  1. Ok, i've made a separate topic for the Caton. Please post your ideas/pics/suggestions there Also, for Thor: well, yeah, maybe you can take that over, and maybe, with enough mental fortitude you can protect oneself somewhat.. But you still has to see THAT coming and react in time I am guessing that seeing a cat with 261 spikes will send most people in shock, and with the speed boosting trick, that will be enough time for the Kat to pwn you completely. Also, we don't know what those powers are, and where to get mistings for them so let us limit ourselves for now.. but leave enough space on the body for the additions [EDIT] More on topic. I think that, judging from the wording, the Investiture in this case is "the status of being filled with part of the Shards power", that is, using a certain ability in case of allomancy. In such case, storing it would work like this : you are burning metal, but not getting any effects. Then you can get a lot of effects at once, or control the rate much better than you would with just burning. Same for the shardblades: they contain a small piece of shards power in them, in effect using it constantly, and thus are Invested, and the same for Breath- you infuse something with the Shards power forcing it to use it. Yet allomancer is only Invested when he/she is burning something.
  2. Right. so this topic started here: Feruchemy Revealed, and seemed to generate a lot of resonance, so I thought a separate topic would be welcome.. Feel free to delete it, if that is not so. Summary: I have proposed the possibility of creating a sentient cat-inquisitor by using Hemalurgy to transfer aspects of sentience. Kurkistan has supported the idea, and joined the ranks of (yet unnamed) organization. Soother has expressed some disturbance with the idea, yet joined. Kurkistan has proposed a name "Caton of Inquisition" for the organization, so that will be used unless there is a better idea. I have designated myself as a head researcher of the Caton (And one of very few (or only) human members, since it is unfortunately necessary for the first Cat to be made by human, and taught how to make others. I have also proposed the idea for the initial spike distribution. In this thread, I propose to gather the ideas/opinions related to the Caton, possibly short stores of the deeds performed by the SpyKats (name under consideration... this one is kinda weird), additional spikes, etc. Also, try to keep (more or less) to the canonical, or at least theorized abilities. Ok, I start My assumptions/ theories: 1. What can be stored (Feruchemically), can be stolen. (see above topic) 2. Atium steals the whole spirit web. The effects only vary by the bind point. 3. Sense of identity, etc, applied to an animal can give sentience. Possibly enough of the connection to preservation given by any spikes can give sentience, but unknown. 4. Pieces of other shards (abilities from other worlds) can also be stolen, if the victim happens to be on Scadrial, or possibly by a Scadrial person. 5. Feruchemy + allomancy can give the effect of positive feedback, increasing feruchemical power drawn from burned metal, limited to the size of metal (in stomach) for the upper power output and duration. 6. Together, the above theories+cats= AWESOME. Now, something like fanart, i guess. I can't write a story worth rust, but still.. Here goes: (POV: unnamed cat-inquisitor) He perched on the rooftop above the dark alleyway, burning tin. In combination with his originally sensitive hearing, this allowed him to hear everything going on in this poor quarter of the city, which at the moment was nothing. Nothing interesting, at any rate. He sighed, bored. His increased concentration, along with wakefulness tapped from his bronzemind, allowed him to keep vigilant, but that did not mean that he enjoyed that. Unfortunately, they have drawn too much on the city resources in their hurry to create more brothers and sisters, and the crime rate in the city has dropped drastically. Unfortunately, he could not even seriously consider going after more lawful citizens for the necessary powers without waves of pain radiating from the sapphire-capped spike in his side, where the honorspren smuggled from Roshar was kept. His aditional power was based on Honor, so any deviation from honorable path, such as considering breaking his oath, weakened the connection, making the hemalurgy charge less effective, and the spike more harmful to his body. Brothers with the Odium-based powers were much better at wreaking havoc... which was the very reason he, and not one of them was chosen for this mission. His contemplation was interrupted by the sounds of struggle on the very edge of his enhanced hearing. He concentrated, drawing some additional hearing from a small ring on his hind paw. There was no doubt - a mugging was in progress. He will have a prey today, after all. Flaring pewter, he sprang in the direction of the sound. He leaped from one rooftop to the other, sometimes skipping several houses in a row. He barely needed pewter, really - five spikes transferring almost whole strength of a human gave more than enough power to lift his 20-kilo body as it were, but he liked the rush. There -now he could see a mugger, as well as his victim. What is more, his improved Ironsight showed a thick line pointing to the mugger's stomach, making him an allomancer, most probably a Thug. The victim was