  1. Woot! Admittedly, I chose it because it happened to be the team that had active control of my local gym when I hit level 5. Which was a good thing, as it turned out that all of my coworkers had chosen Instinct and probably would have run me off had I picked anything else. Yes, I did. In fact, since it was here in my home city this year, I was actually staff in Con HQ, so I dove in up to my eyeballs. (I got to touch a Hugo Award. It was so shiny and smooth.) And yeah, it was really, really awesome. The exhibition hall alone was pretty epic, and the panels and stuff...just incredible. Though the highlight for me was winning a top award in the Masquerade that bumped me up from Novice to Journeyman in costume competition level. I have pictures up in the cosplay thread linked in my signature. Thanks! I kind of get a kick out of the silly names, though most of my 'mon just get renamed their IV percentage. Not even with their type name, like you do. But my "keepers", my powerful ones, they get names. Peaches the Vulpix, Pattycake the Tauros, Trogdor the Burninator Flareon. Squeezy is a Machoke now. *snif* They grow up so fast. Awesome! I am going to freeze my fingers solid, I'm sure, but it'll be fun anyway. So many Pokemon. So many stops to spin. DC I AM COMING AND YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
  2. I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up, from a very young age. I was stoked! I was excited! I was going to DO IT! ...and then I got old enough to understand that Starfleet Academy wasn't a real place.
  3. I'm using NaNo to start the rough draft of the next book (maybe further) so that I can pick my momentum back up enough to finish the final revisions of book one. There's some timeline stuff that I really need to hash out to make it all work together, and to do that I need to know where I'm going. Oh, my loyal beta readers. Where would I be without you?
  4. Where at least some people got some amusement out of, "Father, no!" before the joke got ground into mulch, nobody likes Jar Jar. Nobody.
  5. Just remember - if you damage me permanently, I'll never get to finish that fanfic that everybody has totally forgotten about because I'm a slacker.
  6. I am one of those obsessive types who can stick with a thing long past the point of reason, so I'll at least keep up my daily catch and spin through the winter. I have enough coworkers still playing that at the end of the day, there's always a cluster of spawn outside the building. And there's a park on my way home that I can stop at and spin without leaving the warmth of my car. Suburban, though there really are a lot of good places to go if I feel so inclined; Kansas City is an oddly sprawling metro area with weird islands of urbanity hiding amongst swaths of forest. WorldCon was kind of awesome; it was downtown amongst a sea of Pokestops with a PoGo meetup every day. I caught a ton of Zubats and Clefairies. Right now, there's a local park that's a Pinsir spawning ground (though I think they change up the nests every so often, so it's liable to change soon). I'm sure I'll get a Pikachu eventually, but I don't get very many 2k eggs. Tons of 5k, only ever one 10k. I do some gym battling, but I've been chronically low on Revives lately and am kind of trying to build them back up again before I go on another gym spree. I'm Team Instinct, so my gym takeovers never stick for long. I do probably need to start hoarding Stardust again, but at the time I really needed my high-IV Flareon and Jolteon to level up enough to be gymworthy. But I have noticed that hatched 'mon tend to have a lot stronger stats than most wild-caught. I was lucky enough to hatch a Machop that's around the 97th percentile, so he's going to be well worth cultivating. In keeping with my habit of giving my keepers silly names, I call him Squeezy. Heh. I appreciate the thought. Though I'm going to be in D.C. in a couple of months, so I should be getting my own crack at exploring what the Pokehunting there has to offer. Just watch. I'll be that one idiot showing up early to the political protest so I can get in some Pokestop spins before things get started.
  7. It is very strange suddenly being in here. I feel like I just fell through a trap door in the Shard and into the scary basement.
