  1. My impression has always been that Feruchemy wasn't made by Preservation or Ruin, or even as a response to or balance between them. I understood that the planets in the Cosmere had their own natural "magic systems", Scadrial's being based on metals, and that Feruchemy is the native magic, without the Shards involvement. When each Shard put their spin on it, we got Allomancy from Preservation, and Hemalurgy from Ruin, but both are basically based on Feruchemy and the natural interaction of Investiture with metals on Scadrial. jW
  2. You know, I'd never thought about it, but it is mentioned that she's pretty much always burning bronze, I think both because she detected the mist shadow, and because she was worried about attacks on herself and Elend. She very well may have been a Bronze savant by then. jW
  3. Agreed, Moogle and CognitivePulsePattern, I don't think Szeth will kill T, I just noted that he's not going to be bound by Oaths or any order's strict requirements (it won't make him lose anything like when Kaladin or Shallan betrayed their oaths). There are plenty of other factors that make it unlikely or almost impossible, though he's been so twisted at this point anything could in theory happen. jW
  4. Thanks, ya'll, that makes a lot of sense! jW
  5. Szeth doesn't have to be bound by the restrictions even if he joins the Skybreakers, unless he bonds a spren. At this point he's not bonded to anything, so while he may bond with Nightblood in some way, I doubt there will be any limitations placed on him based on that. He should absolutely be able (from that perspective) to assassinate Taravangian. Whether he will do that will be up to the whims of Brandon, but nothing in-story should prevent him specifically. jW
  6. A multiple choice dad joke is a pop quiz. jW
  7. Didn't he know by that time that Taravangian held his Oathstone? He wasn't allowed by his rules to kill the person who held his Oathstone. Even if he didn't, I believe the order was phrased so T would have needed to specifically acknowledge Szeth's message, and he hadn't yet, so Szeth's wasn't permitted to kill him yet. jW
  8. I was pretty certain it was actually Ruin's influence making Alendi and Vin feel the well, rather than them actually picking it up with heightened bronze. I suspect Alendi just had the one spike, and didn't need any more because Ruin just made him think he was sensing the well. jW
  9. I was rereading WoR, and came across this passage again: “He did catch Rock shooing away a lanky man in an ardent’s robe. “What was that?” Kaladin asked, catching the Horneater as he passed. “That one,” Rock said. “Keeps loitering here with sketchbook. Wants to draw bridgemen. Ha! Because we are famous, you see.” Kaladin frowned. Strange actions for an ardent—but, then, all ardents were strange, to an extent.” I don't recall it ever coming up again, but it struck me that we might be seeing another Lightweaver or else someone connected to one of our various groups of intrigue. Has there been speculation about who he is? jW
  10. Probably oxen rather than cows, technically, but definitely interesting. I think I probably just skimmed right over that reference. jW
  11. That's what I've been beginning to suspect but couldn't quite put into words. That sums it up nicely, and would fit with Preservation's Intent (since Allomancy is of Preservation, of course). jW
  12. Wait, what? I didn't get that at all, first time I've seen it mentioned… jW
  13. I like Japanese (and liked it even more the first time I used Jondesu as a username), and it basically is the simple way to respond to "What's your name?" or "Who are you?", since my name is Jon. I'd simply reply "Jon desu", or "Watashi wa Jon desu", so it became my username for many places. jW
  14. Yep, I'm using the Words of Radiance art, available from Tor here: http://www.tor.com/2014/01/23/download-the-revised-words-of-radiance-wallpapers/ It's breathtaking. jW
  15. True, fear of death was the alternative in that particular approach, but it does seem to be emotional extremes. I wonder, though, is there something more specific, perhaps tied to Preservation's Intent, that might be part of that, beyond just being extreme emotions? jW
  16. Oh, I don't think it was cheap to have her appear to be killed. It would have felt cheap if she were actually killed by simple thugs. :-) I fully agree with everything you said. jW
  17. What is the actual version of Windows 7 in the downloaded ISO? Often, the ones you get from school programs like that are a hybrid 32/64-bit installer, and those don't play nice with Boot Camp. I don't know if they would typically work better with VirtualBox, where you'd just need to set them as a boot source (add the ISO as a "drive"), but I have seen that cause problems before. jW
  18. Indeed, it can and does happen, though fortunately far less often in our modern world now. It used to be more common for mother or child (or both) to not survive childbirth. That said, I don't think it actually does take near-death for snapping. I think it takes a fear of death, which even a newborn (or in this case, partially-born) child can feel even if they don't understand any of the reason, but that the nobles always took it that far because they never knew whether the child would snap, and they didn't want to leave any chance that they simply didn't do enough. jW
  19. I agree with much of what you said, but just wanted to speak to this. Not only will Jasnah be in an unusual situation of finding that others have invalidated or already discovered the knowledge she usually is the first to share, but she's going to arrive to find that Shallan has partially outgrown her already. I suspect we'll find that while Shallan and Jasnah are going to continue to interact, much of their relationship will change dramatically due to Shallan's growth in her time without Jasnah, and that's going to create a lot of very good storyline for both of their characters, and possibly for others (including Adolin). I don't mind at all having her brought back, especially since we knew she was a Radiant-to-be, and it should be nearly impossible to kill them by ordinary means. It seemed really cheap to have her killed by a bunch of thugs in the first place, to me, and I was really glad when my suspicions were confirmed. jW
  20. That does indeed make a lot of sense! I don't know that that discounts the theory of them being spren, just maybe that they're Cultivation's spren and operate differently from Honor's that we've seen. The windspren were definitely busy in the midst of the high storm, indicating maybe they were at least enjoying all of the Stormlight (though perhaps also just the amount of wind, of course). jW
  21. He's incredibly skilled in their use, yes. However, that doesn't mean he's knowledgeable about why or how they work from a theoretical standpoint, just that he's learned how to make them do what he wants. Heck, we don't really know why gravity works or even exactly how, but we put it to very good use in a lot of very precise ways. jW
  22. I think that's a brilliant division on the first part! There's definitely a case for categorizing them that way, and I think I might go ahead and start treating that as headcanon. I don't think the other one makes as much sense, plus it's too similar to the internal/external metals division from Mistborn. I would be curious to see how they will divide between Honor, Cultivation, and perhaps some (most/all?) that are influenced by both. Are there some orders that are exclusively bound by Honor and others by Cultivation, or are they all a mix? jW
  23. I know I've proposed that theory on Reddit myself, so I wonder if that was my post you saw! I don't think that windspren are actually "alive" in the same sense that an honorspren is, so I don't think they would scream if dead as Shardplate. The theory definitely has merit, but if they're still alive, it doesn't make much sense (to me) that they wouldn't then revert back to their native forms rather than be locked as Plate. jW
  24. Heh, seems an ironic choice of words under the circumstances. jW
  25. Not only that, but Soulstone isn't metal either from what I can determine. It seems to be a smooth rock, fairly easy to scrape even with a fingernail, I believe. Some speculate it could be remnants of a moon that used to orbit Sel, possibly a focus of Dominion's power. jW
