Note: Someone else probably thought of this first. If so, tell me and I'll remove this thread. Taravangian's diagram is flawed, both in concept and execution. Exhibit A - The Diagram's Basis Taravangian states that his compassion and intelligence act in direct conflict. When he is intelligent, he is cold and calculating. When he is compassionate, he is a complete idiot. He cannot have them both simultaneously This is a bigger problem than we realize, because compassion is necessary when dealing with other people; Taravangian once drafted a law on one of his more intelligent days that required people with below average intelligence to commit suicide for the good of the city; he had been 'convinced that, if they listened to his arguments, they would see reason and die for the good of the city' Exhibit B - The Diagram's Intent The diagram is meant to make Taravangian king of Roshar, so he can have the world united to face the Everstorm. There are two problems with that goal The less severe problem is that Taravangian inspires anarchy. For example. no one in Azir wanted to become Prime; what if the people got used to having no rulers? Would they just roll over and beg for dog food when Taravangian came? Or would they splinter into anarchy when they realized that any leader they had would last no more than a month before getting assassinated? And the more severe problem is a matter of timing - the Everstorm is already here. Taravangian's diagram has already failed; he rules just two nations, and his control over the second - Jah Keved - is fragile Exhibit C - The Diagram's Failures As seen in Exhibit B, the diagram failed in uniting the world quickly enough But the biggest problem is related to Exhibit A; Taravangian could not accurately predict people. He could probably tell you what angle to fire a crossbow from the highest parapet of Kharbranth to have a Highstorm striking at that exact moment to carry it across the ocean and hit a Whitespine in Aimia, but he couldn't predict how people would react We've already seen one example of this failure - the diagram predicted six factions warring over Jah Keved, while in actuality there were seven. If we assume for chaos theory, a small slip like this could break the diagram In conclusion, Taravangian's diagram has done nothing but bring pain, without a hope of success.

Funniest Scenes in Stormlight Archive (so far)
Adamir replied to Tetriona's topic in Stormlight Archive
Literally everything, and I mean everything, to do with Syl. Here's a cropped example. Syl: You realize you almost killed me, right? Kaladin: Sorry. And... you are intelligent and articulate? Syl: Compliment, please? Kaladin: But I - Syl: Gave a simple statement of fact. Kaladin: Fine, you're wonderful in every conceivable way. Syl: Also a fact; but I'll let that slide if you give me a sufficiently sincere smile. -
You're going to all hate me for saying this, but before his betrayal, I thought Sadeas was the most complex and well-rounded character present, and a clear favorite. To me, Sanderson should have thought of some other way to raise the stakes; but I'll admit that only the unexpected betrayal has any impact.

WoK scene - now with 100% more ambient soundtrack!
Adamir replied to XenosHg's topic in Stormlight Archive
My brother is addicted to listening to Hans Zimmer music (think of the most dramatic ambiance you could comprehend; I think he did some for Pirates of the Caribbean), and it was blaring around the house as I read Kaladin fighting Szeth. Every writer should add a 'suggested background music' note directly underneath chapter headings; otherwise, events like this rely entirely on coincidence. -
It is impossible to comprehend just how much I want this to happen,,, Wait a moment,,, Shadows of self... Cognitive shadows... (Self-explanatory) Echoes of what someone did in life... (Kelsier seeing what his religion turned into) An echo of someone... (how Vin described OreSeur wearing Kelsier's corpse) Kelsier lives confirmed! Okay, that may be pushing the evidence a bit. Now back to my actual opinion on this theory. Wantwantwantwantwantwantwantwantwantwant!!!!!!!!!!

My brain short-circuited halfway through the mathematics... I doubt even Sanderson put this much thought and calculation into his population figures.

One Question To Ask Anyone In The Past (Game)
Adamir replied to Surgebound Rainspren's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Hey Gavrilo Princip, how about you go eat your sandwich in that other restaurant you really liked? To provide context, Gavrilo Princip was one of the assassins trying to kill Franz Ferdinand, and the only one who succeeded - entirely because Ferdinand's driver took a wrong turn and parked right in front of Gavrilo while checking the map. If he had decided not to try to cheer himself up for an earlier failed assassination attempt on Franz by eating a sandwich at his favorite restaurant, then we wouldn't have had World War 1.- 18 replies

Champion of the God of Lies, -No idea whatsoever Seeing by light unshone, -Stormlight? Marked by the light too bright, -Stormlight again? Yes, I am unoriginal Fighting those that I am most alike, - Kaladin finds more honor in how the Parshendi fight compared to Sadeas's men? To guard my former enemies. -Windrunner? I will protect even those I hate With might in hands and all the world on sight, I will bring the punishment, of metal and light, -Metal and light... That narrows things down to either the entire Mistborn trilogy or the entire Stormlight Archive... I didn't say it was narrowed down much. Marked by sword, marked by the fire, -Shash? Serving the God of Lies. -No idea whatsoever, again Basically, while I'm probably completely wrong, I will state it to be Kaladin.

