Last time we talked mechanics about Enlightened Truthwatchers, but now let's talk about some character dynamics with Renarin and Rlain! We discuss representation, hopes for the future, with some book five thoughts as well! We also talk about possible oaths and Shardplate some too.

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Alyx (Feather), Grace (thegatorgirl), and Matt (Comatose). We also have Dalish who wanted to play Who's That Cosmere Character too.

See our previous episode on the Enlightened Truthwatchers here: https://youtu.be/qQaq9PWj4v8

I am sorry if it was mentioned somewhere in the shardcast, but has there ever been a confirmed relationship between a human and singer previously and is it even biologically possible for a singer and a human to birth a child?

They did long ago. Horneaters are Human-Singer hybrids.  https://coppermind.net/wiki/Unkalaki#Appearance_and_Anatomy

Herdazians are as well.  https://coppermind.net/wiki/Herdaz#People

Wow, how was I not aware of this? Were these just mentioned as WoBs and such (I am not super familiar with most WoBs), as I don't recall it ever even being hinted at in the books? Though now that I see it, it seems obvious. More so for the Horneaters than the Herdanzians though.

  • Renarin can’t have seen someone dying to the Chasmfiend, because no one (important) did. If he had, he’d have already known the visions weren’t “set in stone” and not despaired as much in Oathbringer about Jasnah.
  • At first I thought he bonded around the time he stopped wearing glasses. In WoR P260 is the last mention of him wearing them and P334 is the first without (also, that section starts out with him summoning his blade and freezing). But the first set of numbers happens on p80, which means Renarin had to have been bonded at that point. I don’t think he was bonded on tWoK (gut feeling here).

Yeah, you shouldn't feel bad for missing it. They are very lightly implied in text, but you'd have to make some leaps to connect it. Herdazians having extremely hard finger nails, like stone or carapace. The Horneaters have super strong jaws, the anatomy is different from humans, allowing them to chomp on the native carapaced creatures, as if they too were native to Roshar or had picked up some traits from humanoids who were.

Some things make more sense when you realize what the Horneaters are. Rock says they moved to live on the peaks because every hated them for being too good at fighting. Really it was that they were too Singer for the humans and too human for the Singers. Once the Desolations started neither side trusted them and they had to find an unassailable location to retreat to.

During the WTCC:
Grace: "This character is actively hunted by the government."
Ian: "Oh."
Eric: "Oh."
Alyx: "Oh."
Dalish: "Oh."

Also, this episode made me think about where all of the characters will be in the back five, and I am so excited. In my mind, Renarin and Rlain will be the power couple at the center of Urithiru's intelligence network, working together to analyze and take advantage of all of the information from Shallan and Radiant's vast spy network (yes, I want them both around; Radiant can handle the administrative side of things). Lift will be the young hotshot rebellious character who would get fired for insubordination if she weren't so good at her job (for examples of this archetype, see every single American action movie). Kaladin will have begun to seriously found and expand the study of psychiatry and therapy in Urithiru, and will spend most of his time on that, but he'll still come in to give pep talks to new Windrunners every once in a while. Most of this is unlikely, but I want it all to happen.

I am so interested in what the couple dynamics for human/singer couples might be. Since Singer forms can affect their behavior and attitude a bit I want to see how the human half responds. I want to see how emotional communication works when one can hear rhythms and the other can't. I'd love to see some scenes of Rlainarin domestic life in the back half!

I definitely thought it was around where he stopped wearing glasses too. But if the countdown started beforehand, likely not.
