  1. Nice surprise indeed and congrats on that! And you've reminded me that I still need to read Rithmatist so I tip my lucky hat in your direction. I have one story, with the pocket companion to Stormlight Archive that Brandon released for Independent Bookstore Day last year. I just happened to go to a participating store on the day (not knowing about the day or the book) and heard an announcement over the store's loudspeaker that any Brandon Sanderson fans should inquire at the counter. Got myself a copy that way.
  2. He's also said that Nightblood is 'orders of magnitude' more powerful than a Shardblade, has mentioned that it goes beyond what they do in destroying its targets in all three realms and in a long analysis of objects compared in terms of 'how hard would this be to push/pull with Allomancy?' he called out Nightblood as the hardest thing to affect and used the expression 'far beyond even a Shardblade'. So while Nightblood is conceptually a Shardblade it's not exactly the same in degree of Investiture or power.
  3. It could be, the primary star is remarked as being bright and if the star chart can be taken as very loosely indicating how close systems are to one another (and I know, we can't assume that with a constellation map) then it would be relatively close to Roshar and stand out even more.
  4. Yeah, it has to be the one Szeth was carrying. Szeth and Taravangian's conversation in the WoR Interlude refers to 'one of the other seven' when the latter lies about an Honorblade being stolen, which explicitly excludes Szeth's and since we know where Taln and Nale's Blades are (or were, for the former) we know that there aren't any more of the things floating around that could have been left behind. At least, not without some serious mental gymnastics that would make Occam's Razor weep.
  5. Yeah, Autonomy has done something to prevent travel to or from Taldain and it seems likely that Khriss wasn't deliberately targeted by this decision but just happened to be offworld when the interdiction began and so she can't go back.

    Atium

We know that duralumin-boosted atium gives you a peek into the Spiritual Realm, or rather a less-limited one than what atium does normally. And there is no 'time' in the Spiritual so that's not anything outstanding from the perspective of this theory.
  7. Hoid: Obvious Khriss: Only appears onscreen twice so far and always in a very obvious way. More subtle mentions of her can be found in the Bands of Mourning broadsheet and as the person Nazh addresses his margin notes to. Nazh: He's the ardent that's seen sketching Bridge Four in WoR, also leaves notes on lots of the art inserts, gets mentioned in the BoM broadsheet twice and appears in person in Secret History. Galladon: Appears in The Way of Kings as 'Grump'. You can tell by the speech pattern. Demoux: Appears with Galladon as 'Thinker'. You can identify him by the scar. Baon: The third of the Purelake trio, as 'Blunt', we only knew this one by Word of Brandon. Aslydin: Married to Demoux, also part of the Seventeenth Shard, very likely to be the Terriswoman worldhopper that Brandon has told us was on Nalthis during Warbreaker. Vasher: Hanging out on Roshar and calling himself Zahel. Can be identified by his color/flower metaphors, having life sense and his general grumpiness. Nightblood: Hello, do you remember my catchphrase about destroying evil? Iyatil and Mraize: The former is known to be from Silverlight but is descended from the Southern Scadrians (thanks to BoM we knew what to go back and look for with her mask), the latter is confirmed to be from Roshar but we know he's been offworld. Felt: You have to keep your eyes peeled to spot him, he's one of the scouts working for the Kholins in WoR. Mi'chelle: From Alloy of Law, confirmed by Brandon to be a worldhopper from Nalthis. She's the newlywed that Hoid is seen talking with. Unknown kandra: Brandon has told us there are kandra worldhoppers but by definition it's kind of hard to know whether or not we've seen them. One of them really needs to be canonically named WalDo. The Ire: Worldhoppers from Sel, seen in Secret History. The Ones Above: Appear in Sixth of the Dusk.
