I'm pretty sure the First Ideal is "Stick before fire."

In chess players are also often considering different moves based on how their opponent moves, which is pretty much how Vin learnt to beat Atium burners.
-
What he said was that Shallan had "already said the words" but as Lightweavers only have one ideal that doesn't mean much. In order to restore and progress her bond with Pattern Shallan had to speak truths instead. Much like how Kaladin restored Syl by speaking a new ideal rather than just repeating his existing ones.

Surgebinders existed but supposedly the KR were founded after Nohadon had written The Way of Kings since they took their inspiration from it. But the point about Desolations stands since if Dalinar's interpretation of his vision is to be believed Nohadon's great deeds took place following a Desolation that killed 9/10s of the human population.

I also find it pretty weird that rubies and sapphires have such different properties when you consider that they're basically the same physically - a ruby just having a slight impurity that causes the colour to be different than a sapphire.
-
The Stormfather said that Dalinar will be without Shards, so I assume he is not going to get any new Shardplate.

Wouldn't the Lord Ruler be a more powerful Compounder than Miles in the same way that Elend was a more powerful Allomancer than the other Mistborns, since their powers come direct from the source rather than diluted through the generations?

My feeling, which admittedly is just instinct at this point, is that Joel is a Rithmatist in waiting - that the Shadowblaze recognised his potential but deliberately held off from giving him the powers. It reminds me of the end of a book called Paladin of Souls in which the main character loses her powers and ends up being captured as a result, only for her divine patron to restore her sainthood at exactly the moment when it would be the most useful. Joel might just be more useful as a normal human right now than as a Rithmatist in terms of the greater goals.

The problem with that would seem to be that lots of people are liars on Roshar without seeing Cryptics. Now it could be that Elhokar has something of Rock's ability to see hidden spren, or something else entirely could be going on, but I don't think it makes sense for the explanation to be as simple as Elhokar being a liar.
-
I found myself wondering this as well, though I think it was set off by a different line in the same conversation. I don't think that it necessarily has anything to do with her desire to be a scholar, though.

I was actually thinking less of fighting and more of just travelling to the battlefield. Szeth flew all over the world with his Honourblade that is less efficient than an actual Windrunner's Surgebinding, and we've already had Kaladin fly halfway across the Shattered Plains and intending to fly to Heathstone,
-
It makes perfect sense that a Windrunner would be able to transport their Squires, by the way. After all what's the point of having Squires if they can't effectively follow you into battle?
-
The only difference we know between them is the way in which Shallan and Elhokar have been observing them. But I doubt Lightweavers are limited solely to visual artists, so capturing them on paper probably isn't the only way to observe them. Of course without the WoB we can't say for certain that they are Cryptics either.
-
Hmm... Well, even so the difference is the same as Kaladin before he actually swore any ideals and him after he swore the first. Actually it's not even that much since he used proto-Windrunning to kill Heleram. The thing that makes it weird to me is that Lopen was (and probably some of the others were) practising inhaling Stormlight with no effects whatsoever. The gems didn't go dun and Lopen's arm didn't start growing back until Kaladin hit the Third Ideal. Perhaps the way it works is that before the Third Ideal the bridgemen couldn't take in Stormlight themselves but instead they would receive a small portion of it from Kaladin whenever he inhaled some.
-
I like it. I think it might sound better as "I will guide those who cannot see" but it's still pretty good. Something along those lines might be a Truthwatcher ideal, since they have Lightweaving and what might be a predictive surge.

Forgive me for thinking that actually being a schizophrenic might make me better suited to identifying if a fictional character shares my illness or not. I guess my lack of evidence just can't stand up against the overwhelming amount of evidence you put forward.
-
Well Kaladin has flown off to Hearthstone so if it is a case of Honourspren chasing off non-bonded Cryptics that should have stopped. But there's the fact that Elhokar wants to learn from Kaladin, so it's possible that his attempts to be honourable will preclude him from becoming a Lightweaver. Besides I don't think truths do you any good unless you've said the First Ideal. Lightweavers only have the one ideal but Pattern says that Shallan still had to say the words when she was a child to form the bond in the first place.
-
Hmmm... Secretspren? If a liespren likes lies which are truths, does a secretspren like secrets which are hidden in the open? Like hiding your Soulcasting powers by pretending to have a Soulcasting fabrial?
-
Well one person can apparently bond multiple spren, so it wouldn't necessarily be out of the question for one spren to bond multiple people. And the Stormfather is hardly a typical spren.

As a schizophrenic I'm going to say... no.
-
Well a bond isn't just one way, or else Kaladin wouldn't have been able to force it and "kill" Syl. Perhaps Dalinar actually created the bond with the Stormfather after they came into contact. Or perhaps the visions are actually only possible thanks to a proto-bond between the seer and the Stormfather, and Dalinar merely progressed what already existed when he figured this out. It probably comes down to the type of spren.
-
The real twist is that Taravangian is both champions - Odium when smart, Honour when compassionate.
-
I wonder if spren are like icebergs.
-
I wonder if Jasnah just never had to worry about money and so was inclined to dismiss Sebarial because he's a businessman. He should really be Highprince of Commerce.
-
What makes you think that there isn't exactly that throne in the Cognitive Realm? If Shallan ever goes and talks to the knife she's in for a surprise.
