Ever consider Mercury? I only ask because this came thought the firehose for me this morning"
-
So, couple side to that. The current Spren on Roshar are made of some mix of Honor and Cultivation's Investiture (all have at least a bit of both), except the Voidspren which are weird and come in various flavors, but presumably have Odium in there too. Nightblood was initially made with just those 1000 breaths, but he has substantially more Investiture now, and for RAFO reasons he has a lot of specifically Ruinous Investiture. Leading theory is that the nature of his Command (ie Destroy Evil) Forged a link to Ruin, though he may also be absorbing the Investiture of his victims. But the fact that Azures blade doesnt pop targets in all three Realms supports the idea that his Command is key to the puzzle. Nightblood was made on Nalthis and with just Breaths and 9th Heightening Awakening, but only after the Scholars in question traveled to Roshar and observed Shardblades; Nightblood was their attempt at recreating what they saw (WOB describes it as a "robot spren" and also a 3rd generation Shardblade, after Honorblades and the spren Shardbaldes). Vasher has figured out how to feed his Divine Breath with Sotrmlight so he doesnt need a store of Breaths to Survive week to week, but per WOB has not figured out how to perform Awakening with it. There is still a lingering question of what he does during the Weeping, since that's two weeks without a Storm and normal gems would be exhausted by then. Worst case he sneaks access to a Perfect Gem every year, or maybe he burns one breath a year, or makes a pilgrimage to Cultivation's Perpendicularity. Or, since there's a strong hint that the Nightwatcher got her hands on Nightblood at one point, he might have gotten a Boon to use Stormlight in some non-standard way like Lift.

Cool list! What is Nixium (a cobalt alloy presumably)? I cant find an actual metal named that online and was curious of the ratios. On that note the only Argentum Ive ever heard of is just the latin name for Silver, is there also an alloy?
-
Hmm, what type of Awakening would organic polymers take? We can make plastic lenses from some of those. On that note, I wonder if Nalthians would consider something like Coal to be organic or Mineral...
-
Feruchemy also has hard limits, for what it's worth, which I tend to assume (based on nothing) would be more or less in line with Duralumin which Ive always considered just slamming you up against that hard limit.

Theoretically if you hold enough Investiture of any source, you can Ascend. Note that this is distinct from actually becoming the Shard's Vessel, but it is int he right direction along that path. There have been a couple confirmed instances of Ascension while the Shard itself was still kept by it's Vessel. Separately though, some Shardic Intents are more comparable than others, so holding Investiture from multiple sources might be a hindrance more than a benefit. Mistborn Spoilers (Era 1 and 2):

Thank You Hmm, ok I think I see where you are going with this now. The issue Im seeing is that you are describing Duralumin more like how I would describe Flaring, whereas Dularumin would be more along the lines of the Instant-flush that you describe as coming from the Metalminds. I would agree that Flaring would be akin to the simple x2 multiplier that you show, but Duralumin is a lot closer to instant Burst burn already, is it not?
-
I still dont see the point, it would be a tragic waste of Feruchemcial Stores. Correct me if Im wrong, but given the apparent Exchange Rate between the two Sources as evidenced by normal Compounding, you'd have to store a metric F-ton of whichever feruchemcial trait to match even a little Allomancy, let alone Flairing. That could be overcome with standard Compounding sure, but then you going a really long way around to power Allomancy with more Allomancy. As a Second complication, I dont think we can yet Assume that Soulbearers can Tap their metalminds to get an Increase/multiplier on their Power. We have WOB that in Medallions at least the Abilities are stored as Whole things like Memories are in Copper. This heavily implies, but admittedly doesnt confirm, that normal Soulbearers will function similarly. So it may well not be possible to tap it as a Whole like that in a way that increases the physical effect. Now, if there were some weird set of circumstances that a compounded like this might be cut off from Preservation such that they can use their own Feruchemy but cannot access their own Allomancy, perhaps it would have some situational survival value, but I dont know of any way to cut somebody off in that way, even an aluminum box wont do it (given that Soulcasting works in one).
-
Well, the argument could be made that UnSealed Medallions are themselves an example of Feruchemy "Enhancing" Allomancy. We know that you can Enhance Allomancy by doubling up on a given power Via Hemalurgy, or with simple Flaring, so I think there's a reasonable possibility you could similarly Double Up with Medallions (or possibly even as a standard ability of a Soulbearer tapping multiple reserves). But to my mind that would still fall short of Reverse-Compounding. The whole Hack of Compounding is about finding a Shardic source of Power for abilities that are normally limited by the Persons own natural Investiture; The WOB analogy is that feruchemy is a battery powered gizmo being plugged into the Mains power grid. Even if the reverse is possible, that would be powering a large appliance with a much weaker Battery Power, and I struggle to see the point of that. SImilarly, any UnSealed Allomantic could arguably be an example of Allomancy being Fueled by Feruchemy, but it doesnt make you more Powerful in that trait.

