You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Sirce Luckwielder replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
. . . No . . . Generally, whenever I have fantasies that involve Sanderson-related material, I wonder what kinds of metalminds I could be storing st any given moment in time. If I'm in Calculus, I figure that I could store speed, weight, and a few of my senses, but I probably want to keep my sight tapped as well as my mental acuity. I'll probably keep the copper running overtime. It's usually either that, or thinking: "If I was Obliteration, I could just go up to my teacher, say 'I'm through with this crap!' and then blow myself up, really just teleporting away while everybody thinks I commited suicide from Calc exhaustion." Does anybosy else have that fantasy, or am I the only one? -
There is actually several Shardic number theory forums around. Take a look at what people have come up with. There are a ton of non-coincidenced in them. For example, Roshar is ten. That one isn't really hard to see. It is obvious that Scadrial is two. Nalthis is five. Etc. If I can find the forum, I'll edit the link into this.EDIT: This is the first of three Shard number theories. You'll see that this one links to the next two. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/8773-shardic-number-theory-revisited-part-one-shards/

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...

How often does this happen to you? Do you have a lot of moments where you feel that you need to sever someone's soul from their body? -
This isn't totally the debate that we have been having, but it is one facet. Here is a rundown. Mailliw had Smasher rush across the battlefield while intangible and start to strangle Kinesis, my character, by turning himself, or just his hands and arms to tangibility again. After this post of him killing him without much say, I put forth that Kinesis wouldn't let himself be strangled without putting up a fight. With his teleportation powers, he could have hit Smasher or his hands and done SOMETHING to try and stop Smasher, not just sit there and die. Once we established that Kinesis, or perhaps Mary, would have done something, Mailliw decided to renege this option. He then moved onto the forcefield idea. I don't especially mind if he has the power to change his forcefields, but it is the implementation that I do not like. As Mailliw pointed out, Smasher prefers to use his hands in combat whenever possible, which is why he has never used this new power. Against an Epic like Kinesis, one who has no Prime Invincibility, who Smasher doesn't really see as a threat, he wouldn't normally use a power that he has been keeping secret until this time. It just doesn't make sense. So, that is the specific scene that is being debated. Now, for the bigger picture. The Destructors are losing against the Astorian forces. Mailliw was having them call retreat, and this is to be their parting blow against Astoria before they attempt to get away. So, if they are asking for a formal surrender, they aren't going to get it if they attempt to kill another Epic. It wouldn't really make sense for Mary and the other Astorian Epics to bargain with the Destructors if they try to kill their forces, and only then come forth to "parlay," as they say. If they are going to try and high-tail it out of there, they will be leaving in Jeeps and trucks. Having Smasher attack to get a kill and then try to get away also doesn't seem to make as much sense. Jag and Smasher are already outside the main battle until they reengage. Why would they want to draw attention to themselves if they are going to retreat. Astoria is surrounded on three sides by water, which is Winterspell's domain. They also have Mary, who can basically go anywhere in the city instantly. On top of that, they have Deathgale, who can fly above them much faster than a Jeep or truck. Based on all of this, the true decision we are faced with is if it makes sense for Smasher to even attack Kinesis in the first place. So, really we are faced with multiple polls or decisions: 1) The obvious one of giving Smasher this power. 2) It doesn't make sense in his plan to get away. 3) If the second one is a yes, is using an offensive forcefield power that he has kept hidden until this time against a minor Epic seem in character for Smasher. 4) If he does attack Kinesis, can Kinesis sense the forcefields that Smasher places down with his spatial awareness power. Even if he can't move them, could he sense them in place or sense the air where it is displaced. That doesn't even mean that he has time to react, but it is a potential point that we would like to address. There may be more points to look at, but these are the ones that I have at this moment. For all intents and purposes of the first one, I think he could have the power, so that raises it to 2-0 for Smasher's new power. The thing that we am against is the implementation of said power and the ramifications of such. Now, if Kinesis is in a position that he can only logically die without the intervention that would be against the "rules" so to speak, I am totally fine with him dying. He came into this fight as a pawn to lose. However, if Smasher wants to kill him, he needs to get around a lot. He has already tried to send Jag at him at the same time, but Jag isn't getting anywhere. (This is concurrent, so he doesn't have much to go on with how Kinesis operates as he hasn't seen him for more than a couple of minutes and Smasher was distracted while he was using his powers). However, for the Destructors, this is the fourth or fifth option that they have thrown to try and kill Kinesis. They have used different strategies, rewritten posts, and even used a little outside of world knowledge. Again, if everybody is okay with this: Kinesis dies. However, if we are needing to go this far out of the way to make it happen, is it really worth the trouble? The stakes are the lives of Kinesis, Smasher, or any of the other characters in the collaboration right now. If he simply walked away from the fight, he wouldn't be losing anything, just gaining a power. By attacking, he potentially loses his life, possibly his hands or any other part that he turns tangible, or his ability to get away. But he does gain the new power and the death of a minor Epic on his hands. We have explored the potential options for what Smasher could do and Mary or Kinesis have made it hard for him at each turn. So Mary or Kinesis haven't actually done anything as of yet, but to all of the previous methods that Mailliw put forth the Astorian Epics have all completed counter-moves that make Mailliw unwilling to go that route. This is Astoria, so there are lots of cheap ways to kill and O.P. powers. That is fine by me for Smasher to have, but implementation is my main concern. Again, the above stance. One thing that may not be clear initially is that we are honestly trying to work this out. We don't want to turn this into a fight or feud, so sorry if it seems that way, but we are all trying to keep this cool. Both sides are going to adhere to the decisions that are final.