alive, which was well, but conscious, which was not, since the existence of Caton had to be kept secret.. for now, and his oaths prohibited him from just removing witnesses. He slunk carefully to the edge of the roof, and started filling the Duralumin metalmind with all the strength he could muster, reducing human awareness of him, and flared a Chromium metalmind, drawing inordinate amounts of Fortune in a single burst. An ordinary cat, hidden before that time in the shadows, happened to choose that moment to chase something, causing the heap of trash to collapse. The sudden sound and movement has distracted both victim and the criminal, allowing him to pull the hapless thug by a single massive ironpull coupled with the additional wights drawn from the ironmind being burned, focused on the knife he was using to subdue the victim. Drawing attributed from steel and zincminds, he quickly slapped his prey on the precise spots on the neck, rendering him unconscious before he could realize what happened, or the victim could turn around. Still drawing speed, he released Zincmind, and started drawing stored strength, increasing in bulk just enough so that he could balance his prey on his back, he bounded away. "Not much for me to do here", a voice complained in his mind, originating from the sheath on his side, where a small obsidian axe encrusted with infused gemstones was hidden from sight. The weapon was a first experiment, successfully recreating the process used to make the famous Nightblood, and given the command to obey him, and only him absolutely. He was required to have it with him at all times "to study the development of the intelligence", as head R&D guy has put it, but it still has not seen battle, and chafed for it. Come to think of it, he was bored as well, and since today's prey has filled his criminal quota for this month... "Don't worry", he thought back at it, "A nice vacation on Roshar will give you plenty to do, and soon. Very soon." P.S. The story is mainly intended as a showcase for powers *sigh*, but still...
  3. You people forget several things 1. The spikes do not have to be very large.. or rod-shaped for that matter. You can make an armor spiked on the inside, you can implant mini-spikes along bones (as long as they pierce muscle a little), hemalurgic teeth and scull (like Kurkistan's avatar probably has), although the bind points have to be considered.. Also, why limit oneself to paltry 33 spikes? Let's see: 2 spikes for each allomantic power (for the boost, coppercloud piercing, etc)(32), 2 for each Feruchemy power (same reasons)(32), 5 for strength (i want my cat stronger than a Koloss!), at least 7 for intelligence (I want a cat smarter than a Koloss, you know), say, 2 for identity (I am guessing that will have with sanity issues some. I am also assuming that what can be stored can be stolen, and that is large assumption), and, say, around 13 other spikes for other attributes (endurance, regeneration, breath holding, sense enhancement, what have you),and let us not forget 1 (yes, only one. No need to have 2, since I want to preserve normal sight too) steel (i think) spike for Ironsight. That will give .. let us see.. around 92 people killed for one walking Cat of pure AWESOME. Bring on the SpiKat! P.S For additional awesomeness, using only Atium and , possibly, Lerasium spikes is preferred. (We know that Atium can steal all powers). P.P.S. Brandon must know about this idea. Let us all beg him to include the Great Caton of Inquisition in the sequel! [EDIT] This seems to go off topic. I think I'll just make another thread devoted to the Cat Inquisitors in Mistborn.
  4. Or you could handwave it by saying that mean individuals physically hugging the Smoker, which is why nobody noticed the effects before To Sunblesser: Hemalurgy is not evil, it is an opportunity for honorable self-sacrifice (among other things). Also, we don't know if it is possible to steal only part of the power by inflicting a non-lethal wound in a specific place. Blood, as mentioned by Marsh, has to be involved, but it is unknown about death. Maybe it is like Breath in Warbreaker - most people only manipulate integer amounts, but Vasher had once used something that semmed like a part-breath to remove memories. Likewise, the known Hemalurgy takes everything (whole ability/ set), and then loses it gradually until fixed in place, but there is no telling if it is limited to that. (As an aside, I have always wondered if is was possible to transfer sentience with it. We know that it can be used on animals, so maybe a proper application will result in a sentient Mistborn/Feruchemist superstorng cat-Inquisitor).

  6. 1) - Nah, the pools are kiddie-sized. 2) They are filed with a special solution that delivers ATP directly into your cells. No oxygen necessary So no lifeguards.
  7. Bah. It is well known that Brandon is Hoid, aka Alcatraz, The Brains of Adolnasium. Are you telling us that his factual account of the events leading to the fall of the Final Empire has been corrupted by something as lowly as 'force of plot'?
  8. Ok, to clarify: Lord Ruler can do this: The inquisitor can see all metals inside your body, but cannot affect them. Boosted Vin can see and affect them (excepting ones in the stomach). This does not mesh well with the fact that seeing the steel lines usually allows one to interact with them (unless they are too small, perhaps).
