the Diplomacy over decades. That said, Resonants aren't particularly known for being Cytonic either. The attackers found their way into a room occupied by a gigantic green crystal spire with hundreds of outgrowths with hammers, prepared to shatter it. The face in the crystal smiled. Zrraii prepared for the greatest adventure of its life. The attackers charged. And the room was suddenly empty. --------- Through the Living Star was executed! 9. “This is outrageous, it’s unfair!” Nail protested, as the mob bore down on him. “I’m not a killer! I’m just a simple messenger!” He could fight them off. As a Burl, he was much larger and stronger than most of the other species, but he’d been trying so hard to learn to be a good Superiority citizen! He’d taken vows of nonviolence and enlightenment! He’d worked so hard be the first Burl to be acknowledged as possessing Primary Intelligence! Unlike yesterday, the crowd was unanimous. Cryax was nowhere to be found after he had teleported away the previous day, that sneaky Kitsen. So now he was the sole target of suspicion. Nail sat down heavily onto the pavement as Naux read out the list of his perceived crimes. Goolius, on Naux’s shoulder, mimicked every third word. Nail loved the Superiority. He loved it so much that he wouldn’t violate their principles even as his doom drew close. In the end, Superiority Security broke up the crowd. Picked him up, took him to a big portal to some place where they said no one could hurt him, and where he could hurt no one. Nail closed his eyes, trusted in the Superiority, and walked in. ----------------- Naux wasn’t one to brag, usually, but he was really one of the most powerful people in the entire Diplomacy. Not only was he a cytonic Kitsen, he was the cytonic Kitsen, with a veritable array of powers at his disposal! Mindblades! Inhibition! Even Communication! Truly no other Kitsen could be so blessed! He declared as much to his attackers, in the formal way of the Kitsen. Cowards, all of them, ambushing him. But he, at the very least, would do the honorable thing and warn them of his nigh-unlimited power, so they might have a chance to reconsider attacking him. A little bit into the fray, Naux began to realize that there might be perhaps a gap in his abilities - the ability to jump out of dangerous situations - He’d never needed it before! Kitsen never run! And besides, he was so powerful! As mindblades flew and crashed against inhibition barriers, Naux found himself wishing he had mastered just one more ability. “Ironic,” said one of his killers, wiping blood off their knife. “All that power… He could save others from death, but not himself.” “The Tragedy of Sir Naux the Powerful,” lamented the other. ----------- In her office, Aire took in the report. Two more loyalists dead. She regretted those deaths, of course. She was still raised to believe in peace and nonviolence. But she would regret letting the Superiority solidify their grasp on this sector more. She reached into the encrypted radio, found the encrypted frequency. “This is Ichor. Begin phase two.” ----------- Fizz9 was executed, They were a Loyal Citizen and a Cytonic Communicator! Myst was killed! 10. “Report,” said Aire, in her own office. “The suspects have been released from detainment, Chief Winnifred wishes to formally register their complaint that this is a terrible idea.” Silas, one of her Kitsen spies. “Multiple reports of human sightings in the North sector, we’re verifying the more credible ones.” Besk, a Heklo analyst. “Human’s been quiet,” Aire murmured. “I’d expected more… violence?” “Maybe it’s a nice human?” asked one of her Tanuzedran spies, only to be laughed down. “Most probably, it’s biding its time. It might be intelligent enough to try and make a break for the spaceports,” said Besk. Aire hummed. “Good thought. Tell Chief Winnifred to send more patrols to the spaceport. Silas, what’s the status of the suspects?” “We’ve located the escaped Dione, he claims to have been attacked and that he had to hyperjump out of jail to save his own life.” “Do they want police protection?” “They said they were attacked in police protection, ma’am, so no.” Aire laughed. “Fair. Continue to watch them. I want eyes on each of the suspects, eyes on the Chief, and extra protection for the Administrator. Make it so.” A handful of salutes, and her team of spies and analysts left the room. Aire floated down into her transceiver, flicked a few switches in a different combination. “Report,” She said. “We’re out of custody and safe, Ichor.” Said a voice through the static. “Ready to proceed to the next phase on your word.” “Make sure your attack lands tonight,” Aire said, “then we’ll proceed.” ------- Rane wished there could have been rain. They knew someone would come looking for them, either Superiority Security or the killers to finish the job. And now there they were, two figures cornering Rane in an alleyway. Could they Jump again? They hadn't consciously done so, the first time... "Inhibit them," said one of the figures, and Rane's heart sank. I'm sorry, parents. A knife through their gut, and Rane thought no more. --------- Cryax and Nail stared each other down, both suddenly in the middle of a mob. Several chanted Cryax's name, it seemed like an equal amount wanted Nail's blood. In the end, they flipped a coin, and Cryax saw his fate clear. Yet, as fingers began to close around his neck, Cryax closed his eyes and jumped Cryax opened his eyes - he was not dead! He was in his ship, in the spaceport, if only there wasn't a blockade placed to stop a human escaping! Cryax sank down in his seat, and began to wonder how long he could hide out in his fighter. -------- Mippo was executed, but survived by hyperjump! Twinstorm was killed! 