I used to think that I could go back to reading books by other authors when I was finished with Sanderson's current library. I have found that I was mistaken. -

You just made my day sir. Or when your first thing you think about when seeing Breaths work is much like the Holy Ghost they are. -
Lockvault's companion teleported them beneath the surface to an old room. Lockvault pulled a flashlight from Storage, shining the beam through the dust in the air until he found a lightswitch. Flicking it up, a faded yellow bulb illuminated the room with a musty light. "So." The Adventurer said, turning to Lockvault. "What do you think?" Looking around, he saw that the room had enough room for anything that they may need to hold. It would require a bit of an fixing-up, but it wouldn't be too hard with Lockvault's powers. He closed his eyes, seeing the full room in Memory alongside what he carried in his Inventory. He placed all of the dust from the room into Storage, cleaning everything up. He then placed all extraneous furniture and any broken objects along with the dust. He exchanged the old lightbulb for a new fluorescent one, then began to make some other changes to the room. He placed several tables, chairs, and anything else he thought they would need around the room. Going over to some stairs that likely led to the surface, he set up a small four traps to dispell any curious would-be visitors and covered the entrance with a massive peice of concrete. Turning to the Adventurer, he smiled. "I like it. Anything you think we need here besides beds? I don't have any of those in my Inventory right now."

This is true. We already know that Winterspell doesn't particularly like the Astorian Government. It would take something to get him to turn though, he isn't that uncomfortable in his position right now to turn coats willy nilly. Mary basically runs the place already, what's to stop her from taking over? I think the biggest blow to Astoria would come if any of the major Epics switched sides. Not an easy task, but potentially workable. Could he also heal or inoculate people with his powers? Having an Epic of his caliber would be very helpful for any opposing factions and they could potentially put him in a power role for his help.

One reason for having it be a rival town with many of the new Epics. They would already have a base of power to build from. Or we would need tons and tons of minor Epics all working together, your forte I believe. That is true. Before more and more Epics create a regime, this might need to happen to purge the city. As it is, any of these Epics could take down a city, as already noted. Plunging Oregon into chaos is the end goal, even if what we are doing is trying to have fun along the way. Starting a massive civil war with several cities from Oregon and Washington would help realize that goal. Can't Bioterror not hurt Epics? That would help in one way. If there was a multi-front war, would they stick together or split up, because that would be one way to keep things more even. What I am mainly saying is that it would be cool to have a large conflict. It doesn't even need to succeed, but it would still be cool to have multiple cities, Epics, and factions all in on a major conflict. I only brought this up to see what support there was, either from current Epics or anybody who wants to add to the rival faction. If people seriously want this, they can make it happen. Build new Epics or merge their Epics into the different factions.

This doesn't necessarily need to be right now, just soonish. In our collaboration between the Astorian Government and the Destructors we came up with the idea of a civil war. Since the Government is so hard to take down, having crazy powerful Epics such as Deathgale, the Metal, Bloody Mary, Winterspell, and Lucentia, just to name a few, it would likely need a large scale war to bring destruction to Astoria. Perhaps a bunch of Epics in Longview, Washington want to control the river so they can get all of the trade and such. With Astoria so powerful, they can't achieve that goal. Now however, with all of the Epics coming in, they see an opportunity and start to contact the new Epics, hoping to make an alliance. This doesn't need to go into effect now, it doesn't need to happen at all, but this is just an idea that we can look into. I haven't been on the Question thread lately due to a busy schedule in real life, but I will try to check it to see who wants to join. I don't even need to run it, but I would like to provide some input to whoever wants to head it.

As the Metal finished the conversation, Lockvault breathed a sigh of relief. He had come to a meeting with three High Epics and nobody had even tried to kill him. With his parting words said, the Metal turned away from them leading Brightdeath away. Lockvault followed suit, turning the Adventurer away and leading him back to the building where they had been before the Metal had shown up. They walked through the open wall, dust still streaming from the cracked mortar. They got up on a table and the Adventurer phased them through the ceiling to the floor they had been on before. Looking out through the wall, he noticed that the Metal and Brightdeath had left view. Looking to the Adventurer, he signed to him a quick question. Are they gone? He received the quick reply and breathed a sigh of belief. “From now on, whenever we are in public I should keep up the façade, maybe when we are in private too.” "Sure, I'll let you know if anything crops up on my minimap. Remind me to teach you proper ASL too, my fingers are cramped and if I'm going to marathon this that could be a problem. So! Time to find a base somewhere?" "Sure. A base would be great. Also, I have a language key installed so you will only need to show me different signs once. After that I can use them without needing to be retaught. Before we go find a place for our base, let's find that reward for beating that boss nonviolently." "Oh yeah! Loot, almost forgot about that. Hmm... I can't find anything on the minimap, must need to look by hand. Do you have any idea where it dropped?" Lockvault walked around the room, placing anything of value in to Storage. As he went, he looked through the open wall into the street below. Nobody had yet come out of their homes with the Epics still around. He withdrew an old trunk that he had found in a museum and placed it in the center of the street below with a large rifle inside. It was one of the fancier models and much better than the Adventurer’s current weapon. It would be enough to please him. “Wait, I just got something, there must have been a time limit, clever designers.” Lockvault smiled at that. The Adventurer may have been odd, but at least he found joy in the world. It would be enjoyable to stay with him, at least for a while. Besides, he might need somebody to keep him out of trouble. Until it becomes too dangerous, I’ll help him live his fantasy.