  9. One might note, that when Vin was burning mists, she also only saw two lines: . So she still only sees large pieces of metal, not on the molecular level.Yet, from Kar's POV: He refers to his powers as "given", and thinks that he sees with his eyes.So this may imply that the powers appeared after he was made inquisitor, rather than developed over time. Of course, it may be that spikes through the eye grant an instant savant status. Hm. BTW, does that mean that using duralumin would blind inquisitor by depleting his iron/steel? (Maybe they did not even have that power. I mean, how would one find an Duralumin gnat, anyways?). That still does not explain why they see metals inside bodies , but cannot pull on them. I mean, ok, savant status gives you sensitivity and detail. That is easy to agree with. High power gives you ability to sense metals in bodies and interact with them. But inquisitors obviously only have half of the second ability. Also, Zane, who has powered steel, does not seem to be able to sense metals in bodies like Vin pierces copperclouds. And one more thing I have just notices about TLR: from the above quote: "Two new lines appeared.". Where is the third line? Two lines for two bracelets, ok. But if he was burning metals, he should have had some inside him, which should have been revealed by preservation-powered Vin. Yet it did not. Why? Digested metals don't really work - so he should have had at least flakes in around the same place (stomach), but they did not show. That may be explained by very small flakes, maybe, but it still strikes me as strange. [EDIT] Come to think of it, we know little about TLR's abilities beyond obvious. For example: his actual age was around 1000 yo. Yet when Vin saw him charging his youth (supposedly) he looked.. well, not that old. So, was he charging oe atiummind while draining another? If that is possible, why did he bother getting older at all? Also, I don't think Feruchemist can drain metalmind while sleeping (not sure about that). So, did he sleep? Or did he use the same trick for wakefullness to stay awake forever (for a 1000 years)? Or is it, after all, possible to drain metalmind at precise rate while sleeping? (Pewter is, for example, just burned automatically, and the rate is stable for a person on a standard burn. Yet metalmind can be drained at any rate.) Sorry for a long post.
  10. Well.. this does not seem to fit, since they rely on this ability to see since their making, before they could get savantism. Does that mean that for a while, they are largely blind? Also, why do you think they have more steel ability (can you quote this)? And even then, why cant they push or pull this metal, but only see it? If they have increased ability that penetrates body protection, they should be able to push it, as well, and they never do.
  11. Here, from Sazed's: So - there is a limit of power. It does not mention size, but there probably is correlation similar to feruchemy. Yet, IMO, the limit is rather high - so, for example, Vin's earring may be able to store Bronze ability of one person (or somewhat less, due to decay), just barely enough to give her piercing ability, while the Inquisitor's spikes can potentially hold much more power, but do not, usually, since that would require killing several people at once (or in succession) , which they seemed not to do. Also, some inquisitor powers are strange (their sight feels like they not only burn steel constantly, but also have the ability to see metal inside bodies, yet i doubt they actually burn metal for this, and they cannot pull/push it), and may require spikes piercing specific larger areas. [EDIT]: If what Zas says is true (about leaking), and if the leakage is exponential (the more charge the faster), then there is an upper limit to charge essentially given by equilibrium between leakage (which happens even when driven directly into a body) and accumulated charge. This limit will then depend on size.

  13. Wait, what you say is, if I don't have an ARC, but PM you that I do, you'll let me look at it?
  14. Ok.. So, if i understand correctly, Hemalurgy steals pieces of sDNA and staples them to other people. Does it mean that it may steal, say, Surgebinding abilities or Breath? (If used by the person from Scadrial)?
  15. I wonder if a Nicrosil misting could kill TRL while he was burning atium to replenish his youth storage. Imagine: a Nicrosil misting touches TLR , bursting his youth production to the level when the excess youth goes into him, rather than his bracers - TLR becomes a Zygote on the spot and dies horribly... Probably impossible, but a nice image. As for the spikes/organs: It was said somewhere (probably in annotations) that the physiology of a spiked being does change, so the vital organs are displaced. I don't think it is instant, though. The spike does go through the brain/heart, and, if it has Hemalurgic charge it does not kill (usually), but may give some power if placed correctly, or nothing,if placed wrongly or is nearly discharged. The spirit of the being (or part of it, captured in spike) becomes stapled to the recipient's soul. The spike starts to change physiology afterwards. Some spikes become vital organs by themselves: removing them kills instantly. Others are redundant, like eye spikes of the Inquisitor - removing one does ot kill, removing two does. Yet others, like Vin's earring are easily removable without adverse effect (excepting the power loss). The physiology change varies with spike, placement and stolen power (I assume), resulting in : gross (external) disfigurement (Koloss, spikes steal human strength), sentience (possibly specific to Kandra), and/or a lot of internal changes (Heart/brain displacement, etc) but few(er) external: Inquisitors. Some physiology changes may lead to death in the long run (again, Koloss), because they are not balanced (strength/ body mass without increasing heart endurance proportionally). It is implied that the spike must pierce something in order to work: , so I assume that the changes take place afterwards, with survival being dependant on the additional soul attached, rather than intact organs. As for the TLR strength - I concur that he probably boosted himself, at least somewhat, by the power in the well, when he was rebuilding the world. By the way, could anybody remind me, who were the original Allomancers? They were not terrismen (became Kandra), but why would Rashek give power to companions of Alendi? He seemed to dislike them...
