If the light eyes are inherited and investiture is not, then one could have light eyes without investiture. Dalinar is surprised that the person in command at Feverstone is a darkeye. I assume you mean "darkeyes become lighteyes" is a myth rather than vice versa. Post-Recreance, we have Shardbearers, but no surgebinders. If Shardblade use does not make eyes light, how do we end up with a society ruled by lighteyed Shardblade owners who are not surgebinders? I suppose the ex-Radiants could have gone full-Kaladin and taken the Shardblades back, but I think we would have heard about it, and why did they give them up in the first place?

As thread curator, I am obligated to offer you this thread wrt Danlan. Enjoy!

This is a good thought. While my ability to find quotes is failing me, Brandon has said that it is actions that qualify one to become a surgebinder on Roshar, rather than inheritance as in the mistborn world.

Welcome! Upvote for braving the informationstorm! Another reason for the explorer maybe being Eshonai is that Brandon has said she will be a point of view character in a future book. The Parshendi are pretty important to the overall story currently. In her preview reading she talks about exploring twice, where it is not essential to her actions. Rysn doesn't really seem that taken with travel and strange people. She puts up with it for the sake of her ambitions, as I see it, but doesn't love it for it's own sake. Good catch on the Larkin. I agree that it is the same sort of creature. Brandon has said that they have abilities relating to stormlight. The modern fabrials use spren, but the Radiant-era fabrials may not. Apparently the Radiants made the swords, armor, soulcasters and other fabrials, but didn't pass on the secrets of their manufacture.

Yes! They offer Rock the Shards and he refuses because it is beneath him.

Who are the Ghostbloods? (spoilers)
hoser replied to Meandering Monotreme's topic in Stormlight Archive
Welcome also! The voice in Dalinar's visions (Tanavast/Honor?) says in the Starfall vision "to speak of what might be is forbidden". So I think there is a basis for that aspect of Vorinism. It seems likely that it is perverted somehow, but it is hard to tell how. There are two references to Thaidakar. Gavilar guesses him to be behind the assassination and Amaram attributes the Shardbearer attack to Thaidakar. I think the politely uncivil highprince was someone else. -
The Old Magic? That seems very possible. And that could be where his "Curse of Kind" came from! He went to the Nightwatcher to get help cataloguing all of the spren. She gave him something that made him nearly immortal (or whatever phrase meg prefers that means not likely to die of old age for a very long time) and the curse which makes him unlucky so that he doesn't enjoy it too much. /wild baseless speculation

Wow! Thanks! Let's see now: Definite spren interactions: magic fish greatshells (is that what happens when they pupate? they acquire spren?) parshendi Possible spren interactions Shah Aimians Dysian Aimians Larkin What am I missing? Somehow I don't think Ryshadium do

An excellent first next question: The question is, who? An excellent second next question: does the herald who took back his blade still have it? What he said! My candidate for third next question: Did the herald who took back his blade take any others? Do the green upvote arrows ever wear out from overuse?

This touches on something I have been wondering. The Reshi "islands" seem to me to be clearly people. Are the Chasmfiends people? I find it hard to gauge their intelligence and ability to communicate. Now to make a comment to tie this into the thread topic ... trying ... failing.

I am so pleased with the general tone and content of these posts that I refuse to argue any longer. Stepping aside from being right about the past (a failing of mine), I wonder whether part of the issue is the terms we have. We have realmatic and cosmere, but these spren know realms and local Shards. They may know about more worlds and Shards, but we can't really tell. It is easier to type cosmere or realm than, more precisely, realms and local Shards. So our beloved jargon encourages imprecision in addition to the learning curve issues you allude to. That said, I endorse your project and appreciate your persistent efforts to communicate (including helping you overtake zas). FWIW=For What It's Worth These net acronyms can just be googled, FWIW.

Regarding Eshonai's Reading and the Honorblades
hoser replied to Haelbarde's topic in Stormlight Archive
Good catch on the physical resemblance! Nice work on the quotes. Given the following quote from the Eshonai interlude, it seems hard to reconcile. It doesn't seem like they have 9 shardblades left, unless they refuse to use the Honorblades. The Alethi have captured blades from them, and Dalinar didn't seem to think they were different than regular shardblades. Of course, if you are right about the location, they could be on the verge of finding them.- 6 replies

There is a pinned thread at the top that starts with an awesome post created by Windrunner linking various readings. The one you want is called "Rysn's Interlude", but why stop there?

@Shardlet - Well, my objection to Darnam's objection may have been overprotective. I do think that the creator of a post saying a number of things can't always (well, I don't, anyway) get everything exactly right, and is entitled to some impreciseness of expression along the way. I was delighted to hear Darnam's thoughts on the distinction between Realmatic and Cosmeric, as I had not associated Realmatic and realm (yeah, I'm dumb). However, I think there is a greater obligation on the person objecting to a detail to be precisely correct than someone placing a detail in a larger exposition. I am not aware of a canonical definition of Cosmere awareness. The one you offer (cosmere awareness being an awareness not necessarily of worlds beyond the present setting, or even knowledge of a Shard or Shards which are particularly pertinent to the present setting, but more as an awareness of the fact that there are more Shards beyond the one(s) pertinent to your world and that they are/were all part of a greater whole) makes sense as yours and informs your point of view. All good, so far. My point is that as I read the first usage that Darnam apparently objected to, it seemed arguably correct. It's fine for us to have definitions that don't match, but I think posters deserve some slack about word choices in a longer post. We apparently knew what marianmi was trying to say and where a vague term like Cosmere knowledge is concerned, posters should be free of having to match nuances of our individual definitions. To be honest, though, it did bother me that Darnam quoted marianmi twice when he made his objection, but only defended the one usage that seemed more defensible. His post was generally exemplary, however, so I'm stopping now.

