MountainKing is misquoting a WoB. Brandon said that the first three will reasonably stand by themselves, but the fourth will really require you to read the others. That does not mean that Starsight is not a sequel; it obviously is, it's just Brandon means that it won't be a disaster if you didn't read Skyward first for it. Specifically:

Hi guys, looks like most ebook places are distributing Skyward now, so it's time for full book spoilers! Post them here. I didn't really like how the topic tags happened with Oathbringer, so I would say don't do that here but please do keep spoilers out of topic titles. So yeah, here we go! I hope you enjoyed it.

Badali Jewelry, makers of all sorts of amazing jewelry from the cosmere, from Stormlight, Mistborn, and Elantris, is having a fall sale until November 22nd. Not everything is on sale, but a lot is, from the Steel Alphabet rings we reported on, Aon pendants, Cosmere symbol pendants (which I am currently lusting about), and also some pins. There's a huge variety of things there. Be sure to check them out. We know this stuff can be a bit expensive, but just know that these items are extremely high quality. I love all three of the Aon pendants I have. These Jes and Shash pendants and pins look awesome, and I'd probably already have them if I wore pendants more. If you have any interest in these items, now is definitely the time to grab them. Aon pendants are regularly $57 with enamel and the ones on sale are $45. Most on sale items seem about $10 off, which is a big deal when they are regularly $50-$60. Some particular items that are not on sale, however, are Allomantic symbol earrings, which are also cool.

This week on Shardcast, not only do you get to continue getting some spicy Words of Brandon from the Legion release--which remind us of how crazy these weird stormstrider things are--but you also get some bonuses. That's right, you also get a special edition podcast of Tasercast, as well as Dresden Files Cast. Did we know where that would lead us today? Not even remotely. We also learn about Heralds and their bodies (which is a great sentence to say out of context), the classics of Gavilar's black spheres, and also... bears. This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and the TRAITOROUS Ben (Overlord Jebus) who tried to steal my podcast intro! The nerve! I am the evil overlord and Lord Ruler on this show, mister!

Stormlight Archive Kindle Editions on Sale
Chaos replied to Undead Wookiee's topic in Stormlight Archive
All Ebook retailers in the US and Canada! Do note also there's a bundle of all three for $7.18 too, which is ridiculous. -
This topic is not about discussing downvotes. Thanks!

So, apparently last week on Instagram (the... place for your book news?) Brandon posted that last week's batch of chapters would be the last of them. My apologies for being misinformed and getting your hopes up last week in the last release that you might get Chapter 17 today. Indeed, more chapters did not arrive this morning, but yesterday we did get a short bonus chapter, Chapter 15. That's all the preview chapters for Skyward, but don't worry, it comes out next Tuesday, November 6th!

Who's your spirit cosmere character? Who are you most like, on the inside? I'll begin. I'm totally Vasher. I'm a teacher, but sometimes I can be very grumpy about it.

I didn't know. I don't check Instagram for my Brandon Sanderson news because that's stupid. I don't go to a social network about photos for my book news. My apologies for misleading you all.

According to Instagram from last week, this is the last batch of chapters. Thanks Brandon for using friggin Instagram to get the word out rather the thing people actually follow you on (Twitter).

If you are looking for a new series to read, have you heard of this Brandon Sanderson guy? He writes some pretty great stuff. We're fans. Among his best and most popular is his Stormlight Archive series, and if you're in the US and Canada, you can get the first three books, The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, and Oathbringer for $2.99 a piece. This sale will end November 5th, but what a killer deal. Stormlight Archive books are long. If you read these first three, it'll be over a million words long. But you get rich characters, and rich worldbuilding. If you're interested, now's the absolute best time to grab these. In addition, a package of all three Stormlight books runs $7.18 on all retailers (such as Amazon and Google Play), which again, is absurd for the hours of entertainment you'll get from this. You'll spend less than a movie ticket, and you'll get some incredible books.

Thank you for all the kind words on my birthday. I'm kind of surprised as to whatever time zone this server is running on, because that appeared quite early on the 30th for me! But thank you all. It means a lot.

