  1. Following up on my previous post...another doctor has conceded defeat, and the next is talking surgical options. My day officially sucks beyond my previous imagination. jW
  2. I agree that it presents some problems of it's own. That said, I don't think it would have been the spren that lost focus. It think the Radiants themselves, perhaps under pressure from outside sources like the other nations or internal pressures of some type, may have agree to let non-surgebinders (so people who are not bonded to a spren) join their ranks, and that caused the organization as a whole to lose focus and become corrupted. I don't know that I really see that as a cause for the Recreance despite bringing it up, but it's obvious something along those lines was happening, whether it's tied to my idea or something else. jW
  3. Taravangian seemed to expect it was possible another Kholin was a Radiant. I wonder if it does have family connections, or if he simply made an assumption based on when he was told that a surgebinder had protected Dalinar. jW
  4. Cemci posted this in another topic, an epigraph in WoK Part 2, Chapter 46 "Child of Tanavast". I began to wonder about something based on that… do we know that all of the Radiants (at the end) were surgebinders? Is it possible they'd begun to admit members based on more political reasons, but that had caused them to lose their purpose and focus, and then the Recreance was the Radiants leaving in disgust basically? There'd have to be more, considering they knew what it would do to their spren (we assume), but I wonder if that could have been some portion of what led to the Recreance. jW
  5. Not exactly the same, since as mentioned we saw that Ruin was good at influencing minds but couldn't read them, where Preservation could read but not influence. I would presume that's linked to intent as well as the planetary magic system. Odium appears to be good at influencing those who are angry or hateful, understandably, though there may be more to it than that. In that way, it's possible that Cultivation (presumed to be behind or be the Nightwatcher) may actually have given Taravangian exactly what was needed: knowledge without emotion. That would mean the Diagram, in it's pure form, would be unavailable to Odium and couldn't be influenced. Of course, I came up with that on the spot, so poke all the holes you want. jW
  6. I'd actually say the discussion in that thread is leaning me even more towards agreeing that Devotion and Dominion are merging or merged into one Shard corpse, rather than being two. Harmony is very nearly one Shard and not two separate ones, but the fact that it was only recently combined and that it's two Shards that are such opposites would probably slow that process. Devotion and Dominion are already very compatible, and without a holder and in the situation they're in, I doubt they could ever be separated, making it at best a pointless distinction to still consider them separate Shards. It seems very likely that they are, for all intents and purposes, now one splintered Shard, rather than separate Shards that just happen to mingle and provide their investiture together. jW
  7. Owl City - Dementia jW
  8. Ooh, has anyone asked if a Nahel bond would be possible for someone not from Roshar? We know several other planets magic is very restricted, but that doesn't mean Roshar's is. jW
  9. Granted, but Ashton Kutcher and Miley Cyrus replace the lead actors. I wish I could understand babies cries. jW
  10. It's the Japanese kanji for fire, though rather stylized. Made it myself years ago.Quiver: Deep brooding Arrow avatar, always good looking. 8/10. jW
  11. Scary awesome. Like he's looking into my soul… and laughing. jW
  12. Yep, along with MRI's and MRA's and I forget what else. jW
  13. Either Taln or Nalan could be convincing fake Heralds at this point, definitely. I wouldn't be surprise if one of them or both are not who they're said to be. jW
  14. Yep, my teeth are almost too perfect. jW
  15. Yep, that all just continues to emphasize that the nature of the magic, and it's capabilities has more to do with the planet than the Shards (the Shards control the method of accessing it, while the abilities/powers it grants and the physical manifestation or key, depending on the magic system, come from the planet's natural magic system). I'd be curious if the natural magic systems that are the key to that on each planet are something inherent in the Cosmere, or if Adolnasium or something else was involved in those arising. jW
  16. Thanks for the suggestions, ya'll! I have been seeing doctors about it, a whole host of them, and found no solutions yet (not diabetic or hyper/hypoglycemic, which is good for me, and doesn't seem to be sinuses, nor anything a neurologist can treat). Currently working with a craniosacral massage therapist, actually, and researching additional options. jW
  17. I'm absolutely thoroughly pissed off at my own body right now (this isn't just a bad day, more like a bad year and a half)… Last January (New Year's Day, in fact), I woke up with a headache. Not just a mild, this-is-annoying kind of headache, but one of those ones that makes you want to just close your eyes and not open them again for a few hours. Sure, not a migraine either, but bad enough I called out of work halfway through the day. Fast forward over a year and a half: that headache hasn't gone away, and if anything has gotten worse. And by not gone away, I don't mean that I get it often. It's always there. 24/7/365. It's constantly wearing down my patience, my energy, my willpower, everything. This is on top of years of depression, though unacknowledged until more recently. I've debated throwing in the towel and just withdrawing completely from society, with only my duty to my family keeping me from quitting my job and retreating into some dark cave for a few years. Anyways, I won't ask anyone to excuse the rant, since that's what this topic is for, but I really wish this would just end and let me get back to something resembling normalcy. No matter what Arthur Dent thinks of that. jW