Otherwise known as the minimum-effort cosplay; don't bother wearing anything smart, and carry a stack of books with you. Wait, I just realized something - I've been cosplaying Elend my entire life!
-
That's because I removed the action, as I had gone an action over the limit. As it was mostly just talking to other House Lords over a doc, there wasn't really anything I actually did other than plan. On another note, how do I commit an action without it becoming public knowledge (for example, I wouldn't want anyone to find the body - wait, did I just say that in the public section of the forum?)? And does communicating with other players (such as arranging trades) count as an action?

Theory: Dalinar's Boon Was To Forget (Warning: Baseless Speculation)
Adamir replied to Adamir's topic in Stormlight Archive
That was my original theory - that Dalinar had asked to forget his wife. -
Any materials needed... hmm... Does that mean I could cosplay Elend and summon a bead of actual lerasium? Or Adolin with an actual set of Blade and Plate? All ridiculousness aside, I have to go with Breeze.
-
In that case, could my first action be considered pointless, as I didn't actually gain anything from it? To stay within the limit, I'm removing the action where I went and spoke to Lords Erikell and Walin, as most of that was done through google docs.

Who are you buying them through, though? Not to expose any conspiracies, but I have spent the last hour arranging bulk purchases of metals from another player for myself to refine. As far as I know, I am the only person currently making high-quality refined metals.

[Theory] Duat = Shadesmar/Cognitive Realm
Adamir replied to Shard of Adonalsium's topic in Stormlight Archive
The chances of this being canon are one in infinity, but I have to upvote fan rants - even though I've never read the Kane Chronicles. -
The city around Kredik Shaw had never been exceptionally populous; before the Deepness, there had been just under ten thousand citizens. Now, two thousand remained, a skeleton of what once was. Most businesses that weren't geared towards food production and other necessities had shut down in necessity; pity, that would make Mennet's plan that much harder. What he needed was to find out which buildings were once inhabited by smiths and metallurgists. Many of them were abandoned, and the people who lived in the others rarely carried on the trade. It shouldn't be too difficult to buy up those buildings. Who? - Mennet is performing the action, in his capacity as House Lord What? - Mennet is buying up different smithies and refineries Where? - In Luthadel When? - This is my third action for the turn Why? - Details in the doc

Theory: Dalinar's Boon Was To Forget (Warning: Baseless Speculation)

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Adamir replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, but if that is your boon request... then what can I give you for a bane? Well, something balanced... The last ten pages of every copy you will ever hold of Stormlight 10 will suffer spontaneous combustion. Then again, I would consider that torture - but would that apply to e-books? If the last ten pages catch fire, does that mean the screen catches fire? Or the hardware? For a more balanced bane, we'll assume it doesn't apply to e-books; but this means you can only read Stormlight 10 as an e-book, since ten pages catching fire would make the entire book light up. I wish to become a Mistborn Feruchemist. Of course, that can never go wrong... That is a challenge, next person, find a bane that fits with the boon, and that actually outweighs it. Scrolling up, I noticed 'you will always feel like sneezing', so thank god the most evil option has already been used. -
While it doesn't always happen, most Nightwatcher curses are in some way related to the boon. So that got me thinking; when did Dalinar visit the Nightwatcher? My theory is that Dalinar, broken by the guilt of being drunk and useless when Gavilar was assassinated, visited the Nightwatcher and asked for those memories to be removed. The Nightwatcher complied. Evidence Dalinar never has direct memories of that night, all he knows about it is what other people tell him. It could be considered an appropriate curse for Dalinar to forget his wife's name; a bad memory removed, but a good memory goes with it.

