Sure, Alcatraz is bad... but you still got Zoidberg, YOU ALL STILL HAVE ZOIDBERG! -
Game of Thrones (Spoilers for the latest episodes)

I guess it's kinda nice that the characters are almost caught up to what the audience knows. Also, if I wanted to watch Neverending Story... -
What are you playing right now?
Orlion Blight replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I'll have to slightly disagree with the two of you. The first Golden Sun is an underrated classic. The sequel is a mess of missed potential (so calibrate your expectations accordingly) and there are no other Golden Sun games -
Started watching My Hero Academia. So far it's 25% Action, 15% Exposition, 17% inspirational speeches and 43 % Midoriya crying. Waaaay better than Attack on Titan (but, then again, I hate that show)

I wonder if this movie would be good if only it wasn't supposed to be a Joker movie. I like the direction away from Jared Leto, I don't like the Joker having a backstory. The memoriability of the Joker is in his simplicity, a simplicity that almost turns him into a force. He's not supposed to be a developed character. That said, if the reviews are fine, I might check it out.

Well, shoot, I think you are right. Was really hoping for my interpretation. Thanks for the correction, at least now I won't wrongfully believe Brandon broke a nonbinding promise when he likely works on Skyward 3 after Stormlight 4.

as an atheist I'm glad Brandon is mormon

I wouldn't take it as such. @Chaos always tends to post his "we are watching you" warning whenever a religious debate is starting or about to start. That's from experience on the internet telling him that things could go terribly south. -
It certainly contributed significantly. Though what really pushed TLM from being "possibly written" to delayed was Brandon deciding to write the Magic novella. That pretty much took the time frame that would have otherwise been used to write TLM. Now, for some "good" news! In the newsletter he sent out, Brandon did say that Stormlight 4 and TLM would be written before Skyward 3. It's some good news for me as it is more of a concrete promise then what was provided in the State of Sanderson. It also means that if it gets delayed again, you Skyward fans will get to taste the bitterness of delay! Mwahaha!

It is, and the push is coming from the "new leader", not an organic cultural development. Particularly when for the past couple decades, millions of dollars have been spent by the church to associate it with the label "Mormon." It's kind of like people getting mad when you write X-Mas instead of Christmas. It ignores the history of the word by making up a problem and leads to, frankly, petty policing of language. -

Yeah, I'm hoping my friend grabbed some tickets for opening Saturday like he said he would, otherwise I'm going to have to accept having the film spoiled for me.

Got Kellanveds Reach yesterday from my local book shop as a book because I believe reading a book involves actually reading words *glares at heretics in thread* Any hows, I think now is a good time to read Deadhouse Landing for the first time

There are a few things where Mormonism affects Cosmere writing, but it luckily has not controlled it, yet. The main effects are: 1) How he writes relationships... which is typically prudish. Pretty much all of them. There is kinda one case in Warbreaker, but that's really the only case I see. 2) There is a huge character arch in Hero of Ages that is heavily influenced by Mormon themes. Luckily, the conclusion of the arch isn't Mormon, which made it far more interesting as a result. -

Brandon talks about it in his 2018 State of the Sanderson. That will give you the best summary and you can decide how to feel about it, if anything. I'll even do part of the work for you and link to it! https://brandonsanderson.com/state-of-the-sanderson-2018/ -

Yes, specifically a certain betrayal of trust, as in he chose to do one thing he wanted to do instead of what he had committed to do. To be sure, that's different from not delivering because of failure. Your reasoning with how consistent he has delivered product coupled with genuine attempts to fulfill an obligation would be reasons to forgive. So, let's say The Lost Metal was delayed because he wanted to deliver on something for his contract left unfulfilled by the Apocalypse Guard fiasco, that would not be betrayal, and I would still grumble but not have this sense of not being able to take Brandon away his word. That's not the same with the Magic novella. It was a late decision that he knew would affect (possibly alienate) a good portion of his fans. In my case, he's lost a good bit of my trust, hence why I call it a betrayal. That's also why, for me, looking to his record does not help, I'm particular because I can't recall a similar past event, whereas in my "failure" example, I could say "Words of Radiance was put on hold so he could finish Wheel of Time and the end result was fantastic." We don't have that here. And to be sure, I would never call him out directly on it, be it online or in person. I'm a bit too stoic for that and even I am not that big a jerk. -
A good plan, he's building up antici.............pation for the upcoming book, which is very much needed due to his recent record.

Unpopular Brandon Sanderson Opinions

Yep. Imagine if he ended Reckkners properly instead of trying to open up another franchise, we would probably still have Skyward for those that like it AND the Lost Metal AND that horrid Magic Novella. Apocalypse Guard was a misstep. It was not ready for primetime, and honestly I don't know if it ever will be. The way he talks about it, it's going to be completely different anyway. So, time for another unpopular opinion that I've mentioned elsewhere, but not in this thread! Apocalypse Guard was a mistake, the Magic novella was a betrayal. -

Remorselessly criticizing his work! Like I said, maybe in a more appropriate thread. But I will say that I enjoy his Cosmere work like I enjoy MCU movies: as fun entertainment. Did not care for Legion, personally. I never read Calamity (thankfully). I was out upon finishing Firefight. -
Status Bar Update!
Orlion Blight replied to BrightnessSamantha's topic in General Brandon Discussion
We won't. Unless you count the third volume of White Sands from Dynamite, and let's face it: nobody does. The best we can hope for is for the Lost Metal to show up around the same time, which I think is unlikely. -
Both Erikson and Esslemont are "meh" writers... like the vast majority of SFF authors writing these days. Not entirely their fault, the commercial demands of the genre value "story" more than being able to turn a phrase. That's one reason why it will, for the most part, never be as high-brow as "literary fiction." What makes Esslemont better right now is that his products scratch the itch that Malazan fans have. They want lore, world and history exploration! Esslemont provides that, and aside from being somewhat reticent (a requirement to write Malazan books) he's not pretentious about it. I do not think Erikson is capable of not being pretentious, and it rubs his readers the wrong way. This in particular with the Kharkanus books, which may or may not offer any definitive lore because post-modernism! History doesn't exist in an objective sense, it's just interpretations of history or whatever the artist wants to create! And then there's the pretentiousness attending some of his sci-fi novels. Which no one wanted. I have high hopes for the Karsa trilogy. So long as he puts a lid on his post modernist "the interpretation is the reality" bull r u s t, he should be fine.

All the Cosmere books, specifically. I've read some of the other stuff and concluded that I did not want to read a non-Cosmere Brandon Sanderson novel again. As far as the actual implied question, I don't feel the poster's antagonism warrants or entitles an explanation of any positive views I may have about Sanderson that might have led me to seek out the site. Perhaps in a more appropriate topic, or if you DM me -

Why am I posting unpopular opinions about Brandon Sanderson in a topic about unpopular opinions on Brandon Sanderson? Hmmm... that is quite the puzzler! I don't know if science will ever be advanced enough to answer that question!- 686 replies
