Long Game 44: Shadows of Elantris Redux
DrakeMarshall replied to Herowannabe's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Awww thanks Sucks when that happens Hm. I would say that potentially deflecting a lynch is a pretty strong power, with more than niche applications. I guess part of why this confuses me is that evil players might have Derethi pendants too, and if we throw all ours away the evils become comparatively more powerful. The conversion is a significant drawback of the Derethi pendants, but I think I'd echo Aman, in that people should use them at their own discretion depending on the situation, weighing the costs and benefits of doing so. It'd be nice if we could hold the conversion powers in check by using pendants on people who are already converts. But in some cases, altering the lynch could really be decisive, so I sort of feel like it depends. *gasp* are you saying Ateshao shouldn't trust you while you are drunk? Also, people who vote together this early in the game are, if anything, rather unlikely to be in league because they do not want to be seen as such (although that's very IKYK). This game has some interesting dynamics unfolding. I really want to see where this leads.- 1185 replies

Something maybe slightly alignment indicative here. I wondered why Len would ask how the Gyorn's vote was influenced by the pendant. Kind of a strange question, really. I don't really think the Gyorn would ask this though. Because, well, they'd probably be much more focused in the conversion powers of the pendant. If anything, this seems like a possible way to discover the Gyorn later on in the game. Why exactly is stopping endgame lynches on villagers not important...? If you were the Gyorn, it would be fairly risky to say something like this, unless you had already decided you wouldn't be swearing any of the initial converts. Similar to Len, I'm guessing you probably aren't the Gyorn. It strikes me that maybe the conversation is too focused on the Derethi. Granted, the Derethi mechanics are novel, and so there's more to talk about. And I believe our discusion of the Derethi is constructive. But also, if we don't have discussion about the Jeskeri as well, it'll be much harder to find them. Ateshao chomped into a sandwich, eating as hastily as was polite. Something in the potion made him really hungry, and being famished and drinking were two things that did not go very well together. Plus, this bar-whatsit served a right proper sandwich. Good, thick slices of warm bread, a generous portion of cured meats and melted cheese, sourkraut, and a good sauce to crown the lot. "I am a decent duelist. I can challenge him for you, Sule." "Many thanks for the offer, friend," Ateshao nodded gratefully. "I think my eyesight is improved, in some way, but not like I can control it, obviously... I reckon I'd rather share a few choice words with the man, and hear 'im out before it comes to the swordpoint, if it's all the same. Perhaps I should do this, soon..." Ateshao took another sip of his drink, pausing to think for a moment. "If you don't mind my asking, you be a lord by title, yes?" Ateshao wondered aloud, "But you don't very much strike me as hailing from Kae. What's the story what brought you into these parts?"- 1185 replies

“Regrettable. I would’ve been up for a good spar, though I confess dueling has never been my forte. But what with this all,” Ateshao said, gesturing at his eyes, “I reckon mine eyes are shot ‘til things get better.” He carefully cracked an eye open. Its pupil was dilated to a disturbingly large size, and he hastily shut it again. “Ash’s colors-cursed eyes, don’t rightly know what I expected, but not so much this,” he sighed, laughing a little to himself. “That potion man is kayana.” “Bartelemi, Arttesh, take a break for once. Relax! Have a beer." Sahin directed to his voice. "What about you, sule? Another toast? To the king!" ”To the king indeed,” Ateshao nodded, raising the glass that had just been placed in his hand to his lips, idly wondering what it contained as he took a sip. "Say, does this place by any chance sell food?" Excellent, Seonid.- 1185 replies