  8. General Discussion is over that way...
  9. Vasher can 'use' Stormlight in the sense that his Divine Breath doesn't really care what kind of Investiture it consumes on a weekly basis so long as it gets enough. Nightblood is similar in that it consumes Investiture without regard for the type. However, Brandon has explicitly stated that Vasher hasn't figured out how to use Stormlight to fuel Awakening and in general we know that while such things are possible they generally require a 'hack' of some form or another. Just because Investiture is sufficiently fungible doesn't mean that you can actually use any given magic system just because you can use another. You still need your spiritweb to be 'wired' for a magic system to actually use it, whether permanently via the process of Initiation or via temporarly changes like a bonded Honorblade, a Southern Scadrian medallion or hemalurgy (more permanent than the others but still reversible). Hoid is a great example of this because he has multiple magic systems at his command and we know he still had to make special efforts. For example, he needed to obtain a lerasium bead in order to give himself Allomancy and while he's attempted to become an Elantrian he failed because he wasn't able to trigger whatever Initiation requirement AonDor has. If he wanted to become a Surgebinder he'd have to bond a spren just like anyone else.
  10. Well, we know that there are lower boundaries of how much you can store of any given attribute and they vary.depending on the attribute (WoB here) so Determination's lower boundary is probably set 'high' enough that you hit it before continual storage becomes self-defeating.
  11. The only WoB's I've seen have said that you'd need duralumin to effectively push a Shardblade, not that you'd also need to be Rashek-level to do so. If a mistborn with duralumin can affect a blade, by definition they must be able to detect it however faintly with steel/iron sight. Is there a newer WoB on the topic than this one which I've missed?
  12. Since we know Shardblades and Plate can be Pushed (even if it's difficult) this setup by definition makes it impossible for a Lightweaver or Truthwatcher to hide from a Mistborn with access to steel or iron because they'll always be able to 'see' those things even if the Radiant has no other metal on them.
  13. Yep. It also comes up directly in the Letter in Words of Radiance where the writer describes Rayse/Odium with the phrase "he bears the weight of God's own divine hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context".
  14. @Extesian Ah! I finally found it.
  15. Given that the Vessels knew one another before they ascended, I'm fairly certain that anyone Rayse considered personally dangerous would be very high up on his hit list, especially since he himself was noted to have been a crafty man by Hoid prior to taking up Odium. Bear in mind that while Honor may have been fourth on his list, by necessary implication Cultivation was fifth and she seems to be all about careful planning, so Rayse gets to kill two birds with one stone when he moves on Roshar. The Stormfather also calls Odium 'the most dangerous of the sixteen'. Lastly, factor in that Hoid (who was also personally acquainted with all the Vessels) clearly sees Odium as the biggest threat right now and that Frost appears to agree with the sentiment and while it's an interesting idea, I think it's reasonable to assume that unless we're explicitly told otherwise we can say that there isn't anything more dangerous to the cosmere as a whole at this time than Odium.
  16. This is gonna bug me until I find whatever it is I saw that put the idea in my head, I just know it... Or until I can't find it and decide I must have imagined it. To the WoBs!
  17. 1) Khriss' notebooks or whatever she uses to record her research 2) A Southern Scadrian medallion with Gold and Chromium (add Copper if I'm allowed one of the rare three-power ones) 3) Wayne's lucky hat
  18. Brandon has said that Forgery could be used to 'fake' Initiation into other systems but it would generally require so much Investiture that it's not at all practical. "Well… there are certain things that you just can’t fake without enough energy that it becomes impractical" "So doing that sort of thing, like rewriting herself even to be an Allomancer, or something like this.... This is possible, but, in order to gain the Investiture she wants to have, she will have to input that much in Investiture, which her current magic system is not capable of doing." He mentions in the second WoB that less ridiculously impractical applications like 'Earn a Shardblade the normal way, give it up and then make a Soulstamp where you still have the Shardblade' would be much easier to accomplish. Elsewhere he specifically points out that Surgebinding is a system you can't cheat your way into because the spren half of the Nahel Bond has to choose you, though that was specifically in the context of trying to do crazy things with gold shadows. He said that other systems would be much easier to 'fake' like getting Breath. EDIT: As for using Forgery on yourself, I suspect that the kind of alteration required to get an effect like 'change who my parents were' to give yourself sDNA you don't already have would be considered far too implausible to ever work because doing so would necessarily require that the you who is creating the Soulstamp, well, not exist. Or you might cause the universe to divide by zero.
