  1. I would argue that the purpose of Shardblades is to kill spren. Thunderclasts are spren animating stone, I think. If spren are things, Jasnah says: So I think Shardblades sever their souls as well.
  2. The voice in Dalinar's vision says: "To speak of what might be is forbidden." The first, shared Radiant ideal is also about not letting the future control the present. I'm sure Vorinism misinterpreted it somehow, but I think there must be something to it also. Edit: moar conciser
  3. I wonder whether it would help to have a "none of the above" option. I think the division surge can be used to destroy things as it is shared w/the Skybreakersand it could be used to turn things to dust. Kalak looked at smoldering rock and mused that the Dustbringers had done their work well. They could be trainees. Could there be a fabrial that would let regular soldiers infuse?
  4. Yes! And to add irony to the blasphemy, it is a few paragraphs after she thinks:
  5. Welcome! Your concern about doing things right is appreciated. One thing you can do is add the word spoilers to the title. If you edit the post, then go to "full editor" you can change the title.
  6. On it. The idea horrifies me too, but downvotes horrify me too.
  7. Shallan can see Ivory unless he decides to be shadowy and Jasnah can see Shallan's cryptic. Nobody else can see Wyndle. Will they be able to see Syl? I guess Wyndle talks about that. "Ivory" is black. In the Nohadon vision, they speak dawnchant. In the Purelake vision ancient Selay. Maybe the Radiant era was long and included the change from dawnchant to other languages. There's a Form for that .
  8. I assume that only the one that bonds has an anchor on the other side. Without the anchor, they might go totally mindless. Or maybe it is such a brave thing to do that finding even one to do it is rare. The bond seems to be one-one. I have no idea how the spren decide which is to bond whom. If crossing over is a betrayal, the others leave or the spren police chase them away.
  9. I think the first five will be fending off this crisis. The next five will be taking the fight to Odium, rebuilding Honor somehow and creating a more stable situation for the people of Roshar.
  10. I still don't see Szeth as the writer: Poor writing - he is extremely literate Why warn Dalinar - we know his orders and how well he executes them Why wait 62 days to strike? Mr. T says "It must be done quickly"
  11. Given the epigraphs, it seems to relate to the Parshendi, as Navani is tying them together in retrospect. Presumably Odium could put Dalinar to sleep and write some glyphs, but why would he warn Dalinar and why would he write poorly? Assuming it is not someone coming in the window or through the walls, it is a member of Dalinar's household.
  12. Chapter 3 icon - I assume Shallash - fits Shallan Chapter 4 icon - Ishar? - for visions from the spiritual realm, Navani, Dalinar, Glyphwriter as future order 10 knights? I think Navani might be likeliest. Chapter 5 icon Chach - Moash as future order 3 knight? The fire and the bravery fits. In tWoK Kaladin struggled over leading and Dalinar struggled over resoluteness. If Moash were to become an order 3 knight, his struggle would be over obedience.
  13. Normal soldiers slightly invested? This is new. Another candidate ability for the final surge?
  14. This seems like a possibility that fits with the chapter heading quotes from Navani's journal. Chapter 4 epigraph anyone?
  15. All effective leadership. His plan is to become leader by default and build "Very, very strong walls." Jah Kaved was stable, Alethi leadership is becoming stronger, the Azish had stable government and the Selay seemed stable even if we don't like the way the succession is secured. When he steps into the vacuum he is creating, there will be no deviating from his twisted plans.
  16. Except Syl is an honorspren and reacts around natural forces: gravity and pressure, she is supposed to be related to windspren. The cryptics seem to be about mental things (cognitive?). I think there is more here that S&J will be learning along with us.
  17. Nice! How did you get the floor of your attic invested? They'd slice through mine in no time. I'd keep them in the basement. I think it would be cheaper to refrigerate them in the basement too .
  18. Woah! Brilliant! I don't want it to be true. I want Cultivation to be about weeding and letting the healthiest plants survive. Mr. T is destroying the healthiest plants in favor of a parasite.
  19. Sadeas POV! {Wild Speculation}Shallan's spren has crossed over, but didn't have help from the other cryptics. It is cognitively impaired, at least for a while. By drawing it she helped reestablish the connection. {/Wild Speculation} Kaladin taking part in the king's council. Will Adolin duel Amaram? Doesn't seem right politically. Something made Dalinar fall asleep, then left a message. I don't think a spren could actually write the message. Renarin's spren helped Dalinar sleep, then Renarin wrote the message? Just a wild idea, doesn't seem likely.
  20. Peter corrected it afterward. Really, if I had to interact with as many people as Brandon does on tour, I wouldn't be able to tell up from down. The latest chart I know about is here.
  21. Dalinar did hear the virtual screaming at the Recreance vision. Abandoning the weapons to people who used them on each other seems pretty incompatible with the Windrunner oaths that we've seen. They had seemingly tightly controlled the Shards up to that point. I think they did abandon the oaths at the Recreance. I think they did have a plan, but it could still have hurt the spren. That said, forcibly breaking the Parshmen from their spren seems like it could have been a betrayal too. I hesitate to assume it's that, because I don't understand what really happened. @Doc: I assume you mean Phantom Monstrosity when you say Hobbes. I checked his profile. He hasn't posted since July and hasn't been on since October. He achieved the 10th highest reputation in 6 months of postings. And really, all he (or she) had going was brilliance, humor, conciseness and effective use of quotes .
  22. There is a hide link at the bottom of my posts. I don't know if it works for OPs, but you might want to try it if you haven't already. Might as well minimize the admin's burdens if we can.
  23. About the safehand. There is word of Brandon that the tradition originated with something else, so presumably this window was rendered or copied after that to not be obscene (children might see it, ya know). Interview: Dec, 2010 Goodreads WoK Fantasy Book Club Q&A with Brandon Sanderson (Verbatim) JonMy burning question for Brandon is did I miss the explanation, world building moment or historical gem that explains why women have a safe hand and why they must keep it covered? Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads) No, you haven't missed it. People have asked about this. There will be more explanation in-world as it comes along, but it's for much the same reason that in some cultures in our world you don't show people the bottoms of your feet, and in other cultures showing the top of your head is offensive. It's part of what has grown out of the Vorin culture, and there are reasons for it. One of them has to do with a famous book written by an artist who claimed that true feminine pursuits and arts were those that could be performed with one hand, while masculine arts were those performed with two hands, in a way associating delicacy with women and brute force with men. Some people in Roshar disagree with this idea, but the custom has grown out of that foundational work on masculine and feminine arts. That's where that came from. One aspect of this is that women began to paint one-handed and do things one-handed in upper, higher society. You'll notice that the lower classes don't pay a lot of attention to it—they'll just wear a glove. As a student of human nature and of anthropology, it fascinates me how some cultures create one thing as being taboo whereas in another culture, the same thing can be very much not taboo. It's just what we do as people. There's more to it than that, but that will stand for now.
  24. I fixed it for you. Who knew. Strikethrough double "t" makes a weird hashmark.
  25. Cenn died 5 years after Gavilar, so the rattles started about 6 years before Cenn's death. Kaladin volunteered 5 years before tWoK non-flashback events, so the death rattles started a year before that. How long before killing Gavilar did Szeth do what he was made Truthless for? Do we have any other triggers synchronous with the death rattles starting?