11. “Report,” said the Administrator, rubbing their temples. Two datapads lay on their desk. Before them was a large golden Tenasi in crimson tactical armor – Winnifred, the grizzled chief of the Diplomacy Security Force. Aire was present as well, from the strong smell of mint. “I’ve prepared a list of suspects,” Aire said, “it’s been sent to your datapad. I didn’t get a good look at the intruder in the control booth, but it was a large biped, which rules several species out.” “I have my own list,” Winnifred rumbled, gesturing to the second datapad. “There are several overlaps with Spymaster Aire’s, but I have focused on the perpetrators of the vandalization, which do not rule out non-biped species.” “Your thoroughness is always appreciated, Chief,” said Aire. “May I ask about your progress on the human front?” “We believe the human was not responsible for the terrorism, Spymaster Aire. Until we receive reports of attacks, they are relegated to a lower priority.” “I appreciate your help, Chief Winnifred, but terrorism falls under my purview, yours is catching feral animals -” The Administrator tuned them out. They held up both datapads, consolidated them into a single list. They raised an eyebrow and waved the datapad, cutting off his and Aire’s escalating argument. “This list contains two taynix.” A suppressed snort came from Aire’s direction. Winnifred did not smile. “Slugs are sentient, therefore capable of dissidence.” The Administrator rubbed their forehead harder. “Aire?” Aire took over smoothly. “Combining our lists, we have 12 suspects. For who could have attacked me: Azren, Varvax; Rane, Dione; Qian and Penguin, both Heklo; Nail, Burl. On suspicion of vandalism: Naux and Cryax, Kitsen; Quoth-Yithuquoth, Solquis; Kitar, UrDail; Zrraii, Resonant; …Smartslug and Goolius, Taynix.” She paused. “Chief Winnifred has already seen fit to detain all twelve. Yes, even the Taynix.” The Administrator held up a finger. “The Taynix have names?” “Apparently they named themselves.” Aire said, smelling of iron. “Sentience, and therefore capacity for evil,” said the Chief smugly. Aire began to say something, then cut herself off, “How did you detain a Resonant?” The Chief smiled. “We asked it politely to grow some crystals into the Station.” “...Strong initiative, Chief,” murmured the Administrator, “Although such hasty action may be construed as aggressive.” “We have reports that the detainees have already started throwing accusations around and may become aggressive,” Aire said. “My recommendation is that they be released but put under surveillance.” The Chief snorted. “And allow the hidden dissidents to commit further crimes?” “The citizens have rights, lest you forget, Chief Primary Intelligence, the remaining citizens are already in outrage - and what about the human-” “Stop.” The Administrator rose. “Chief Winnifred, you have authority to detain them for a single night without charge. They must be released after.” The Chief saluted. Aire made a sound of protest. “Aire,” the Administrator said, “I want you at the Station monitoring everything they say or do.” Aire sighed. “...Yes, Administrator.” ----------- Qian the Heklo loved democracy. He loved the Superiority. But a guy can't deny that sometimes, to the outside observer, the Superiority could look like a 'xenophobic, (eventually) genocidal interstellar alien empire'! Not that Qian believed that, the Superiority was great! It was just a perception issue! And the great thing about the Superiority is that one could give voice to all kinds of opinions, right? Right guys? "It's Treason, then!" Yelled Penguin, another Heklo. Chaos erupted. Qian the Heklo had to be removed from the Security Station due to excessive threats of violence from the other suspects. Quite against his wishes, he was placed on a shuttle headed for a place where he would be safe, and could do no harm to anyone anymore. -------- Rane missed weather. Being on the Diplomacy was great and all, but they half-wished they were on Monrome with its wild and whirling storms. That was probably rightparent. Leftparent had stayed indoors their entire life. The air was so still here. Well, no, inside the shared room in the Security Station, the air did crackle like a storm. Guards had already come to remove Qian, but the