AHHHHHHHHHHH So, thoughts: Kaladin seeing Amaram... lkhl;h;lg; "They have surgebinders" "It could have been an honorblade" well some theorists will be very happy with that. And spren stuff, they see them coming instead of just appearing so maybe they are like Rock? Adolin talking to his sword, hmm... Adolin and the Thrill... Now I'm worrying.

I don't think that would work because the Era of Solitude is the current Roshar era. That didn't change (or at least I don't think it did, Kabsal refers to the modern era as the Era of Solitude at least) it's just that in the East at least they stopped using the EoS calender.

So, as probably many of you are doing, I'm rereading Way of Kings. As I read there are some cool, to me at least, things that I noticed based on new knowledge from Words of Radiance. This is from Chapter 4 of WoK. We know now that Syl is, very probably, the only honorspren in the physical realm and although at this point she doesn't remember it I think she almost does. I'm reading her as being confused, but in a kind of instinctual way. She doesn't know what she is, just that she probably isn't a windspren. (That sounded cooler and made more sense in my head...) Another cool thing is in Shallan's description of the letter she leaves Jasnah, in order to get her to reconsider her taking Shallan on as a ward: I kind of squeed at that. If we didn't know that she had already come to the attention of the Cryptics, I bet that would have brought them running. (and by the way I just love the "true lie" thing)

Theory about Identity and interactions with allomancy

Yes, thank you. It seems I was misremembering it. (Although I thought the thing about the Lord Ruler putting the Flaw in was in the HoA annotations)- 9 replies

Theory about Identity and interactions with allomancy
WeiryWriter replied to Goatborn's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm pretty sure I read it in the Annotations. Unfortunately there isn't a good way to search them at this time. I don't know when I'll be able to reread them so I can find it. (Though I'm probably due for a reread soon anyway.)- 9 replies

I think I remember reading something about how the seasons are determined by highstorm activity and not the axial tilt on Roshar.

Theory about Identity and interactions with allomancy
WeiryWriter replied to Goatborn's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Umm... Ruin didn't deliberately build anything into hemalurgy. Neither Ruin or Preservation actively "designed" the metallic arts. Magic systems come into existance when a Shard invests in a world but they are based on the interactions of the shards invested in the shardworld and the shardworld itself. Shards have the ability to fudge with the rules, but only to alter what already exists (as Preservation did with the external temporals and the mistsickness). The "Flaw" that allows allomancers to control hemalurgic constructs was ostensibly Rashek's idea. He wanted a way to control the creatures he designed while he was Ascended. Granted Ruin was whispering in his mind at that time so it is fairly likely Ruin influenced him in that decision. (Really, really likely. Ruin would have also wanted a way to exert control over them)- 9 replies

Nice theory. Unfortunately we have a WoB disproves it. (source)

Shallan can draw the Cryptics because she has a "special connection" to them. I take this to mean she cannot usually draw invisible/hidden spren. Also keep in mind that those Cryptics probably weren't actually manifesting in the Physical Realm at that point. (source)

Relationship Sections on Character articles
WeiryWriter replied to WeiryWriter's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
Umm... Let's see. (Be warned I don't actually know if what follows will actually be intelligible) You are right in say "it is more than Vin is married to Elend". It's also about how the relationship grows and changes. Where it started and other important events. It's also the effect the relationship has on the individuals. Vin's relationship with Kelsier helps her to accept her nature as a mistborn, for example. How does this relationship relate to the culture they are living in? You are right in saying that people have different interpretations on things and we would have to keep a careful eye on things so they don't get out hand. However I think if we keep to the core of the relationships we can't really go wrong? That probably makes no sense... It's a good question, I'm just bad at answering it. -
Keep in mind that her father was a Tekiel, and so had a pretty pure line. But yah, its weird.

Weiry glanced down at the milling throng below him. He must have fallen asleep, he didn't remember there being quite so many people. How many more people are gunna show up? Modeft surely doesn't expect all these people to work together? Weiry had to admit however that Modeft was a bit of a mad genius, or at least he thought he was. It wasn't really his concern though. Weiry was the watcher on the walls, or in this case the rafters, and his job was to do just that. Watch. Not just for the lawmen, and the dreaded Steel Inquisitors, but the thieves as well... Who knows when they might have someone who would try to double-cross them. And in a crew this size it was more likely than not.