Hmph, fine then Joe. Of the people who haven't posted yet, it strikes me that Seonid @Seonid has relatively recently (LG40, anyway) advocated using D1 lynches on those who did not post, so I believe it is fair to poke him until he arrives on the scene. Excellent, that sounds entertaining "I reckon you are right," Ateshao answered, tipping the contents of the vial into his garha and swirling it thrice clockwise. "Well, to the picking of poisons," he said with an ironic upturn of lip, then threw the mixture back. "Nights!" he sputtered, coughing as the scalding liquid worked its way down his throat. "Advice: do not gulp down large quantities of boiling liquid if you can help it," Ateshao said sagely. "Though to be honest, I really don't feel all that differe--" Ateshao's right eye twitched, and the pupil narrowed in a moment of too-sharp, painful clarity. At the same time, his left eye wandered off-center for a moment, giving him double-vision. He screwed his eyes shut. Still, the muscles around his eyes continued to twitch spasmodically. "Merciful Domi..." he uttered. "That hurts. Y'know, I sorta hope this isn't permanent." He reached blindly out to the table to set his mug down, missed, and found the surface on the second try. "Funny thing," Ateshao observed. "I've just noticed I'm famished."- 1185 replies

Ateshao blinked. This one didn't strike me as all that religious, everything considered. "Reckon those Fjordell folks are a different sort of trouble," Ateshao answered carefully. "Today, we got the Jesk-scary going all stabby-stabby on people when nobody's watching... But one day, I reckon there'll be armies from the Derethi. Like I said, different sort of trouble, different price. See, later, we're supposed to lose national soverainty, or something like that." Ateshao shrugged. "Pick your poison, I guess," he finished. "If you can," he amended with a tone of soft regret. A moment of silence lingered, until Ateshao grew uncomfortable and broke it. "Anyways, I wonder if this here concoction'll fix mine eyes," he said, swishing about the vial's contents in one hand, holding up a steaming mug of garha in the other. (@A Joe in the Bush I'd happily take input if you have in mind any interesting effects caused by drinking the potion / mixing it with the Sellish equivalent of coffee )- 1185 replies

(not sure if @A Joe in the Bush had more to say on the matter of the potion. I'll follow along this thread for now, but we may need to synchronize things) Ateshao reached in vain after his cart as Arehe-but-also-Sahin dragged him behind. No matter, he shrugged. I'll come back and fetch it later. Any folks what try to steal it'd be daft. He was seated at a table in what looked to be the Aonic equivalent of a bar. "Tell me, what do you think of the Patriarch's murder by the Jeskeri cultists?" Ateshao tensed slightly. Straight to the point, this one is. "Well... How to say. Not really the resolution I expect, but not really unexpected either. I reckon we were all waiting for the other metaphorical shoe to drop, once the Jesk-scary show up 'round Arelon. Something like that, it always has a price, kolo? Like the potions, I s'pose." "I'll just take some brandy thank you." Arehe-Sahin paused, then added looking at Ateshao. "And what about you?" "Hrm. I'll have garha, if you please." he replied, slapping a handful of chips on the table, then sheepishly withdrawing them and placing the proper coinage in their stead. "What about you? What's your take on Kae?"- 1185 replies

"And who might you be?" Arehe-but-also-Sahin asked. "I be Ateshao, at yer service, friend," said Ateshao. "Traveling tinker 'n such. I fix things, buy things, sell things, and the like." He gestured expansively at the wobbling, overfull cart behind him, balanced amidst a scattering of beads and feathers strewn across the roadway. A paper-wrapped parcel slipped from atop the heap of goods, striking the pavement with a heavy metallic clink and putting a crack down the middle of a cobblestone. Fenot seemed to reach a decision about Ateshao's earlier request, and Ateshao turned to face the fellow: "Good sir, I can make a potion to fix your eyes, I am certain, but I need to know everything about them. What is wrong with your eyes? When did they go wrong? Is it both eyes, or just one? How much money are you willing to spend on this?" "Questions, yes, lemme think... Domi, where to start... Everythin' about my eyes... Well, y'see, they're blue, for starters," Ateshao started, widening his eyes and pointing at his iris to demonstrate. "On second thought, maybe a sort of bluish green shade. Yeah, prob'ly that. Some sorts of folks find that sort of thing real important for whatever reason. Ermmm where was I... Oh. Also, my gran' always said yonder left pupil was bigger 'n the right. But I don't reckon that's the problem, do you? Also, my eyes do that thing where you stare at a candle for a bit or something 'long those lines and there's an afterimage. You know what I mean. Anyways! My problem'd be that I can't see very well. Like, I didn't see yonder potions afore, well, afore I did see them, I suppose. My-ope-iah. That's what they call it, I reckon. The doctor-types, I mean. My-ope-iah, you know what that is, friend?" Ateshao paused contemplatively, staring off into the space between Sahin-Arehe and Fenot. "Pretty sure it's both eyes," Ateshao added, screwing one eye shut as if to be sure. "Anyways, I'd be willing to spend two marks, a wyrning and-a-half, four clips, and these here dice. Maybe somethin' else for trade if you can convince me it's worth it."- 1185 replies

