I actually do like oysters. But they do not mix with quesadillas at all. -

Some advice? Oyster quesadillas are a terrible idea. Do not ask how I know this and I'll tell you no lies. -

The problem with having a crush on a friend and admitting to said crush, and then being gently rejected, is that you're still around that crush all the time. It's hard to flip that switch into the "off" position with the person being there all the time; it's confusing and upsetting and generally kind of a rough deal. Add to that the fact that you are in high school and all of the hormones are SET TO FULL BLAST and it is nigh-impossible to detach oneself from the emotions of the crush. The only thing that breaks this, I'm afraid, is distance. It's not her fault; she's probably trying her best to separate out the gooshy feelings from the friendship ones. And it's not your fault, because you've been totally honest with her. It's one of those things that sucks rancid chull balls, but wishing it away won't make it so. -

OK, break things up into manageable pieces. Do not look at the entire mountain, for that will drive you mad. For each piece, set a rewards. "I do this thing, and I can do X fun thing for 15 minutes. I do this next thing, and then I can have a chocolate bar." Make yourself stick to it. -
Hey, do any of you guys want me to start a PM conversation for sharing contact info to coordinate meet-ups during the con? That way we can give each other information like phone numbers to text each other and find each other at the con without the digits being up there for all the Shard to see.

Conversation I just had: Coworker: "Hey, Rosemary, why does this form say [thing] when the other form says [other thing]?" Me: "...because I wrote it down wrong and I sometimes make mistakes because am not a robot." Coworker: "How dare you not be a robot." Me: "I know. I'm just terrible with my non-roboticness."- 1963 replies

Because so many encryptions are based on the product that comes from multiplying two very large primes. If you have a way to predict and identify patterns in prime numbers, you have a way to break encryption. Still enough to pretty much ruin the security of all of the internet. The repercussions to the financial world alone would be dire. ETA @Oversleep: I don't know the exact details on how it works, but there's a lot of literature out there that worries about someone solving this. Being able to solve for the factors would pretty much bring it all to a halt, which would be pretty bad. James works on it more for fun than anything. I don't think he actually expects to solve it. I hope. ...which is why James isn't sure that he'd ever actually tell anyone if he solved the prime problem.- 1963 replies

My husband works off and on trying to solve the probably unsolvable problem of how to calculate/predict prime numbers. Keep in mind, if anyone ever did solve this, it would break encryption software. All of it. Completely. He also likes to sit in the dark and think about quantum mechanics because he thinks that science has it wrong. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to figure out how to explain his ideas, so he's also been trying to teach himself to use some sort of rendering software so that he can learn to illustrate the things in his brain. He has not progressed quickly. And some people think my hobbies are weird...- 1963 replies

Seconding this. The Myst games are excellent and sometimes frustratingly obtuse. I swear, if they ever invent a holodeck, these are the games I want adapted first because the worlds are soooo gorgeous.

A lot of radios now have USB ports on them. So you can make a thumb drive full of all of your favorite music, plug it in, and set it to Random.

I rather like to think that Paradox from the White Wolf Mage: the Ascension game results from the magic system dividing by zero. But it's Schroedinger's Zero, so it's only a problem when people notice it.- 1963 replies
