Is magic: the gathering lore worth getting into?
Orlion Blight replied to king of nowhere's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I don't know about Magic specifically, but other card games I play (Legend of the Five Rings & Arkham Horror) are enhanced by the lore. You pretty much get into the lore to improve your playing experience, not because it's good literature (it's not). -
Book 4 Update #1 from Brandon
Orlion Blight replied to What's a Seawolf?'s topic in Stormlight Archive
Does anyone recall how long it took him to outline Oathbringer? I suspect this will be longer because he's outlining Book 4 & 5, but it's good to have an idea of if he's "on schedule". -

George Carlin is not, nor was he ever, a creative comedic genius. His brand of observational humor is so common, all you need to do is walk into a bar and find an exasperated drunk and you pretty much have a George Carlin routine. -
How many Ooklas are there?

Enough. *pumps shotgun* That's unrelated, got some Pinkertons to deal with! -
I would still say it's Brandon's best work to date, no contest. Finished Submission and Leviathan's Wake. Reading Master and Margarita now.

Best of the Year (2018)!
Orlion Blight replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Favorite movie: Paths of Glory Favorite book: That I've read this year, KA: Dar Oakley in the Ruins of Ymr by John Crowley. Published this year? No contest, it was Space Opera by Catherynne M Valente. Seriously, only a John Crowley book published the year before could compete! -
I think I'll hit the bottle while I sing Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man in between sobs. Or play board games, I dunno.

Controversial Opinions
Orlion Blight replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Pretty much, Rose is a wasted character. A good portion of her actions are part of the much maligned "casino planet" side garbage and she crashed into Finn's ship because of reasons (yes, I know "why", don't at me). Because the director/ writer didn't respect her enough to give her more then a hackneyed part, that allowed the bigots with their "political correctness is ruining Star Wars, just look at Rose!" garbage to take center stage. Rose's part just isn't compelling enough. Also, General Holdo was right to not tell Poe jack about the plan. And frankly, Poe should have been ejected through an airlock for pretty much single-handedly destroying the Resistance. -

Koloss Head Munching Day 2018

I am curious and have a working hypothesis: did you start reading Stormlight recently and/ or read them pretty much back-to- back? -
Koloss Head Munching Day 2018
Orlion Blight replied to Ashertliden's topic in General Brandon Discussion
It's released for free online with currently no plans to publish and sell it. As of now, it's free labor and only counts as a tax write-off. We all ready know Brandon switches projects frequently to recharge. That implicit compromise is entered by the readers with the understanding that that will lead to some works of quality for what they really want. Of course, it's starting to look like that might not be the case. As was noted before, Oathbringer is viewed as a bit of a drop in quality. And that's when he committed to writing the book! The Lost Metal now seems like more of a burden to him since he preferred to write for free instead of on it with a tone-deaf "all is not lost!" when he made a mild possible commitment to maybe write it while taking a break from SA4. -
Koloss Head Munching Day 2018
Orlion Blight replied to Ashertliden's topic in General Brandon Discussion
It also wasn't until towards the end of the year that he was signaling that The Lost Metal was not getting written. Until then, it was "Don't worry, this won't take long to write, I'll still have it done by end of year!" Finding out he did not do it because he wanted to write a Magic novella for free kinda feels like a minor betrayal. The state of SA4, on the other hand, has not changed. It was always planned to be written during the proposed time period and that hasn't moved one bit. There's nothing new to get excited about there. The only thing that has changed is that The Lost Metal will be out maybe in 2021 instead of 2019. You know, unless he decides to do some free labor again for a property he doesn't own. -

Koloss Head Munching Day 2018
Orlion Blight replied to Ashertliden's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Just wait until you find out it was postponed for a licensed Magic: The Gathering novel. I'm surprised I did not get the cops called on me, due to my sustained and loud swearing at my phone screen. Other than that unpleasantness, it is pretty much what I expected. And I will continue to expect that we won't have a hope of The Lost Metal getting written until after Stormlight 4 is mostly completed. Main change in my thinking is that it might be written before Skyward 3. -

The Darkness That Comes Before &c.
Orlion Blight replied to Ripheus23's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Same here. I have the Aspect Emperor series, I just have not gotten around to reading them yet. I kinda want to do them in one go when I do. That's suppose to be the point, I believe. You have this terrible plot by this terrible race to annihilate life in order to avoid damnation, but at the same time you have humanity which is very despicable as well. Who do you root for and why? As far as there not being free will, I think that's a bit simplistic. Sure, "what comes before determines what comes after," but the reason the Dunyain are trying to perceive the Logos is that through sufficient knowledge, you can be free. How free we are depends on how much we know. The Inchori have other profane and obscene ideas about how to gain freedom, so one way to see the series is a conflict between the two extremes of reason and carnality as not only a means of gaining freedom, but also its relation to nihilism (the Inchori embrace the No-God, whereas Kellhus wishes to prevent its return). -