  19. Brandon has said that various 'hacks' are possible but they would require specialized knowledge. So yes, it's probably something that could be done somehow, but we have no idea how right now. We know that some systems are easier to get Investiture from; it's why a certain someone is on Roshar for example. I think Brandon also called Taldain out as a planet where Investiture is relatively easy to come by but I can't find it right now.
  20. As far as we know, the only 'normal' way to become a feruchemist is to inherit the sDNA for it. You could approximate it via hemalurgy if you don't mind resembling a pincushion and have the means to get all the spikes. Feruchemy in more limited form can also be granted with the Southern Scadrian's medallions and the Bands of Mourning can give you the full set of powers but both of those are temporary.
  21. Is this the one you're thinking of?
  22. To add a bit more on Szeth's actual name, what that's called is a patronymic; the full name tells you not only who such-and-such is but identifies them specifically as the child of so-and-so as well. So Szeth-son-Neturo is 'Szeth, son of Neturo' but as noted he doesn't call himself that because he doesn't want to shame his father by association. We know this applies to both genders as we have people like Shauka-daughter-Hasweth, one of the scholars that Jasnah asks if Shallan has read. A real-world example of this would be Russian names. For example, the composer Stravinsky's full name is Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, with the middle name being the patronymic meaning 'son of Fyodor'. English is full of them too but nobody really thinks of them any more because they haven't been used that way in a long time.
  23. The question of Stormlight efficiency with a Radiant who is also holding an Honorblade is a bit fuzzy. DroughtBringer remembers asking Brandon this and being told that it would reduce efficiency (in the context of Kaladin with Jezrien's Blade) but in a later post said they weren't 100% positive they were remembering the response accurately So... maybe it reduces overall efficiency. As for the 'magics interfering' thing, as far as we know there's nothing preventing someone from accumulating as many forms of magic as they can get their hands on (case in point: Hoid). What does become a factor is the resonances. Those are the 'perks' you get when multiple systems combine, producing a result that isn't just 'Power A + Power B and the potential applications of them' but something entirely different. We know that once you accumulate too many kinds of magic, they overpower the resonance effect so you just get the sum of all your powers without the extra effects. So at some point a Radiant carrying around Honorblades would probably get too many Surges and lose their resonance. Which could potentially do some pretty weird things to a Windrunner whose resonance involves other people.
  24. Case in point, I recall that someone asked Brandon about the possibility of creating a death ray via Lightweaving and the paraphrased answer was 'Yes, but it would require so much Stormlight as to be completely impractical'. Brandon has generally RAFO'd questions like this (I got my first RAFO for one of them xD) but we do have WoB that someone who was really good with aluminum could cleanse their body of the effects of other Investiture and the Words of Radiance broadsheet carries a story where a Leecher manages to at least temporarily disable what appears to be a Shade-powered gun. Assuming we can take that at face value, these interactions are more or less confirmed to work to at least some extent.
  25. Radiants require Stormlight to use almost all of their abilities other than what their spren could do on their own ('being a Shardblade' included) and their Plate similarly seems to drain light. Mistborn also have resource limitations but each of their powers is idependent so they're much harder to outlast as long as they're clever about using them. Throw in atium which is pretty much an 'I win' button in a duel unless the opponent has a counter to it and some of the more esoteric metals like bendalloy and you have a pretty nasty package. And Brandon has been asked versus questions on occasion and while the parallels aren't always exact, they tend to come down in favor of the mistborn due to a combination of the ones we know having a tendency to be dirty fighters and the Radiants being more constrained in how they can use their powers (ie, when asked about a Vin/Kaladn matchup Brandon gave the win to Vin). Also, while a Shardblade has been noted to be very hard to push on and Plate only somewhat less so, it's not stated to be impossible, even a small nudge at the right moment can be a huge issue and if you're fighting a mistborn they have duralumin so they're going to get at least one shot at such a surprise nudge. That said, most 'who's the strongest' topics revolve around Rashek who also has access to Feruchemy and consequently, compounding. So a 'mere' Mistborn versus a full Radiant is a much closer fight all around, though how close depends on which Order we're talking about (bearing in mind that all mistborn have access to Steelpushing for example, but only Windrunners and Skybreakers have flight) the terrain and a bunch of other factors so we can't give anything approaching a comprehensive answer right now.