Ateshao greeted the important-looking fellow, dusting a light shower of feathers off his coat and tipping an imaginary hat in respect. "'Ello, mister, ahh.... What was your name? Don't think I seen you before, else I really need something to fix these eyes." He spared another glance at Fenot's collection of wares, a handful of painted wooden dice still cupped in one hand. Right, "throwing away" might be an overly strong word choice. It still think it could decidedly hurt one's prospects of becoming Odiv though. Because if the other two converts also claimed, it would narrow the search for the Odiv down to three people (assuming the Gyorn did not choose to delay the swearing of an Odiv in order to convert somebody else, which they would be much more likely to do if the current converts started claiming). Certainly.- 1185 replies

I am not a convert, and if at a later time I become one, I intend to announce it. However, I am warning you that I would absolutely say the same thing if I were a convert. As I understand it, any convert that claims right now is basically throwing away their chances at becoming Odiv. I am aware that some people prefer to play to their current win condition at the expense of possible future win conditions, but others do not prefer to play in that way. I am in the second camp, though I respect the sentiment of the first. Personally, if I were a convert, I would wait to claim until after tonight, assuming I did not get the position as Odiv. If I did not become Odiv, it would imply that either the Gyorn gave somebody else the position, or that they took the time to hand-pick a new convert and swear that person as Odiv. At which point, I would have much more reason to claim, as I would be unlikely to change alignments at that point. I pretty much agree that the village would benefit if all of the converts claimed right now. But realistically, I don't expect any of them to claim until after tonight, and I would not claim yet in their place either.- 1185 replies

Yo Joe, please get back to the doc already, I want to run this post by you (it's attached below for your convenience) before I hit post. "Thirteen you say?" Ateshao exclaimed, laboriously dragging an oversized cart behind him. "Why, that's my lucky number!" "Say, speakin' of random numbers 'n such, if you be the gambling type, I'll match the wager! Fenot, was it? I got just the thing!" He rifled through the boxes perched on the top of his lopsided cart, knocking one of them off and sending a cascade of beads rolling over the unevenly paved road as several frames of abaci splintered. Ateshao uttered a steady stream of colorful curses as he digged deeper in the cart, leaning closer, his legs eventually lifting off the ground as he dove deeper into the cart. "Aha!!" a muffled shout emanated from beneath what vaguely resembled a fishing net full of crystal balls. Ateshao carefully extricated himself from the mess, brushing feathers from his hair as his feet touched the ground. In the other hand, he held out a handful of six wooden dice. Quality things, evenly carved and each a bright splash of color. "Got these off me uncle who got 'em off this shady fellow dressed in a mellow shade of yellow. Dead, you see, so I don't think he missed 'em... But I think they take a shining to you. Seems right that they be yours, at a proper price anyways." Always, if you are game. Ateshao widened his eyes, his expression comically exaggerated. "What's all this? You are a salesman of potions and you never told me?" "Nights, if I didn't see all yonder potions afore, maybe I need a brew for proper eyesight."- 1185 replies

I would be exceedingly glad to have you as co-GM, if you would like to be co-GM. Many thanks.
-
Point. Update: The OOA has been revised. I have also slightly revised the Cthaeh's powers.
-
Really? *parties* I have an MR coming up. I originally planned to run it as a game set in the Roughs, including a small assortment of era 2 metals, allomancers, and ferrings. But I could just as well run this in its place and put off the Roughs game, if there is interest for this one. I'm just a tiny bit more excited about the KKC game, but I'd truly be happy to put on either. Question to the sharders: which would you rather? The important part of the OOA is the bolded parts. The non-bolded entries only matter if actions of the same general type need to be resolved against each other. That said, I do anticipate that this game would greatly benefit from at least one co-GM, yeah.