Is it possible for a metal to function in only one of the Three Metallic Arts
Quantus replied to Quantus's question in Cosmere Q&A
Oh, ya I see your point, and in that light I tend to agree. So natural the follow-up question is what sort of Connection would be required, and how might one achieve it. Would a Connection to Scadrial alone do it (hemalurgic or feruchemical), as opposed to full Nicrosil MEdallion that sidesteps the whole question? Would it require a more permanent ReWiring of the spiritweb (aka like the theoretical Bavadinium/Lerasium alloy case)? Would you simply have to awaken some sort of Ruinous Investiture within yourself, and not need an specifically Scadrian Connection? Might utilizing Hemalurgy on yourself provide enough Invested Ruin in your spiritweb? -
Is it possible for a metal to function in only one of the Three Metallic Arts
Quantus replied to Quantus's question in Cosmere Q&A
Old but directly answers it I think. There will still be some shenanigans with the God-metals ("All God-metals each also do something else"?!?). The case of Aitum I think a non-native would be able to use it once their sDNA had the allomantic bits, on the logic that Atium (uniquely) doesnt actually require the same Conduit to Preservation and is fueled by the physical god-metal Investiture itself. So, while we're on the topic, if the Godly metals each "also" do something else, what could that be? Atium grants access to a Fortune effect and direct glimpse of the Spiritual when flaired, is that it's additional ability over it's "normal" uses? Is this referring to Lerasium's supposed ability to hack a person's spiritweb into other magics? -
For what it's worth, I still dont see how that could be possible based on the WOBs we have, but I guess we'll just have to wait for some new piece of clarifying information.
-
Maybe, but I suspect it could look different since it Regrowth can target external folks (and is generally a heavy Investiture user typcial of surges), while Feruchemy normally is too much your own natural investiture to even warp the spiritweb like that, apparently it takes extreme compounding to overcome that.
-
No actually, what are you referring to? I thought the only known path to reproducing spren was that whole wierd go into the Storm find one deal that seems to have been the way since the Stormfather took over, though that's sapient spren that certainly might be different.
-
Id say it's at least cutting a starfish in half. Its probably not a full sentient spren but it's still alive and presumably able to feel pain (or the nerve-free spren equivalent).
-
I know this is a bit off-topic being a Rosharan question, but if Soulcasting via Fabrial will so often lead to Savantism, I tend to think other Surge-mimicking Fabirals would as well. What would Regrowth Savantism look like?
-
Nope, there are fundamental differences between a Divine Breathe and a store of normal Breaths. Both give you the benefits of the 5th Heightening, but things like the Shapeshifting and the ability to do the Return's Suyper-Healing are unique to the Divine Breath, which is a Splinter of Endowment herself that was used to staple the Returned soul back onto their body as a Cognitive Shadow.
-
D'oh, of course, excellent point! Wow, now I really want to see what a Spanreed spren looks like in Shadesmar, splitting their Gem suddenly sounds a little horrific. Yup, if it's perfect enough to hold stormlight indefinitely, it's perfect enough to imprison even a sentient Spren like the Unmade.
-
Probably not unless he learned to Soulcasting. Those are the effect of Soulcasting Savantism specifically because those are the actual Investiture process that are being overused, and are thus the specific stresses that are warping the Spiritweb. Wax's current abilities are being recast as skill-based rather than savantism, so Im not sure what new direction we'll see Allomantic savantism take. If I had to arbitrarily guess how a Steel-push might become antagonistic as compared to Tin, Id say he may loose the ability complete turn off his Steel-push bubble. Or perhaps he will have increasing difficulty with the electrical devices that are emerging, by unconsciously radiating a sort of interference.

Ah, fair enough. I though the Singers invadin Urithiru had come from one of the other city's I would assume the Prison was the Kings Drop that he wanted kept away from the Radiants. Since it can activate an Oathgate, I would presume that the Honorblade would have been able to re-seal it int he "normal" way. Well, if they are like other lesser Fabrials the Gems are where the Spren would actually reside, so recovering them recovers those special-seeming spren. But if the gems were damaged/compromised the spren might be lost.
-
Im thinking there is literally No chance of "non-Harmful" Savantism, but only because Brandon has said specifically that he is unhappy with how Savantism has been falling and he intends to rework it a bit to ensure that there is always a harmful downside. So I expect the any Limits that are revealed in the future to be more along the lines of Rosharan Soulcasting Savants where they loose themselves in the Power and die.
-
Well, I guess I cant say it's impossible but it would be the very first example of a Spren capable of bi-locating in the Cognitive Realm. We know for a fact it's impossible in the Physical Realm (ie all those dual-wielding conversations), and we know Distance remains relevant in the cognative to the point that Blade summoning can have distance-based delays. So I doubt it.

Voting area for Scelomancer magic system
Quantus replied to Aragorn the Wyrmspeaker's topic in Creator's Corner
#1: Id say stick with gravity manipulation, the physics of it are a lot more straight-forward than the Higgs Field explanations that Ironminds eventually necessitated, and from a practical standpoint Lashing-style can do both. #2: That will open up a whole can of worms, it turns the humanoid species that has successfully crossbred with humans into a full on Spirit-entity. Having such a thing would be ok though it opens up spirit world questions and levels of Sentience and a lot of complex world and storybuilding that you mat not want to bite off yet. But the Scelce already have a place in the settling, if you want spirits make them something else. To compare to Roshar you have you fabrial users (mages), your Radiant Surge Users (Scelsi), and you surge using Singers (Scec'ar). Adding a Spren equivalent would be fine, but I wouldnt try to combine it with one of the others.- 4 replies

She only corrupted the Oathgate in Alethkar, which if Im not mistaken was uninvolved with that maneuver.

I remember replying to this, but the conversation has been scrambled across multiple threads so I have know idea where it landed. To your question, in looking for it I wasnt able to find anything to support the idea, so scrap that idea. I think it came from how the Stormfather said that the heralds where the first of their powers and all the names and organizations came later. But that's buried in the spren/radiant perspective, and those early Dawnshard scraps sure imply that the Singers were already aware of Surges when the Humans arrived.
