I follow the excavation forwards in the rough direction of the forest, keeping my hand of the left-side wall, slowly shuffling forwards to make sure I don't fall into any more holes.

I start to carefully explore the hole I'm in once I get my bearings. I take care to stay away from the center to make myself harder to see.

I keep running, hoping to get to a place that's less open. At the same time I start pulling in the rope to make sure I won't trip on it.

I immediately start running towards the nearest exit, trying to run past one of the items lying on the ground to pick it up.

Karin nodded. "Sure," she said with a quick nod. She felt slightly bad about the fact that she'd likely pushed Althea into calling it a day, but it wasn't nearly enough for her to actually suggest going on. The idea of a hot bath was far too attractive for that to happen. She wondered how they were going to handle the bath though. Going in wearing all their clothing would be a bit weird, but the alternative wasn't really that interesting either. She shrugged, she could always figure that one out later.

Karin threw a glance at the hotspring, wondering if they couldn't just call it a day. It wasn't as if the voices were going to go somewhere after all. She sighed. "Sure," she told Althea with a shrug. "Might be a decent distraction from this wall at least." still, she would have prefered the hotspring for that, maybe a couple of hours of sleep as well. She always found that nice, even if she technically didn't need it.

I'd suggest putting your definition on the alleyverse and their police force in the pm first, instead of deciding on it yourself, mostly since a lot of other depictions don't show it as nearly such a horrible place to live. Also, one issue I find with your character is that their backstory and personality seem to describe him as someone who doesn't mind killing criminals. Honestly, to me your character sounds more like a vigilante than a normal cop. It would make more sense if you add something about him being conflicted about having to kill people, instead of making it sound like he doesn't really care about criminals he kills. The first sounds like an interesting personality, the second sounds like someone far enough off the deep-end that he's a danger to society. Also, on a more meta note, I have a large problem with the fact that this seems like a character that portrays exactly the issue with police brutality that has been in the news on and off, but comes off (from his description) as making it sound like a good thing.

No, but it does leave them with no excuse when they kill criminals instead of trying to arrest them while they easily could have arrested them, which, given that the city does have a functional government, will likely get them kicked of the force, especially since that type of behavior will likely get them to kill someone whose crime would never deserve something even close to the death penalty, or kill an innocent by mistake. Edit: Also, if you specifically kill almost all criminals you face some of the remaining ones will likely have the GBs assassinate you.

Given that his Investure is basically the perfect method for taking down investure users (and to a lesser degree normal people) in a way that makes sure you don't have to kill them that argument doesn't really work that well.

Also, how is someone like that still on the police force? Someone with a kill first attitude would be kicked out quite quickly, possibly even arrested for murder or police brutality.

Mari nodded, quickly walking around to building to the back entrance. From her pockets she grabbed a pair of fingerless gloves and slipped them on. Checking the knuckle protectors she nodded and quietly opened the door, slipping into the building.

In that case we should probably come up with a plot, or at least where the story starts. Do we also want to talk about having a couple of people lead the plot?

The movie probably actually confirms this theory, or at least strengthens it, possibly unintentionally, since in the movie she's seen doing a training session on edible plants in the Capitol.

Also, if anyone wants to feel more sad about Foxface, I once read a theory she knew what the berries did and used them to suicide but make it seem like an accident, since she knew she couldn't beat the other candidates and this would be less painful, while the way it was done would make the gamemakers think it was an accident so they wouldn't go after her family in retribution.

So Batman without his no killing rule?
-
True, but if you'd always try to stay safe than if you're part of the last two the gamemakers will likely try to force a confrontation, because otherwise it isn't interesting anymore for the public.

Book 1 had a pacifist tribute, or at least one that didn't actively try to kill others. She actually made it to the final 4 or 5 remaining tributes.

True enough, though without specific confirmation on the threshold there isn't that much to go on for Era 2 characters. I actually once read something that the shock of being born might be enough to Snap, though I think that was just someone's theory.
-
For Allomancers it isn't really a thing anymore though, at least not in Era 2. Harmony lowered the thresholds so the whole beating stuff wasn't necessary anymore to Snap.

Also, a fair number of characters are Radiants, which are required to be broken in some way, which is rather difficult to do without creating a traumatic backstory. It's possible, of course, but more difficult. Edit: As for my personal views, at least for my own characters, it's because the backstories are important to the concept/idea behind the character. If I want to create a remorseful assassin, I need a reason for why they became an assassin in the first place, as well as what triggered said remorse. And exactly how this works would also influence exactly how they handle what they did. Someone forced into becoming an assassin would want to get out, but someone voluntarily doing it would need a trigger for coming to understand that what they did was wrong. The same basically goes for all my characters. If a concept is interesting, I create it, explore what backstories make sense. Sometimes this is traumatic, since that would be the most likely explanation for their behavior, and sometimes it's much more normal, without any real trauma. But even then, you kind of need at least something, because otherwise your character will often be rather bland. Sure, exceptions exists, but they're exceptions. Most of the time, someone with a perfectly normal life isn't going to be voluntarily joining the guilds and fight. Even the ones without any trauma would have some sort of reason, since normal people normally don't go around putting themselves in danger without one. So, to end my rambling, I feel that a character needs some form of driving force for why they do what they do. Sometimes this is a traumatic backstory (since it's easier to do or makes it easier to fit into existing story lines), and sometimes it's more mundane, but they (almost) always need something, otherwise your character will likely be rather boring or feel unrealistic.