I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing it. The only post by Peter that I see is the one confirming the 1.1 earth years to 1 rosharan year.

As for why Alloy-era allomancers are so weak. If I remember correctly part of it has to do with Spook being the only mistborn to survive, and he was a reduced-strength mistborn, like most of the late Final Empire mistborn. Whether or not a person is a misting or a mistborn is a gene in their sDNA but their strength has to do with the amount of preservation in their innate investiture. If two lerasium mistborn had children I would expect for their to be no reduction of strength. In keep in mind though that this isn't what happened in the Final Empire. There were only 9 original mistborn, they would have had to procreate with people with lower amounts of preservation, leading to the reduction in strength. Personally, I don't see why non-scadrian metals wouldn't work for the metallic arts. It is the shape of the metals that provide a link to preservation's power, by way of a person's innate investiture. (that probably makes no sense, but it did in my head) Basically, the metals are not providing the power, they just flavor it.

I just question its use because it is not an in-universe thing, it is wholly something that readers have started using. I just don't like using something that just feels wrong (in my opinion). I doubt "Era of Solitude" will end up being the name of the calender, because if it were it would be dated from the beginning of the Era and not a point some 3,400 years after. That just isn't how calenders work. And I admit, I misread the post you linked as your source, I thought you were referring to it postulating the arrival of Taln is on the 1000th day, and not the Kaladin chasm leap. That is why I phrased my post as I did. That said, I think the use of "Betabanes" is even more unlikely to be correct. The dates of the epigraphs are out of sync with the events of the chapters, and do not "date" them. I guess it could be argued that the dying person could be seeing Kaladin as he is doing it but except for the "1000 days" death rattle the rattles are out-of-sync with current events. (oh and by the way it is "Jes" not "Jez")

I think the only currently-Exemplary Stormlight article that hasn't been claimed is Torol Sadeas. Does that pique your interest Aether?

Yes, it is the time period they are in, but it is inaccurate to say 1173 EoS because that implies its the 1173rd year of the Era of Solitude. That is how calenders work. I don't know what it should be called because we don't know what the calender is dated from. The letters after a date 1173 EoS, 2014 AD serve to indicate what calender the dates are a part of. The "Era of Solitude" is not a calender. It is an era, like the Modern Era, or the Medieval period, or the classical period. For example the AD/BC split in our history is part of the Julian/Gregorian Calender. Another calender, such as the French Revolutionary Calender would be dated from something else.

I'd just like to chime in with my perpetual doubts as to the accuracy of the Shadesmar map. We have this WoB: (source) Personally, I think it strains credulity that the Cognitive landscape of Roshar would so closely mirror the Physical one. That said, I like the rest. Not enough to espouse, but it's certainly interesting.

I think I would prefer ES over EoS, personally I think it looks better. (And I'm not exactly a fan of its usage on the wiki, mostly because it doesn't fit. That calender isn't dated from the beginning of the Era of Solitude) I also don't think it would be that confusing because dates are generally written Jeseses 1174, with the date preceding the year, adding ES to the end makes sense. Also "-es" meaning one is only when its used as a suffix. As a distinct word "one" is "Jes". Also, if we are going with the idea that Taln arrives on the 1000th day after the "the Everstorm comes in but a thousand days" death rattle then it would be Shashahes 1173 not Betabanes 1173.

I think I remember reading something in Alloy (or maybe it was the broadsheet?) about a politician whose platform was "I'm a smoker, so I'm immune to emotional allomancy, vote for me!"

A Stylistic Question: Present or Past tense?
WeiryWriter replied to FeatherWriter's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
Aww, how cute, you think we have a protocol... Personally I would check it, but it really doesn't matter whether you do or not. It's kind of up to the editor's discretion. I don't always do so, even when I should. Generally if I'm not adding content, I think it is a minor edit. -
This looks great! And yah, I totally place Spren and fabrial stuff in a state of eternal dibs. I'm thinking on whether I want to do any others, Surgebinding maybe? I've been thinking about working on it for a while, but I've been putting it off until after WoR...

Eh, I'm wary of having multiple threads and such. I don't think we should clutter up the forum. Perhaps just have the Day/Night # in bold at the beginning of your post?
