  1. Very interesting! Good catch. That connection will give the surgebinding chart folks something to chew on! By the Almighty -- symmetries that produce asymmetries! So Friction and Adhesion might be pronounced something like "Betep" and "Peteb" (possibly with some "ve"s mixed in there somewhere, depending if the straight lines are letters or screw-you's!) Transportation and Gravitation make more sense if they're upside-down. Something like "Kenese?ep" and "Pe?esenek" perhaps. Perhaps there are other pairs that are near-palindromes when pronounced, but look different when written.
  2. Interesting. I assumed that the gems used in shardplate are the same general type as those used for fabrials. Are they different? I always figured that what "stores" the stormlight in gems are the living spren stuck inside, and that when gems go dun, it's because the spren either die or escape. Or perhaps they're still in there, but they've "metabolized" all the stormlight. Alternately, if shardplate is some sort of spren parasite/symbiote, then Kaladin could have been feeding it directly from the stormlight inside himself. Perhaps something to do with with his Nahel bond with Syl?
  3. Question the first: Is Shardplate alive (or perhaps more accurately, undead)? I was struck by the similarity in description between shardplate and the skin of Nan Balat's axehound, which got me thinking. Shardplate seems to have many of the characteristics of Roshar's native fauna. Shardplate requires gemhearts to move and function, just like the greatshells. Shardplate will regenerate if broken. Earth crustaceans can regenerate -- I'm not sure if we've heard specifically that Rosharan ones can, but it seems likely. Its natural color is "slate gray" -- perhaps a reference to the geologic physiology of Rosharan wildlife? We know that chasmfiends and the like have symbiotic relationship with spren that allow them to defy the usual laws of biology. The strength and speed shardplate lends the wearer could be the effect of this relationship. Unlike most matter, shardplate can't be cut by shardblades. Shardblades cut the physical aspect of inanimate matter and the (cognitive/spiritual? I forget which) aspect of living matter. If shardplate were neither alive nor dead, but some sort of stormlight-animated husk, then it stands to reason it would interact strangely with shardblades. There has to be some sort of logical reason for this, since artifabrians are able to partially replicate the effect in half-shards. When a surgebinder has breathed in stormlight, they don't have to breathe air (and they can also heal faster, I think?) -- which suggests that stormlight has life-sustaining properties. Back in the days of the Heralds/original radiants, armor didn't need gems to function, right? Maybe back in those days, the plate was still alive in its own right. In modern Roshar, you have to power up your plate with infused gemstones (trapped spren). Wasn't there some scene where Syl reacted uncomfortably to shardplate? I could see why she would be upset with humans cramming random spren into an empty husk with no regard for the natural order. Has this theory been explored? Question the second: Did Lin Davar's secret soulcaster ever really work, or was he actually a radiant? He was in deep with the Ghostbloods or something, right? Maybe like Jasnah, his soulcaster was just for show as well. (Oh, the irony!) Sure, the steward claimed to have been trained to use it -- but did he ever actually accompany lord Davar and the surveyor? Maybe his "training" was just for show. The whole thing just seems fishy.

    Translation Stuff

Images for my translation guide post
  5. A little of both. " I told you where it came from, the writing system, right? That I told Isaac, “I want it to look like waveforms,” and he developed it to look like waveforms on the little thing when you speak voice- and things like that, and that was my goal for the [writing] system was something that was a line with waveforms across it. And he developed it then" http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=987 Technically, Navani's pages are transliterated English (English words written using Rosharan letters). Jasnah's pages get even weirder - they're sort of a phonetic transcription (English words written out has they sound, rather than how they're spelled, using Rosharan letters). We've seen a bit of actual Rosharan language here and there, usually as glyphs (shash, sas nahn, vev gesheh, etc.)
  6. Interesting. Is there a reason Kharbranth might be associated with Ruby fabrials?

    Tendendah Glyph

Thank you! The T, Ds and H are a bit dubious, but I'm confident about the Ns. And yes, the shape of the glyph was inspired by a tern in flight, but at the same time meant to be vaguely humanoid.