  18. I'm still working on my theory of how it works, but I think that while Truths are required for a Lightweaver to progress, they don't need to be contradictions of Lies they've told themselves. Rather, I think they must learn about themselves and speak Truths to progress, deep Truths about what they learn, but then if they put themselves in a position of having lied to themselves about who they are, that has the same damaging effect that Kaladin breaking his word and doing something dishonorable had, and they must them unbreak the bond by undoing the lies they told themselves. It's possible some of that is even unique to Shallan in a way, though I suspect any Lightweaver would have the potential for similar issues. That means that Shallan, at a young age, would have simply needed to become very self-aware and learn things about herself, not necessarily correct deep-seated lies about herself. Still difficult for someone who's only a child, but not nearly the same thing. Also, how old was she? I had been thinking 5-6 for some reason in my mind, but I think the timeline of the books implies she was more like 11-12 instead (but I could be entirely wrong about that). jW
  19. I like it, and I think there's a lot of truth to this, though I don't know how much the intents of the Shards matter once they're splintered (and we won't until Brandon decides to reveal it, if he does), but I imagine there's some significant aspects that don't require a mind behind the intent to manifest, just without direction as to when and how. Now, where this becomes really interesting is if we learn if there is indeed a way to un-splinter a Shard and pick it up. If someone could pick up the new DorShard (I'd say Unity is a great name for it), they would easily become the greatest threat to Odium beyond even Harmony, because while their power might be slightly less than Harmony's, they would be much more capable of putting it to use effectively. jW
  20. Heh, just a habit I picked up years ago. If you were on the MacRumors forums 3-4 years ago (or earlier), you'd have seen it a lot probably, and a few other places. As for the truths/oaths, I don't think it was confirmed that 4 truths = 4 oaths, though, which is what was being commented on (that I may have implied unintentionally). I also disagree with CognitivePulsePattern's idea that Lightweavers progress unusually quickly; I think we're given an incorrect impression by how quickly Shallan is progressing now, but only because she is relearning rather than learning this all for the first time. She's a very broken, self-delusional girl who is nearly at the point of multiple personalities, and is going to take a long time to heal those wounds even with Pattern's help. jW
  21. Not one to one maybe, but definitely confirmed by Pattern that she needed to speak truths to progress. Either way, she'd obviously progressed in her bond and talents far beyond where she is now, before nearly severing her bond. jW
  22. It's implied, though possibly misleading, that his bond with Syl has some connection to his fighting ability. It's possible it's just improved reflexes, speed, and strength that every Radiant would get, but it could easily be a specific benefit of the bond with an Honorspren like Syl instead of a Cryptic like Pattern. There's some significant debate over what the quote I'm thinking of actually means, but it's at least undeniable that he's better at fighting because of the bond, whether it's simply due to being able to use Stormlight or if there's more involved. Shallan was bonded to Pattern very early, and then surpassed the memory. I don't think there's anything conscious about the bond beginning, since Kaladin didn't know anything about Syl until he'd begun bonding her, but there is definitely a need to understand and say the First Ideal at least, and it's implied jW
  23. I don't know that the WoB quoted there says anything about that part, actually. I'd say discovering what the Heralds did might well have led to the Recreance, though it may have been entirely unrelated. I'm sure Odium's touch was involved, unless it was a plan to strike against Odium's power in some way as has been speculated, but it's also possible that something as simple as discovering that the Heralds had abandoned their Honorblades and lied about the Desolations being over could have been behind it. jW
  24. It's up at the top of sheer, unclimbable cliffs, hidden up at the top of the mountain range. I'm a little surprised no one has seen the tower, maybe, but definitely not surprised no one's managed to get to it. jW
  25. Sorry, should have been more specific. The natural magics that arise on each planet are amplified when Shards set up, and have a lot to do with the types of magic the Shards can set up (this is of course all my theory, but appears to be based on what Brandon has said and what we see in-world), so while no, Feruchemy itself didn't exactly exist prior to the Shards, I also don't think it was created by the Shards directly, but was merely the result of a lot of Investiture from the Shards suddenly being dumped into the system as they created humans and other things on the planet, and therefore the development of Feruchemy was unintentional and not governed by the Shards, but was simply a natural outgrowth of the magic that Scadrial already had naturally. jW
