Shardcast: Legion Reactions

With the release of Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds, we thought we'd do a spoilery Shardcast episode where we discuss our feels. There are things to talk about Lies of the Beholder, and so we dig deep into it now!

This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), the return of Evgeni (Argent) from World of Warcraft, and Grace (gatorgirl) whose microphone is somehow much worse despite the fact that she just moved and nothing else changed. It's a mystery.

Want a spoiler free look at the third Legion book? Check out Grace's review

User Feedback

My favorite Legion story was Skin Deep.  It felt like it went into a bit more depth (heh) and I really loved the ending, stopping the assassins by buying out the company that had hired them.  Having said that, reading Lies of the Beholder and seeing an Aspect named Mason mentioned was rather cool for me. :D

I do agree with the criticism on this podcast about it feeling really rushed, too short, too quick, without enough explanation about critical stuff, etc.  That was the feeling I had about the story as well.  I kinda hope Brandon doesn't listen to this one, though, because he seemed really invested in this.  At the release party he mentioned how this book is the most intensely personal thing he had ever written, and then everyone comes out and says they don't like it... that would hurt, I'd imagine.

The downfall of the aspects did seem pretty fast, but I think contacting Sandra was the catalyst for that.  We get a bunch of hints, mostly from Ivy, that meeting Ivy would doom the aspects. Ivy seems to blame the loss of Ignacio and the other guy on Sandra, implying that meeting up with her would cause more aspects to go away.

Stephen was already getting worse and subconsciously created Jenny to prepare for this downfall, but  Armando doesn't go nightmare until after contact with Sandra.  Once Sandra texts, Stephen's subconscious knocks the first domino down, starting the downward spiral.

Also, the cosmere is a Virtual Reality that Stephen's aspects inserted into the code. Leeds is Adonalsium and 16 aspects took over control from him. Hoid is J.C's interdimensional time ranger aspect trying to wake Leeds back up in that [redacted] wareshouse.

If they're gonna make this a TV show it has to be soon. Morgan Freeman NEEDS to play Tobias.

I feel, that read in any other way than the anthology, Lies of The Beholder would feel incredibly rushed, but, read in the anthology with the viewpoint that this is all one story, lies of the beholder is like the climax, and epilogue to Stephen's story. We resolve the conflicts that were set out in Legion, and explored in Skin Deep: The Aspects, and Sandra. It's almost like the final bit at the Grey Havens in LOTR. Lies of the Beholder is certainly not the best Legion story- but knowing how personal it was for Brandon, and how the end of LotB leaves you bittersweet, and kind of reflective- I can't see it ending any other way

I finally got around to listening to this book (and now this podcast), and I couldn't agree more!