  8. There is also a thread about the Ookla names with a full explanation.
  9. The original hope in the banking industry was to leapfrog over chip card technology to the next level, because the chipped plastic is so much more expensive to produce. The Target hack triggered an uproar about fraud, though, and pushed it forward. The irony is that chip cards wouldn't have actually done anything to prevent or mitigate that particular hack. It's both amusing and distressing to see how clueless the general public is about technology. Oh. And also I have Google Fiber. It's fast. Living in the Kansas City metro has the occasional weird advantage.
  10. Would you believe I have yet to catch a Pikachu? Haven't even seen one spawn. It's distressing, I tells ya. Yeah, I'm a bit iffy on Gen 2 coming out quite that quickly. I would think that something that big would involve a lot of hype on their part to get people interested. I'm torn on candy hoarding right now, because my Jolteon and Flareon need upgrading some more, and I have yet to get a Vaporeon worth keeping. I'd like to have my first gen set before I start looking at new Eeveelutions. Still haven't found an Onix, nor enough Horseas to even get my Gen 1 evolution in. The big CP shift they did a couple weeks ago really shook things up. On the one hand, I got a few BIG jumps in Pokemon power for a few of my key 'mon. On the other...well, it rendered the IV calculator spreadsheet that Oudeis sent me ages ago completely unusable. I had to go out and find a new calculator, and it took a couple of days before they started getting updated with the new values.
  11. I do! Though I'm considerably behind you; only level 22, and still a ton of critters in my dex still sitting in sad chalk outlines. With winter setting in, I'm not likely to get out and about nearly as often as I had been. I keep hearing rumors about Gen 2 lurking around the corner. Some people think it's going to be next week, while others figure it'll be after the the first of the year in the spring when it starts to warm up again. That might revitalize things.
  12. This thread's difficulty curve has increased wildly with the advent of Ookla Season.
  13. That would break the forum rules on signature size.
  14. Well, if they are saying it sarcastically, then they are jerks and deserve to be shunned. Shuuuuuuuuuuuuuun uh
  15. Ha. Found you, T.
  16. I wonder if he's used indubitable yet? Probably just a matter of time.
  17. Yes. On his acknowledgements page, Brandon always refers to Peter with an adjective modifier that starts with an 'i'.
  18. You just run daily searches of the forums with a bunch of yarn keywords, don't you? Heh, I heard about that. Though in comic book form, rather than another movie. I am interested to get hold of it. (I actually do love The Dark Crystal now. What's terrifying to a seven-year-old is just really neat for an adult.)
  19. Pretty sure I'd be solvable even if my userpic weren't the same.
  20. Heh. He has not, and I don't think he realizes that I ever did. GG went off the air before we met, IIRC. This is a bit outside of our usual genre, and he's going to be terribly puzzled when I insist on bingewatching it once NaNo is over.
  21. Heh. You'll probably be more adept at doing it the "correct" way than I am. I never did conquer the technique of holding the lead-in yarn with my left hand like you're supposed to. I wrap it with my right, which is probably part of why my stitches are so tight. Once you have it down, your tension will probably be more consistent than mine ever will.
  22. Honestly, with knitting you're using both of your hands pretty heavily anyway. I'm not really sure there's much point to trying to reverse it, and you may be causing yourself more problems that way than just learning it the non-mirrored way. There's a lot that just comes down to ingraining the muscle memory.
  23. Here, this may help: http://www.knittinghelp.com/ Basically, this woman puts up videos of just about every knitting stitch and technique in existence. You can watch it over and over again till you get the hang of it without having to pester someone about it. I found the site very, very helpful when I was learning how to knit. Edit: Whaaa? I hopped up another rep level? That seemed awfully fast compared to last time.
  24. I...need to watch this. My husband is going to be so confused.
  25. Friendsgiving was awesome. We managed to fit 18 people at tables into my house. At once. And nobody got relegated to couch overflow. There may have been some impromptu random singing where people took classic rock songs and made them about pie. Na na na na na na na na Hey hey Eat pie Yay! Now you should go and watch The Dark Crystal and experience what terrified the socks off me when I was seven.