tension hadn't left the room. How did they get themselves into this situation? They supposed this was it for this draft... Getting sent to the Diplomacy had seemed exciting and grand to both parents, but now they were under suspicion of terrorism, of all things. A figure settled next to them, a little too close for Rane's comfort. "Apologies, friend, but I like my spa-" A knife thrust towards their ribs- Rane screamed - - and they were somewhere else. Their home on the Diplomacy, outside of the Security Station. Safe! They were safe! They rejoiced! Also they apparently had some cytonic ability after all! That boded well for them as a draft! Then realized they had now committed a jailbreak, which was an actual crime. That boded much less well. Oh stars. ------------ You have all received a non-cytonic message! 17. The crowd beneath the Administrator's balcony was already in full panic a good while before their scheduled statement. “A human-” “Are we in danger-” “How can the superiority be trusted-” “Who’s our leak?” The Administrator asked, adjusting the mic clipped to their collar. “The doctor that tended to Keeper Murray,” Aire said from beside them. “Dr. Feadra was not told of the origin of the bite. But she began asking about the unusual bite pattern and speculating after the visit. We have her confined and access to all communication cut off, but the scent is already on the wind.” The Administrator did not swear–Diones in general did not–but for a moment they looked like they were about to buck centuries of tradition. They refrained, but it seemed a close thing. “I take full responsibility,” Aire said. The Administrator breathed deeply. “Blame will come later. For now, we must wrest back control of the story.” They picked up their datapad, scrolled through the prepared statement. “All under control,” they murmured. “All under control,” Aire agreed. ~~~ “Citizens under the Superiority! Be not anxious.” A hush fell onto the crowd as Administrator Petra began their speech, their voice projected across the square. Aire’s people would be among the crowd, observing. Guards around the perimeter. Aire herself overlooking everything from the control booth. All under control. “Of course,” Petra began, “by now you are all aware of the incident at Exotic Species Education Enclosure and–I am not taking questions yet–as your Administrator, I assure you that you are in no danger!” “The human ate its keeper!” “I heard it already massacred the rest of the exotic species!” “I heard-” From the control booth overlooking the square, Aire triggered a low, bassy note that drowned out the individual voices until they stopped trying to interrupt. The Administrator waited until the sound died down. “I see the rumors have spread like wildfire. Here are the facts! There have been no deaths! There will be no deaths. The Superiority has the situation all under -” “-Administrator!” That was Aire’s voice in their earpiece, sounding panicked. “There’s someone in the-” All the lights went out. The crowd began to scream. “Do not panic!” The Administrator tried to command, but the mic wasn’t working anymore. “Evacuate in an orderly-” They were cut off as their own guards tried to bundle them back into their office. “I’m alright, I’m safe!” They cried. “Make sure the crowd doesn’t stampede!” The screams died down eventually. Petra forced themselves into meditation. They’d never witnessed such chaos, such barbarism. Aire returned to their side, similarly shaken. Someone had broken into her control booth and smashed the systems. She reported some injuries in the panic, but no deaths. And…. “You should probably see for yourself, Administrator.” Administrator Petra returned to the balcony, where the lights had been restored. In the middle of the square, in large, blood-red letters each as tall as a Tenasi, was painted a message. The Superiority Will Not Protect You. ~~~ QF79: Death and Murder in the Stars has begun! 18. Verna returned to the site of the house a few weeks later, all alone. Dressed as all had known her in life, all in black, in a mourning veil. Over the next few days, working in silence, she erected thirteen gravestones in the empty yard. Upon each stone was carved a name. Warren, wisp-touched. Archie, idealistic. Brax, the magician. Luminair, the unsung hero. Patrick, a true friend. Mabel, purest of heart. Talasin, the silent. K Tims, the sage. Harley, inquisitor. Randal, pathfinder. Monopoly, generous. Liam, fallen hero. . . . Verna, killer. On Brax's stone, she placed the remaining cards of his deck. To K, she returned the bone yo-yo. The others would be preserved. On Mabel's gravestone, she rested a silver star-tipped cane. The wind blew over the crumbling ruin of stone and wood, and the new set of gravestones in front of it. A memorial. A warning. She stood vigil for a night and a day. Then, she left. The sun shone bright, but Verna cast no shadow. It remained by the front of the house for a moment longer, then walked to the ruin, disappearing across its threshold.