Must be a consequence to the HTTPS update. Something is wrong with HTTPS support on the IPS Content module (which this is on) that I guess I just need to do software updates to fix. That will not be soon at all. Any news page, this will not work on for the next while. I suppose I'll just need to hide the buttons in the meantime. Yes, we will, but do note that this was the Legion release. Though this episode was popular, and that's really great, we also want to balance other topics so Shardcast isn't just WoBcast. We are allotting three episodes of time to the Skyward tour. With that and the AMAs we'd really need to get all of them done in four episodes total and spread them out. Too many WoB episodes at a time is too much. That's why we did the last two Kholins episodes before airing this one and next week's.

You can just report the images and we can move them. I assume you'd like them in the Cosplay Photos category?

So, after doing this podcast I actually did work on some math regarding how long the Desolations period of Roshar would be, along with Pagerunner. The short answer is that the Desolation period basically has to be at least three thousand years, but could also be nearly five thousand or six thousand years. (That's the TL;DR, incoming long wall of text about math.) What data points can we use? We know that for the Last Desolation, the Heralds broke less than a year from the previous Desolation. For the purposes of math I said it was .5 years. We also have a quote from the Starfalls vision (Way of Kings Chapter 19), where a Radiant mentions what year it is: "It is Eighth Epoch, three thirty-seven." Now, that's very explicit. I can only assume what separates Epochs in this scenario are Desolations. I also assumed that this means it has been eight Desolations since the Heralds formed the Oathpact. So when t = 8, we had at least 337 years (with a Desolation coming soon, according to that vision). Since Brandon said "not much more than 15" Desolations, I looked at having 20 or 25 Desolations, so t = 20 would be .5 years. I thought it'd be a pretty nice exponential decay but curve sketching actually led to sums of the Desolation period always being a bit over 5000 years. We abandoned curve sketching pretty quick because that would have meant the first Desolation post-Oathpact would have taken nearly 700 years, if we got 337 years after 8. In the end, I made a quick spreadsheet where I just picked numbers to see what the lower bound on the timeframe of Desolations could be. I said every other Desolation before t = 8 would be exactly 300, and then I had the numbers drop off very rapidly after eight. Check out my poorly formatted spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1prORC7cmaPfyzR3O6RBYT5NtZRDEsmu_rG10oRaSQOI/edit?usp=sharing Don't take any numbers too seriously, but if you just map out the numbers like that, I really don't see how the Desolation period could be less than 3000 years, and it could be upwards of nearly 6000 years.

Today on Shardcast, there's yet more Words of Brandon, this time from the Legion release party, and boy do we have some real good ones. We get some actual, real-to-goodness confirmations about Nightblood, including some longstanding mysteries being discussed. It's exciting! This Word of Brandon episode is not one to miss. We also get upper and lower bounds on how many Desolations there are! Are you not entertained! Some theories are also destroyed in this one. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent, and head of Taln's fandom apparently), and joining late due to traffic is Ben (Jebus). We'll see you all next week for part two from the Legion release!

It's Wednesday, so you know what that means: more Skyward! This time we're back to three chapters, Chapters 12-14! As usual you'll need to scroll down to the newest stuff. One's a short chapter but this is still a meaty week for Skyward. Discuss it in our discussion topic! There's only one more week of Skyward previews left, because Skyward comes out November 6th! So, there's an interesting thing. Supposedly we will pick out what universe Skyward is in on Chapter 17, if we pay attention. (Skyward is in a universe of something Brandon wrote before, and is not cosmere.) Will we get Chapter 17 next week? If we get three chapters, we will see it!

Three chapters this week (but the first is short): https://www.getunderlined.com/read/excerpt-reveal-start-reading-skyward-by-brandon-sanderson/

It's the last bit of our "short," "surface-level," and "one-episode" series on the Kholins. We're finishing up Dalinar's family unit, and we have to talk about Adolin and Renarin and their family dynamics! And, of course, how it evolves after Dalinar's visit to the Valley or not. Guest starring: Kaves Kholin. This is also our 50th episode! How crazy is that? This week we have Eric (Chaos), Alyx (FeatherWriter), Shannon (Grey), and Joshua (jofwu). Don't worry, we'll have plenty more character discussion as we move along. We really did a criminally shallow look at things, and there's plenty more to do still. Next week, though, we're onto the Legion release Words of Brandon, and they are pretty spicy.

I don't think it's necessarily the worst. It's useful if someone missed everything about Skyward to be able to have it all in one spot. But yeah there are some downsides...