To make it easier for other players, I'll add my character name to the start of each of my posts; just a suggestion, not trying to exert authority over other peoples' posts, but it would be more convenient to not have to scroll all the way back up to the start of Page 1 and go through the name list to remember who you are. Also, note that I will mention certain modern weaponry that doesn't come into play until the Wax and Wayne series; as stated in the original topic, WoB has pointed out that the pre-Ascension society was close to achieving railroads. Note that the following is two actions, taken one after the other. Mennet Farrsolin Mennet held the two pellets in his hand, remnants from his family's distasteful work. One was a bullet with an alloy of ninety two per-cent steel and eight per-cent carbon. The other was half as carbonated, but the visible difference was completely non-existent. If he hadn't found them in labeled containers, he would have thought them identical. This gift was... it was extraordinary, simply unbelievable. It was like a gift from Terr himself - but as Rashek said, Terr was dead. Mennet had to keep reminding himself that, over and over again. These were the two most pure steel alloys he could find. Since the Deepness, most metallurgists and smithies had given up their trades in favor of what could actually help them survive. Mennet would have to remedy that; if the alliance came through, he would have all the metal he wanted to refine and sell. But for now... For now, he had four hundred bullets for his steel. With iron, there was no one good source, just a thousand bad ones; sharp nails that would leave him dead of internal bleeding. Goblets that would have to be melted down and re-forged into smaller pieces. Gun barrels with the same problem. Steel and tin were the only two metals he had in good amounts. Mennet reminded himself what he was trying to do. Sighing, he swallowed the first pellet, and felt power filter into his bones. He let it rest for a moment, gently prodding at it to watch thin blue lines sprout from his chest. Finally, Mennet tossed a pouch of tin half-mark coins into the air, and Pushed against it. They were useless to him; the half-marks had thirty per-cent silver, and were almost fatal to burn. This was a promising alloy; four millimeter rounds seemed to work. Mennet swallowed the other bullet. The lines flickered when he reached for them, as if trying to maintain a hold on reality. Mennet pushed against the coin pouch again, sliding it a few feet further across the floor. A spike of nausea stabbed through his stomach, and Mennet cut off the burn. hunching over and trying to keep from throwing up. The five millimeter rounds had too much carbon, leading to an impure alloy, he concluded. Mennet sighed, then took out six small pills filled with powdered brass. He was playing a game of chance with the worst possible odds; five in six that he would be un-eating his lunch. Two hours later, Mennet considered just how lucky he had been in finding the right alloy on his first attempt. And how stupid he had been - brave, he considered, but still stupid - to hope that one of the other alloys might work even better. This was a gift that needed to be preserved through the generations; he needed a child to inherit the power. Who? - Mennet is performing the action What? - Mennet is first testing Allomantic alloys (examine the doc for the alliance-which-must-not-be-spoken-of-in-the-public-section-of-the-roleplay) for his eventual plan (detailed in that doc), then Trying for an Heir Where? - In his keep, in Luthadel When? - These are my first and second actions for the turn. Why? - Looking for the best and almost best alloys for his eventual plan (details in the doc). Trying to preserve the Allomancy in his family so as to remain relevant generations down the line. On another note, I think there was some WoB about Mistings existing pre-Ascention. Should that be worked in - perhaps for a few players who didn't start with lerasium? Also, I've been using my almost non-existent programming skills to try to turn this into an actual PC game, though it will probably end up as a 2-3 star Newgrounds flash game. I did a test playthrough, and counted four bugs, three lag spikes, and one good old fashioned endless loading screen - and that was just the menu. EDIT: I just realized, every other character is acting around 2000% more pious than me, a former priest of Terr; I'll try to balance it by preaching with every alternate sentence (I won't; that will just get annoying). Who knows, I'll probably turn Mennet Junior into an atheist.

The Coppermind's Birthday Extravagapalooza!
Adamir commented on Chaos's article in Brandon and Book News
Jasnah's page is... well... atrocious. While I'm only 60% of the way through Words of Radiance, it barely scratches past the first few chapters - and explores them in way too much detail. Permission requested to trim and extend? If my trimming is too extensive, I've saved a copy of the page on my laptop - I can revert it afterwards. I use the same username on the Coppermind, Adamir. -
I expected the first reply to be 'this is useless', and... I don't really have a defense against that. Thanks for the feedback!

Not Sure What to Put As Title Sooo . . . RUTABAGA
Adamir replied to The Honor Spren's topic in Introduce Yourself!
No offense intended, but I believe Mistborn to be the superior series simply because we don't get 800 pages of Kaladin moping around and being miserable in the first book. I like all of Sanderson's books, but that defied the concept of slow pacing. That was pacing that had gone so slow as to move in reverse at twice the speed of light, if that makes sense. It improved with Words of Radiance, but I still prefer to read something where interesting developments are not spaced out a hundred and fifty pages each.
