The recording cuts off at exactly 8:00, while the reading is still going. A tragic case of missing audio on the recording side, or a mistake in the upload?

As to the book's author, I can see Spook, now that you mention it. But the book almost has to be the one that Marsh gave to Marasi, what with Conservation of Detail, so I guess he got it from Spook? Actually, now that I think of it, Marsh might have a bit of trouble, you know, writing/reading things, what with his lack of eyes. Though I suppose he could you metal-enriched ink...

I suppose "foci" could be interpreted as a talking about the specialties and predilections of the Shards, rather than their "focuses" in the Realmatic sense.

Is the Shadows of Self reading about the part with Steris planning out which of Wax's foes to invite to the wedding? If so, that's been transcribed/recorded here. I'm fairly sure that book is Marsh's, btw. The one he gave Marasi at the end of AoL? It seems to be the obvious assumption. Thanks for the report either way; can't wait for the WoR reading.

I think they're universal, though my version is the US Kindle eBook. Just keep going after the last chapter; they should be there. They're also listed in the table of contents.

KChan... *eye twitch* I feel compelled to pewterarm myself through a wall, and yet find I have no capability to do so in an internet-related-setting. *eye twitch* It is beginning to wear on me...

Oops, sorry; to admit a grave sin, I haven't read the whole thread yet. I posted my snooty "post the original quote" just before going to bed, then skimmed and saw Windrunner's point first thing after booting up my computer. I tagged the thread as a whole as "read in a leisurely manner later", but I suppose I suffered from that since I was posting before reading it in its entirety.

As the most vocal representative of "a lot of people", I would like to note that I have no problem with Breath being "from" Endowment in the same way that the spark of sentience in Scadrians is "from" Preservation. Despite this, I would argue that it is intrinsically part of who they are, not some grafted-on extra bit that makes every "normal" Nalthian an ubermensch. Breath, then, is just a small portion of the normal power of someone's normal soul, which soul, in its entirety, is "of Endowment" in a real, but not entirely direct sense.

Ooh, good one.

It's always best to include the full quote and link, Senor. Link Carry on.

Oh no, you should feel bad (and I haven't been able to post this picture in a while ) I disagree with your "sparkplug" interpretation of "spark". If that were the case, it seems that you could use Hemalurgy to grant intelligence to a cat (one of the last things you'd ever do ), and then withdraw the spike and still have a sentient cat. Hemalurgy's boons go away when you remove the spikes--when you take away what they've grafted into the spiritweb--so the removal of Innate Investiture from your spirit should have similar effects, as opposed to there being some ontological inertia of sentience. As for the "how" of the thing, if you buy the general form of Windy's argumentation, you could posit that Innate Investiture gives humans a "form receptive to sentience" or some such for an explanation of why the constant presence of Innate Investiture is necessary.

Fear the Mistborn burning Atrium! For he wields the awesome power of enabling public assembly in a well lit indoor space!

You can, but that is not a very natural interpretation. Also, the context of the interceding "Brandon Sanderson Hmm, yes…I suppose there would be but there are… 17TH SHARD More than sixteen?" makes it seem that Brandon didn't have the number off the top of his head, suggesting it wasn't something so simple as 32. Now if we're still in my patented Denial Mode, we can say that there are 16 atium-normal alloys, 1 atium-lerasium alloy, 16 atium-lerasium-normal alloys, and 16 lerasium-normal alloys, for a total of 49. That number doesn't exactly roll of the top of your head, and comes about due to some odd arithmetic, so he might have had to take a moment to think about it, rather than simply multiplying 16 by 2 as you suggest. EDIT: Then you have to decide if an alloy counts if it doesn't have a real Allomantic effect, and so on.

Why shardblades don't cut each others?
Kurkistan replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
So far as damaging Shardplate goes, something magical is going on there. Dalinar makes specific mention of how little heft Shardblades have, telling us that, if Blades simply acted like swords when encountering Plate, they would act like exceptionally puny swords that did little damage. It takes innumerable solid hits from conventional weapons to damage Plate appreciably, with even exceptionally high falls doing comparatively little damage, suggesting an absurd threshold for physical trauma. Shadblades, however, can destroy a piece of plate after two solid hits. Something special is happening. -
Update on the transcription: Poor WeiryWriter has worked his fingers off to get to 25:00, and I proof-read him up to the beginning of the Legion reading. Anyone who wants to jump in and do a good deed would be more than welcome.

We know that Splinters can have their own Intents, so that implies that those Intents are unique, i.e. not copies of their parent's. -
Please tell me for the sake of hilarity that that was meant to be meta.

A fair point. Still, it demands that Brandon have made a mistake of some kind...
-
Brass does melt at about 900-1000 degrees Celsius, so you might want some embedded spikes if you really want to go all out.
-
Hmm. I tend to be wrong when I assume Brandon made a mistake in his worldbuilding, so I'm still going to say that, if the only other option is contradiction, you can (charitably) interpret that quote as "for each metal" meaning just misting-creation for Lerasium (including atium-alloy mistings and Sazedium ferings, presumably) and, for atium, including atium alloys with other god metals at the same time as base metals.
-
Those statements combined don't demand that the number of atium alloys be in flux. atium + 16 atium alloys + 16 Lerasium alloys + 16 normal metals = 49 atium + 16 atium alloys + 16 Sazedium alloys + 16 normal metals = 49 atium + 16 atium alloys + 16 ????ium alloys + 16 normal metals = 49 If the second set of 16 is somehow alloyed with atium (Sazedium, perhaps?) then we get a neat little answer to the ambiguity. In order to stay beneath the "50 roof", we have to assume the base metal for the second set isn't properly allomantic by itself, which also works if Sazedium makes Feruchemists. Actually, assuming Brandon never misspoke, this essentially tells us that Sazedium exists as an alloy of Atium and <something> (almost certainly Lerasium), isn't a proper allomantic metal by itself, and can be alloyed with the 16 base metals for allomantic effects. EDIT; Realized I'd misread the evidence, then that I still had a valid point to make, so did some significant changery.
-
I'm fairly sure that's and inclusive "and", though, so temporality probably needs to be included somehow.
-
You could try alloying it with some other metal, then separating them again. This answer suggests that there is a finite amount of space "in the metal" for the charges to be stored.

There are generally enough people with too much free time good hearts who will transcribe at least a bit, Windrunner, so it might be worth doing a 2.0 of Zas' transcription thread.
