He's a hero, he's just a destination before journey hero.

Asking questions is never bad. It's the only way you can learn. The main things I'd say about your clarified thought is that, 1) Renarin has not had a lot of in depth time yet. His PoV's whenever they may happen will probably show more. 2) The ASD scale can be very steep. In a world at war such as Roshar it would be hard imo to have a more severe case end up being something other than a potential victim, someone who's only purpose is to give a Windrunner someone to save. I don't think that would be good either.

It's different now, than when I was growing up. However I'm not sure it's better, it seems to be that it's just different. It seems to me that it used to be that those with developmental differences used to be "mocked" more, and are now viewed with some amount of fear. I can't decide if there is really anything that changed for the better with that.

Pattern was messing with I believe Abrodadar(might have spelled that wrong) who was confronting Renarin. Relis and Elit were in the main melee.

A few thoughts. First my take on the "blood disorder" was that it was a way of referring to epilepsy. Remember that while surgeon's knowledge of anatomy and drugs on Roshar seems to be pretty advanced, they also don't have advanced testing equipment. Understanding epilepsy beyond a basic level requires our technology. Next up I don't believe Renarin began bonding a spren until fairly recently just like the others. However I do believe he has heard the screams for a while. He's always been uncomfortable having his blade, and unless there is a WoB I don't think it was the reason he froze up when on a plateau run. I think that was a seizure but I also do think he heard the blade. So the question is why did he react better to hearing the blade scream than many others? We have a few peoples reactions. Relis who freaks out and runs out on the duel. Kaladin who gasps and falls backward. Renarin who is deeply troubled by it and has a hard time wielding it but still functions. So why was Renarin less effected? His autism is a likely candidate here. Autism very often has a sensory processing component to it. Some sensations are amplified and some are decreased. Renarin either had less sensitivity to the scream, or was better able to deal with it due to having had to have learned coping skills for similar things just to get thru the day.

Well as to making it on the higher functioning end of the spectrum, it'd be hard if not impossible to write a more severe form and have the character eventual appear in a more heroic setting. Not impossible but imo very difficult. This is not only due to the problems the character would have, but also in creating a connection between him and the neurotypical audience. This is mostly true. The real ways it'd show up would be in social interactions which would still be extremely awkward. In any upcoming PoV from Renarin however the differences may be more noticeable depending on Brandon's understanding of the condition. (I hope he gets it right, and have confidence he will.) Something to add in here. I don't know where everyone is from, but in the US, it's getting important to have some positive portrayals of individuals on the ASD spectrum. In the Newtown and Oregon mass shootings, the individuals were reportedly on the ASD spectrum. Because of this those that don't have any first hand knowledge of ASD have begun to develop a fear of individuals with autism. While the timeline doesn't match up for Brandon to have written Renarin for these reasons, the fact that he exists, and has even touched off this limited discussion is a good thing. You can see a common reaction from Shallan in the books, calling Renarin creepy. As a real life example of this, I live in an apartment building, and oddly enough a family that moved into one of the nearby units also has a son with autism. He was in front of the building playing and being a kid, but because of his autism he was also staring off a lot and it unnerved another resident, who actually called the cops about it. Calling the cops because an eight year old kid made them nervous. So my thoughts and writing here are a little scattered, but I hope that helps illustrate how important it is to have portrayals like Renarin's in more fiction.

Windows here but only because of gaming. Otherwise I'd be using linux. Wine doesn't work well enough all the time, and macs have too much of their price based on their logo.

This is a hard one to define, autism is a spectrum, and so the differences between a nervous tic or habit and a stim is harder to define at the higher end of the spectrum, however on the more severe end, it's easier to define. On the severe end, an individual will be unable to function at all or will take considerably longer to regain function without the stim. On that higher end, I would still be able to function, however my thought process will be slower and perhaps more likely to make mistakes. The nervous tic as you can see is quite similar however I don't think a pencil chewer for instance would start to feel out of sorts if kept from doing it for a moderate duration.

I'm not sure on this, but I thought his different appearances were caused by something like lightweaving.

Odd, one of the listener songs says they can't feed the spren in the same way a radiant does I thought.

But that is a function of the light waves moving out of the bubble. If light wasn't effected you wouldn't be able to see that bluring. The same with the popping noise from the sound waves. edit* I'm not explaining my thoughts well at the moment. I'm going to take a day or two to try figure out how to word my thoughts better into a thought experiment.

But we know that the people do in fact blur. Your vision is based on waves of light and as such light/energy does definitely seem to be effected.

Both are wonderful books, however my vote is WoR as well. Simply because it has more meat to it in some ways since a lot of the introduction and world setup are done.

I'm new to these forums and reading a lot of these slightly older threads, so I wanted to add to this even though it's slightly dated, as the issues of the box and autism are very close to me. My daughter is severely autistic and while I don't have an official diagnosis and will probably never get one as it would be pointless I'm likely on the ASD scale as well at about the same level Renarin appears to be. You have the box exactly right, it's a stim. When he's upset, when somethings bothering him, pulling it out and playing with it however he does allows him to calm his mind. I don't carry anything specific but when I'm upset I'll begin to fidget with something I have, a coin, my house keys, something. There is nothing special about the box other than it's value to Renarin as a way to calm himself.

Time and space are the same thing in someways and they're both influenced by gravity. The edge of a bubble almost has to have a gravity distortion. If you were able to toss a bubble in front and behind a ship it should set up a situation similar to the theoretical warp drive. It would in theory work similar to the Alcubierre drive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive The one problem with this is that radiation inside the ship would be high, so in this situation you'd probably need to have double gold to live thru it.
