Yeah, over time, I don't like this chapter. More neurotic behaviour by Shallan and Kaladin. Gone are the days when Shallan sketched and Kaladin trained. It would be interesting to see from a story perspective how they break out of the funk.

If Craig Alanson wrote Stormlight, it would start off as a trilogy but quickly spin out into 10+ books with no end in sight. Everyone would hate it but still keep buying it hoping for an end. The books would be complete rubbish where most of the screen time be spent on silly jokes, doing nothing and war gaming of little side quests.

PS Did anyone get the same feel as the Brightness Radiant chapter in OB? Seems a very similar structure with the story. Although 18 chapters vs 32 chapters in OB part 1?

Teft's spren and Lopen's spren Nako seemed to have very different personalities at the end of OB. The captain of the Honor spren ship also had a very different personality.

Not sure exactly what you meant by this but in my opinion more representation of mental health issues in media is a good thing if it is done well. What I mean is that some people (including myself) are tired of the whole DID thing for Shallan taking up screen time. We are hoping for some progression with more oaths as hinted at the end of OB. To be clear, I am comfortable with Shallan having DID or anyone else having DID. It’s more about a wanting progression in the book. Pretty sure some shard casts even talk about this issue.

I am always surprised with re-reads and I see all these nuggets that I seem to have missed last time. Just finishing OB reread, and I feel like I just blasted past the Part 5 previously. Everything is registering now for the first time. It feels like I read it earlier like a brain dead zombie!! What’s your re-reading experience like?

This is an intriguing thing that nobody wanted but it has had increasing screen time. Interesting that Brandon changed chapter 7 after specific feedback re DID from the Alpha readers. Is the non-cosmere leaking in to the Cosmere? Stephen Leeds from Legion is now Shallan!!!

I am going through the re-reads and it made me think whether their was another shard there? Honor, Cultivation and ???. The Broken One is Odium. Another way is it was Honor, Cultivation and Odium and Honor is the Broken One. no idea which is true though.

What about the moon?

I don't know if it's going to happen or not, but that is a sizzling theory.

I was thinking something more mundane like a blade clamped flat sheath. The sharp edge would not touch the sheath that way.

In WoR, with training with shardblades, the ardent had some special blade blocks that stopped the blade from hurting..

It feels heavily foreshadowed, doesn’t it? From Shallan’s paintings and the end of book 1 in OB. I think there will be twist in the tale somewhere though. BS occasionally uses a bait and switch strategy, eg you think it’s there but it’s somewhere else. In this case, Navani may need to find a particular fabrial, like a key? The other thing is on this particular one - has the description on Amazon changed from last year? I thought it was about Odium stopping the radiant from figuring out the secrets of the tower. In the current blurb, that bit is gone and now it is more obscure.

As the title says, just post all your theories here - so that you can come and gloat here later or have a laugh at yourself. Mine have been:- - Book 5 prologue is Gavilar (posted this after WoR came out). - After reading tWoK I thought Rysn was a willshaper. Just thought her trying to get Reshi to trade was pretty forceful - so willshaper it is. It doesn't look likely, but I haven't been proven wrong yet - Kaladin at the final path would be able to lock up people in shardplates. So, in a crazy battle in book 5, he can stop Leshwi or someone else in a shardplate cell. - Jasnah’s flashbacks in book 10, would involve a lot scenes that she didn’t have in the books from the first arc. Somehow, I feel that Jasnah knows about Shallan and the Ghostbloods. This is my shakiest theory as it is purely based on a gut feel. - RoW is going to be about capturing Dawnshards. This is based on the description of an arms war on the outside cover. I thought it would be about a hoard of shard blades in the caves under Aimia. But now, Dawnshards make more sense. - Somehow I think Adolin is going to die maybe in RoW. But with Brandon’s resurrection trope, who knows. Adolin gives me the Ellend vibe, if you know what I mean. - This is not a prediction, but a scene I wish to see - Pattern reading the diagram and going all nuts. - everyone is now already thinking Navani to bond with Sibling given the released prologue and chapters up to 7. - Somehow the “main” characters will become the new heralds for some, eg Dalinar replaces Ishar. Ash and Taln though stay as Heralds as they have books in the back 5. What are your theories that you haven’t had to voice anywhere else. Put them down here so you can come back and have a laugh or have the glory!

So, there was a whole book covering that year that wasn't written We just got the ending in recollection.

I think OB should have had a time skip longer than it did. The quick return meant that a lot of things took up screen time. As a result BS had less screen time for things in the remaining two books. Hence the long jump. The longer the jump between OB and RoW, the smaller is the time skip between RoW and book 5. It's just a mechanical calculation of how it would work. As book 5 was outlined at the same time as book 4, I am guessing a pretty small jump there to maintain continuity.

I think we'll find out by SA5. Have been betting on (since WoR) that Gavilar will have the prologue for Book 5. Obviously, that's a guess and it can stretch out to beyond book 10 in a separate novella.