  19. I think the issue was, as you pointed out, the risk/reward wasn't great, even if I'm trying to play self-interestedly. My main goal was to stay alive, and when I did not have the gun, my options were 90% chance of finding a useless item, or a 80% chance of staying cleared and thus not executed. So in that scenario looking for items just wasn't worth it. I did try striking out and looking for items a few nights, and it just felt like I kept getting punished for it. Locations! Again, favorite part of Betrayal is uncovering new rooms and gaining advantages/disadvantages based on rooms. Excited for whenever this happens. I'm a little confused about the two bullet points - When you say the same location can be found independently, is that separate from the above condition where you try to visit a room based on what you think another player went? Options being - I explore a room or I try to find the room that X went to? I think it might be interesting to simply announce in the day thread what rooms have been found, but not by who, perhaps? As to the other changes to make the scenarios harder to rule out, sure, that sounds perfectly fair. Myst ruined it for us here by blabbing about what scenario it was, otherwise we'd have been paranoid a while longer Also, re: dead doc, I'd love to be in a Survival alliance with you and Striker
  20. What? I didn't do any backstabbing, really I only had the gun the very last cycle! See, I left you alive because you were wishing to be alive for one game. Wish granted Your following idea really kinda broke the game a little there I find it very funny that you were forced to also pretend to follow someone when you had the gun. Yeah thoughts wise following mechanic was kind of abused. I did like how the gun and hero role going to voters rewarded active players, though I think players who weren't voting had little incentive to be invested in the game. I also really enjoyed the first couple cycles of trying to figure out what scenario we were in. The setup and explore phase has always been my favorite part of the board game, and I wish there was more to do in the later nights other than just search for item/follow for n0 @Fizz9 @Conure1243 @Through The Living Star Hope you guys had a fun first game! Fizz, you were so annoying that day when you had the gun and was trying to get everyone to vote on me I was halfway convinced you were a villager who was just tunneling rather than a killer. Well played. Conure, I appreciate you rethinking your vote on that day, also well done accidentally fooling me xD. Star, I love how you were caught in a tie twice where one of you and another player had to be lying and was proven to be innocent twice, only to get the gun the very next night. I respect the integrity and story choice. Again, in my mind, you're a hero and you won alongside us @Myst Thanks for the cards Hope you liked how I used them. @Miss Fallen respect for the day you almost manipulated the mob on me, and for breaking the game slightly I loved that Verna got to collect souvenirs from both of you. @StrikerEZ Glad I didn't have to murder you, would have been awkward since we're co-GMing the next game @Divergent @Through the living Wahr @Mint11 Taken too soon @___ @Qianweilian @Verdance @Akimikoisthecutest Also taken unjustly, very sad Sorry for disbelieving you Mippo. As always, thank you to @Araris Valerian and @coco.pudding for the fun game and excellent writeups! I enjoyed writing Verna, and thank you to everyone that interacted with her!
  21. Verna could hear them. Brax, murmuring about the Void card. Patrick, crying about his betrayal. K, terrified in the dark. Even Liam, not yet dead, but already ensnared, asking himself why he gave up his soul. She didn't hear Mabel. Mabel was the only one who had resisted. And the house. Now it chose to speak to her, on the verge of letting her go. Now it whispered to her sweet nothings, a thousand promises. It would open itself up to her, it would keep her and her friends together. She wouldn't need to be out among humans again, she would be free. Smoke wisped from the weapon, from her wrist all the way up her arm. Verna glided through endless corridors and through countless doors, smoke billowing behind her. What an irony. To leave the house alive, she would stake a part of herself to it forever. Tragic, yet fitting. There was no escape from human selfishness, really. She could have done the right thing. Refused to fire. Then she would die, but Variel and Liam would live. Still. Liam was a killer. And she would just be dead. Untainted of soul, but dead and kept by the house regardless. It all came back to selfishness, in the end. Variel would live. His soul remained untouched, though Verna privately thought it was more for lack of temptation than any real strength of will. Still. He alone would escape free. Most of Verna would leave with him. Her shadow would remain. She wondered if Mabel was still free. In refusing to fire the weapon, had her soul ascended beyond the grasp of the house? Verna hoped so. Mabel deserved to be among the stars. Too late for the rest of them. The innocents, killed by the house. The killers, kept by the house. Finally, Verna entered a dark room, found her target for tonight. Liam had collapsed in a comfortable chair, exhausted from his run. He was no longer running. Under her veil, a sad smile. In her hand, the smoking gun. "Welcome home," she said.