1a. No confirmations or denials here. I did consciously decide whether or not to create the mechanic you are speculating about, but I had already decided to include this part of the rules regardless. 1b. In accord with the win conditions for Good and Evil, the Cthaeh doesn't really count towards parity. The lovers would need to be the last surviving members of each of their respective factions. 2. No, the magician is a possible role that I ended up scrapping. I forgot to delete it from the actor's list. I thought I fixed that before anybody noticed. Nothing to see here, move along 3. Yup. Exactly so. 4. Yes, it applies to items the same as anything else. Note though that an action failing refers to it being blocked or avoided. If for an example an attack is made and the target survives, the attack was still successfully executed. It just didn't have the desired outcome. 5. It does protect from the lutist/flutist abilities. I consider the lutist/flutist abilities a form of vote weight manipulation, because they alter the impact of votes instead of altering the votes themselves (in constrast with the Scraeling power, which is the only non-secret power that can alter the votes themselves). 6. The order of actions is not locked in place yet. However, right now it is thus: Action Blocks Naming Priest Lodestone Acrobat Action Manipulation Juggler Skindancer Sympathist Singer Vote ManipulationSingerJesterLutistFlutistWine Protects Naming Ruler Scrael Kills Evil Faction Archer Knife Scrael The Lynch Scans Storyteller Lamp Hunter Role Manipulation Tinker / Item Passing Ruler's Grammarie Cinder's Glammourie Actor's Study Child's Inheritance 7. All the yellow and blue roles are confirmed good, yes. Also, note that in addition to the ones you pointed out, Skindancer possession is another power that can fool role-scans.

This game has been crystalizing in the back of my mind for a while now. This started with Straw's "limited god" role idea, Randuir's suggested modification to it, and my intent to turn it into a Cthaeh role. Elbereth understandably said that her KKC game was complex enough as it is, but that this could dwell in a different KKC game, so here we are. I've fleshed things out significantly, and this game is definitely not only about the Cthaeh anymore. It is still in the process of being refined, but I am ready to share draft one. MRXX: A Midsummer Night with No Moon "A clever mortal fears the night without a hint of sweet moonlight. On such a night, each step you take might catch you in the dark moon’s wake, and pull you all unwitting into fae. Where you will have no choice but stay." A troupe of Edema Ruh performers have travelled by night through a forest, and have been caught on a night with no moon. Now, the realms of the Four Corners and Fae are meshed together, and nobody can quite tell one from the other. Time is uncertain, as the forest has remained in a state of evening since the troupe's arrival. Strangers walk among the troupe, clothed in glammourie. Some may be relatively benign, as fae go. Others are quite literally the demons out of folklore. In the distance, there looms a gargantuan tree, lush with dense foliage and brightly colored flowers, wreathed in a warm, welcoming light. Beckoning you to come take refuge in its branches and sustenance from its flowers... Ground Rules Some More Rules Alignments Lovers Role List

What if the game only started out with one or a few planets? (which makes sense after Ruin's rampage last game) That would be one minor incentive to make more. One example of tying planet creation to a win condition: if Ruin's objective was to destroy X planets, then it would be completely fair game to create a planet just for the sake of destroying it (ie, exactly what Ruin was trying to do with Scadrial). Planets would also possibly be worth creating for the sake of private communication, as you say. It might also be said that they might be useful as a means to avoid all but the most powerful of actions. Also. In the last game, each planet offered its inhabitants a unique power. If planets could be created, this couldn't really remain inherent to the planet... So what if, similar to a shard's investment role (and also similar to Khriss' power to invest shards into planets), each shard could bestow certain effects on the planet they are currently situated on? Not sure if this is a good idea in the scope of the game as a whole, but it was fun to examine the different facets of the idea.