With allies like Amaram, who needs ... voidbringers.

Thanks! Upvote!

@Darnam - Thanks for the thoughtful and positively-toned response. Now, if I were to be defensive, (which I would never do, as defensiveness is a bad thing) I would point out that I see you quote marianmi using "cosmere knowledge" twice without differentiating between the two instances. I can see your explanation applying to the second of those instances, but I do not see how it fits for the first, quoted below. The first use you quoted seems to me to be in a list of not particularly realmatic things. While it maybe could have been more specific, I think "Cosmere knowledge" fits better than "realmatically aware". That said, I am overall delighted with you and Shardlet's constructive responses to my challenging post. I feel grateful beyond upvotes (but those too). @meg - thanks. I often don't know why I am being downvoted. Reading what you were reacting to helps me understand that my choice of "go off on" was unnecessarily strong. FWIW, I generally see your posts as questioning and seeking clarity, not informing about what seem to me to be minor distinctions. My generalizing to "people" when I "went off on" Darnam was meant to indict only myself and Darnam (perhaps wrongly in Darnam's case), not you.

I, as always, know nothing. Reading the following excerpts leaves me with none of the certainty you seem to feel: The infection, which has spread up into the leg, is instantly banished. It is not clear to me that growth actually repairs things, rather than accelerating growth processes. Your point could certainly be correct, as the scabbing is different, but it could also be an effect of the amount of time the boy was injured (cognitive realm blah, blah, blah). In any case, my point is that, whatever Ym did with that child, the order with the same surges as Ym may well have been able to do both Growth and Regrowth.
-
Wow, Darnam, that's an amazing distinction that I had not thought of before. Upvote! That said, and understanding that this is a pet peeve that you are unloading, I have some problems with it. I believe educational pedantry can be more positive than the way you delivered it. The spren are shown to know about their mother, presumed to be Cultivation and a male person presumed to be Honor/Tanavast along with their history. They know about the surges and that the Nightwatcher has done something to Lift. To describe the spren as realmatically aware, by your definition, is a significant understatement. The cosmere is a set of worlds (universe?) with magic from the Shards of Adonalsium, at least. The spren may even be aware of other planets in the cosmere. I find marianmi's description of them (cosmere knowledge) to be more accurate than yours (realmatically aware). We pedants should hold ourselves to a higher standards of accuracy than those who are less concerned with distinctions of not-great importance. Upvote to marianmi for bravery in posting in a non-native language around people who will go off on irrelevancies of questionable accuracy. People conflate two terms a lot, and I realize I'm spitting into the wind here, but I wish people would be more exact. To me, "Here Here" is a common misspelling of "Hear, hear" that ... Oops, never mind. Hoist by my own petard.

Nicely done! Upvote! This puts the information we have together in a very interesting way. The two orders we know have 3 described abilities, and each order is supposed to have something special to it. I struggle with some aspects of the theory In each case, two of the uses seem exclusively relating to one aspect. It seems possible that the basic and reverse lashings will be shared between the windrunners and skybreakers. Ym and Lift's orders could both do growth and regrowth. There are hints that the windrunner special ability may involve stormriding. Kaladin has done some things (pressure wave?, voice amplification) that don't fit in the three lashings. We have seen only 1 book. I think Brandon will give orders more abilities.

I guess it's possible, as dj says. The differences we know between Shardblades (presumed former radiantblades and Szethblades) and Honorblades: greater power (as dj said), but we don't know how they are more powerful when bearer dies Honorblades are supposed to disappear, whereas Radiantblades appear Taln has dark eyes when carrying his presumed Honorblade, whereas Radiantblades supposedly lighten ones eyes permanently and the Szethblade lightens his eyes temporarily The history of the king's blade is presumably well known. I guess it comes down to what you believe the differences are and whether you believe that the differences would have been noticed.

Yes! And Jasnah can write about Galivar's travels. At least it doesn't change it to Gilligan, lest we never get anywhere.
-
Certainly seems reasonable. Additional or alternative reasons could have to do with Nohadon having conquered the world (time of the sword) and the Radiants wanting to keep an eye on the most effective military society and isolate the poisonous effects of violence to a single country. The Radiants make it a logical place for Taln to go if he doesn't know they are disbanded. For all we know, he went to Urithiru first.

Based on the following interaction, I feel certain that we will see more of his parents. Goodreads WoK Fantasy Book Club Q&A with Brandon Sanderson (Verbatim) There are so many juicy things that Brandon can do...

@marianmi - yes, I know that part of what you were questioning was that Lift could "create" investiture. I did not want to be in the position of interpreting your writings. The other issue for me is that while I agree with your "closed system" concept and think it is similar to what I was trying to express with "conservation of investiture", you seemed very certain about the mechanism. I believe that she is getting investiture from somewhere, but have only speculations about how it works. Shardlet made the point that there wasn't really time for digesting a roll to fat and then using the fat to transfer stormlight. In this respect, I see a reasonable point. There may be such a mechanism, but I see the need for an additional pathway for Lift to access investiture quckly from food if we are to explain the interlude in question.