    Tendendah Glyph

Just a little something I put together for an upcoming game set loosely within the Cosmere.
  9. The original posts were on a forum that has since disappeared, but I did hang onto my physical notes. I did sort of a recap of the process in one of my posts in the translation thread: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6487-thaylen-and-alethi-glyph-translation/?p=105582 It was quite the fun puzzle to solve! The hardest part was actually figuring out where the breaks were between the letters. For instance, "bi" looks a lot like "f". Once I worked out what most of the individual symbols were, it was just a matter of cracking the code. @Argent - Which pictures are missing? Not part of the guide, I hope?
  10. If there's no way to control the content of the ticker, it might be worth considering whether its cost (in terms of mod time, spoiled readers, and general forum organization) outweigh its usefulness. Just a suggestion. I appreciate all the hard work the admins and mods put in here!
  11. To chime in with my 2 clips... After having just devoured Bands of Mourning and Secret History, I popped into the appropriate spoiler boards to catch up on recent advances in realmatic theory, but I found a lot of the thread topics vague to the point of uselessness. "[spoilers] That thing in the place!", "[spoilers] Why did you-now-who do you-know-what?", "[spoilers] Spoilers for spoilering spoiler Hoid spoiler!" Apparently this is because some sort of news-ticker is scraping the spoiler boards and reposting things to the main page? I'm all for preventing accidental spoilers, but rather than having to censor thread titles *within* the spoiler boards, I think it would be better to not automatically repost those threads in the first place. Just a thought...
  12. FYI for anyone who's into the Mistborn RPG, there are some beautiful cast metal gaming dice in various alloys being offered right now through Kickstarter. They're luxury gaming accessories to be sure, but they seem like a great fit for a Mistborn campaign! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/837745346/cast-metal-gaming-dice/description
  13. Also, there's some reference to Thaylen words sounding all smashed together, which matches the feel of the writing. Yeah, it seems like the Alethi glyphs and Thaylen writing have some basic shapes in common, but the glyph versions are reflected symmetrically.
  14. As I recall, Brandon doesn't do the glyphs himself. He spoke about it at one of the conventions or signings a while back... He worked with one of the illustrators... -- Isaac Stewart, I think -- to come up with something symmetric and artistic that matched his idea of what the writing is like. So you'd probably need to get in touch with the illustrator: http://www.isaacstewart.com/
  15. Not that I'm aware of. Furthermore, I don't' think we've even pinned down what the Th sub-glyph looks like. It's in some of the Highprince name glyphs, but we haven't quite cracked those. I'm pretty sure I've changed my best guess for Th since drawing that doodle version of thath, so it's probably doubly wrong!
  16. There are three (four) sets of glyphs that share the same basic structure, but with different embellishments: The ten fundamental glyphs seen on one of the shardblade illustrations The ten Knights Radiant glyphs on the WoK endpaper The embossed "swords" on the WoK and WoR covers (The "voidcaller" glyphs on the WoK endpaper appear to share a similar root, but with different warping/symmetry.) This could be because they're slightly different words (e.g. jes, jeseh, Jezrien, Jezerezeh, etc.) or just because of artistic license.
  17. Fantastic! I prettied up the keys for the glyphs, women's script, and Thaylen and fixed a couple small errors on the Vorin numerals key:
  18. I've tried, and they just give me a headache. Unlike the women's script, the glyphs use actual Alethi words, not transliterated English. We can read glyphs like Bridge Four because we know how they're pronounced (in this case, "Vev Gesheh"). The translation key is still very rudimentary, and has a hard time with highly-stylized glyphs. Since we don't actually know the Alethi word for Windrunner (which is probably some horrendous mouthful like "Setavotachey") it's really hard to distinguish the actual letters from screw-you squiggles. Once we completely crack the glyphs, we should be able to read just about anything. That seems to be the case. They're similar to Thaylen in that regard. Since the glyphs are bilaterally symmetrical, you can read either side and get all the letters. The convention seems to be to start at the top center and work down and out, so B would be most consistent with the glyphs we've seen so far.
  19. You're welcome! There are likely number forms we just haven't seen yet that would help deal with that issue. The numerals in WoR really just run through the 20s. Compare 10 and 20 with 1 and 2 - there's probably a similar method for differentiating other numbers.
  20. Yep -- that seems to be the case as far as I can figure based on the latitude markings on the Frostlands map. The numbers give me a headache though, because there doesn't seem to be a word for the number 0 -- at least, not that we've seen so far. So I think the English number "thirty" would be called "twenty-ten" in Alethi, even though it's still written 3-0. That seems as decent a speculation as any for 2015 -- although I'd personally add at least a hint of a vertical line to the palah at the very top so as not to confuse it with vev: While I was at it I went ahead and messed around with the Vorin numeral key some to try and make it more clear. If there are any folks who are familiar with the calendar dates -- do the number names look correct here?
  21. Hmm. How best to handle the ch/th/sh, phonemes then? You can change text to all lowercase with just a few clicks in Word. Although -- I suppose it might be more elegant to set the *h letters as something else entirely, and then whip up a quick VB script macro to replace them in the text. @Kurkistan - Perhaps. I'd need to add lines to the individual letters as well then. Shouldn't be too hard to do. Probably won't get to this again for a while though. If anyone else wants to tweak the .ttf file, have at it! @Chouta -- No website to speak of. I've dabbled in a bit of linguistics, but I'm just doing this for fun. I've been playing around with the untranslated highprince glyphs a bit more, but they're so stylized it's hard to make anything out for certain. I've got 2 or 3 possible readings for each one, but none I'm super happy with.
  22. I finally got around to making a font for the Alethi women's script using my vector files. It's aligned so that you can use underlining to add the lines that connect words. You can write the symbols for ch, sh, and th by using uppercase C, S, and T, and you can write the start-of-sentence marker using a period. I set the letter c to default to a hard c (Alethi K) for ease of casual writing, because I think that's the most common pronunciation in English. For more accurate script, you'll want to change some c's in your text to s's manually based on how they sound. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B19mpDUN_8rSYVk1NENNRmJKY0k/view?usp=sharing Does it look okay?