  16. To Tortellini: My thoughts exactly. There may be some connection between Chasmfiends and Voidbringers, but Thunderclasts are not it. To recap my opinion: Thunderclasts: golems created/summoned by Voidbinding, Chasmfiends - just greatshells that may or may not be tamed/used by voidbringers during Desolations.
  17. Oops, my bad. I have confused Luthadel with Elendel. Well, Brandon has apparently explicitly stated that Harmony/Sazed does not have a pool (see first post), so the explanation may be that he has just concentrated more on the region he put humans onto (I assume Elendel was founded around where the storage caverns have ended up), resulting in a region better suited for habitation.
  18. To: Darniil. Well, the pool being the place where the power of Preservation is concentrating, it makes sense that surrounding area would feel some effects from it (like Preserving nutrients, etc). It may also be the reason the mists went out of control the slowest there: the excess power may have been drained into the pool, for a time at least.
  19. I don't remember it ever said which color the eyes become after taking shardblade. It is mentioned that they become light, but that is it. Maybe green becomes blue when losing pigment? Or maybe different Shardblades give different eye colors?
  20. Hm.. it seems that Pits of Hathsin did produce something liquid: And yet, the Ruins mind was not there - it was trapped near the Well, and in the Pits there was only a part of his body coalescing into Atium. The atium was specifically called the body of the God by Sazed, too. Also, the Ruin pools were not a natural formation - they were made by Preservation to siphon part of Ruins power: So it would seem to me that the pools are not directly connected to the Cognitive aspect of a Shard, and are, in fact just an outlet absorbing and producing the Shards body in specific (liquid or solid) form. Also, the Pools are created by the Shards (not necessary the same ones that hold the specific body), for some purpose. In case of Well of Ascension, here is Sazeds theory: . The purpose of the Pits is noted above. The pool in Elantris is unknown, but maybe it was some means of communication, or even a power recycle factory (unlikely). So, Sazed as Harmony does not have pools, because he does not want to, and has no one to force him. Whether Honor has a pool is unknown.
  21. Hm.. they are Shamans, and have something to do with souls, right? .So I thought: AFAIK, the shardblades are stored in the Spritual Realm. Maybe the shamans can access this realm, and actually steal the Shardblade (only this one, or maybe even any one), regardless of its physical location. As for his punishment :you are right, he was given the thing, so they could not be punishing him for it. Could his Radiant nature have something to do with this? Maybe even like :"You are a Radiant Messiah! Take our sins and get out of the country with them."
  22. Hm.. The Thunderclast theory is possible, of course. Although I have always thought that being Truthless is somehow connected to the Shardblade: the worst caste? status? for the strongest weapon. Maybe he picked up the weapon to kill the said Thunderclast, and was later punished for it (It seems that thunderclasts are almost impossible to kill otherwise). By the way, why would he reduce it to rubble? Also, this part: may suggest that he was not familiar with Thunderclasts directly, although this is ambiguous.
  23. By the way, are these all Alethi letters, or are there more? Also, how do you write soft consonants and/or vowels? (Kinda want to try writing my name...)
  24. To Sir_Read-a-lot: So that is where the picture were. Thanks! #3- Exactly what i was saying. #4,5,6 - That is an interesting and plausible theories. Although i wonder how that meshes with the possibilities of Parshendi being Voidbringers. Maybe they just bring Void as opposed to actively using it. Also, insofar as their tactics is concerned, they seem to mimic Alethi almost exactly. I wonder if that is a kind of Honor or there is another reason.
  25. Hm.. Maybe.. From Kaladin's time out it looked as if the appearance of the face was related to the charge somehow: At least it was charged instantly at the same time the face appeared. My guess would be more "Facial shockwave" (the same shockwave that carries the face also carries concentrated stormlight) than lightning, but we just do not know enough. For all we know, the chasmfiends may morph into the Unmade in the end. I still think they become like this: Shallan sketch that was sent to Dalinar (sorry about ripping an image out of ebook), which we know looks kinda like chasmfiend. But we'll just have to wait and see. Probably Brandon will surprise us anyway. P.S.: I have seen a 'walking stick'. Always thought of it as spindly rather than skeletal, though. But then, I DID learn English by reading WOT without dictionary, so I am no expert.
