  1. Well, for one, reading The Way of Kings is always a good memory. As for the alarms in the library, once I started expecting it, I found it pretty hilarious, especially since the security guard started recognizing me.
  2. Heheh. I'm still attempting to memorize which metal has which Allomantic property from the poster on my wall. I tend to get copper, brass, bronze, and zinc mixed up--how they're paired, mostly. Still almost entirely clueless on which Feruchemical metal does what; I have to look it up usually. Except for copper, because of the Coppermind Wiki. Ah, okay. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.
  3. Do we want to go back and answer Delightful's question now then? I'll see how many I can think of... 1. Brom (Inheritance Cycle) 2. Qui-gon Jinn (Star Wars Saga) 3. Uncle Ben (any iteration of the Spider-Man origin story) 4. Falstaff (Kill Shakespeare--he dies in Vol 2 of this graphic novel series, and there are 4 Vols) 5. Spoilers for Flamecaster by Cinda Williams Chima: 6. Spoilers for The Final Empire: 7. The highwayman in The Accidental Highwayman by Ben Tripp--not the title character but the character everyone else mistakes him for. I have a feeling I'm probably missing some that other people will find obvious, but I've run out of ideas for now.
  4. Ah, this brings back good memories... When I read WoK for the first time, I was also using a library copy. I happen to work in the library from which I borrowed it, and there was something wrong with the security device in the book so that every day when I went in or out of the library's security gates for work, the alarm would sound and I'd have to dig this massive brick of a book out of my backpack and present it to the security guard so he could scan it and confirm that I was not trying to steal it. After this had been happening for like a week straight, I finally got to the point where I expected the alarm to go off and would carry the book under my arm to go through the security gate so I didn't have to stop and dig in my backpack.
  5. People who complain that the air conditioning is making them cold but then refuse to put on an extra layer of clothes like a sensible person and instead insist on jacking up the thermostat to 78 F. What about those of us who are uncomfortably hot and sweating at 78 degrees, even when sitting still? We can't just keep taking our clothes off when we're already down to a single layer. (And even if we could, I'd probably STILL be sweating once I was in only my underwear.)
  6. Okay, I have a random question for any Sharders who live in Australia or have attended school in Australia: what does the calendar of a school year look like for you? What I mean to ask is, in the US the school year usually starts at the beginning of September or in late August, lasts about nine-ish months, and ends in late May or early June, leaving students with the hottest months of the year--June, July, and August--for summer vacation. Does Australia do a similar thing--nine months of school and three months of vacation? If so, do you also get the hottest months of the year off of school? (December, January, and February, I imagine, because Southern Hemisphere.) Or does school in Australia go pretty much year-round, with shorter but more frequent breaks, as some countries do? (I believe Japan is one.)
  7. The one in Australia was #6, Tongues of Serpents. The next one, Crucible of Gold, was mostly in South America--Brazil. #8 starts out with Laurence shipwrecked in Japan.
  8. The app says my books have been downloaded, which I took to mean that they should be available offline, but earlier when I was in an area with no wifi I couldn't even get into the app.
  9. I'm still working on finishing season 3 of Agents of SHIELD. Watched episodes 16 and 17 today ("Paradise Lost" and "The Team").
  10. Ok, so I just read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for the first time not long ago, and this picture reminded me of a question I kept wondering about while I was reading: is "Betelgeuse" pronounced like "Beetlejuice"? ... I don't think I do either, unless you count my iTunes account.
  11. I just picked up the final Temeraire book, League of Dragons, from the library today. I also picked up a Muse album I hadn't listened to before.
  12. Apparently you cannot read an ebook in the OverDrive smartphone app if you have no cell reception and no wifi. Mildly annoying. *confused*
  13. Started reading Unhinged by AG Howard today. It's my first time reading a book on the Overdrive smartphone app (none of my libraries' e-catalogs had my preferred Kindle format), and I'm a little annoyed that there seems to be no way to track my progress through the book. It gives "page x out of y" for each chapter, but not for the book as a whole. I'm enjoying the story, though.
  14. @Darkness Ascendant, how long do you want to give it before moving onto a new question if nobody can answer yours?
  15. Well, "Anne" was more than a season earlier, at the beginning of Buffy season 3, so with 22 episodes in a season and each ep lasting about 45 minutes, that's at least 16.5 hours of Buffy you've watched before getting to your current episode. So it's completely reasonable that you didn't catch the reference.
  16. To me, which character "looks like" the other depends on which story was experienced first by the person comparing them. For example, if I read LOTR and watch the movies before reading The Way of Kings, then I would probably say "I imagine that Kaladin looks like Aragorn." But if I read The Way of Kings First, then the mental image of Kaladin is established in my head and it would feel more appropriate to say, "Aragorn looks a lot like my mental image of Kaladin." I will! I don't think I knew that it was also a book until you mentioned it here, but I feel like I'm committing bookworm heresy if I watch a movie without reading its corresponding book.
  17. I expect it would also help if you were blowing up balloons without a pump or anything.
  18. Upvoted for "Kaymeth." In other news, I have been having issues with the Quote function on my mobile. For some reason, whenever I quote someone and then try to add my input to the post, I can't type anything in the Reply box. Like, my keyboard will come up, but when I hit the letters, nothing appears in the Reply box. Also, whenever I try to reply to this thread from my mobile, it automatically quotes this post by Slowswift without my telling it to. And because of the first problem I mentioned, that keeps me from replying to that thread via mobile at all. In case it matters, my smartphone is a Samsung Galaxy S3, and whenever I attempt to post here with it, I am using a Wi-Fi connection.
  19. Ok, it's on then! Even if we're the only two who show up due to short notice. XD
  20. @little wilson, @Slowswift, @Gaussian, just want to confirm--we ARE doing this tonight, yes? As I mentioned before, I'm happy to take care of the pizza and root beer.
  21. Let's just say the subject matter was so awkward that Brandon's answer was, "Read and never find out."
  22. Slowswift got it.
