June 2022 Art Commission

The time has come! The end is nigh!

That is, the time to reveal our next art commission! The end of the wait to see it! This all sounded funnier in my head, but there's no going back, words written in a Patreon post are final and unchangeable.

So what do we have here? Jessica Liu, whose work you may have seen on Instagram (and if you haven't, that's why her name is linked!), agreed to tackle our June piece - Vivenna getting her Breaths from Lemex - and tackle she did! Between Vivenna's surprised/horrified expression, the design of the Breaths themselves (eat your heart out, Dan dos Santos, these are better!), and the chromatic aberrations throughout the image conveying the instability of Lemex's aura, it all fits together really nicely into a gorgeous illustration we could not be happier with!

A digital illustration of Vivenna from Warbreaker, at the moment the dying Lemex passes his Breaths to her. Vivenna, wearing a plain and modest white dress, has dropped to her knees in the middle of a room, her eyes and mouth open wide in horror, her hair bleached white. Lemex is also partially visible on the left side of the image, lying on a bed. A colorful ribbon-like BioChromatic Breath leavs his mouth, traverses the distance between him and Vivenna, snakes up around her body before striking at her mouth. The Breath itself shifts between all the colors of the rainbow and has an ephemeral look that resembles gas in some places, oil on water in others, and solid light in others still. The rest of the room is unremarkable and difficult to make out, except for the wild chromatic aberrations affecting most of the image, translating the instability of Lemex's aura into this visual medium.

I'm not sure if the artist intended it to look like a rainbow version of the Angel of Death from the Prince of Egypt with some mildly rapey vibes going on with Vivenna's but I really approve.

@Argent, are we able to ask these artists questions about what they were thinking on the forums or is that a Patreon only thing? I'd really love to hear their answers.

Unfortunately there aren't many ways to portrait a ribbon-like Breath leaving one person's mouth and entering another's without invoking certain imagery, especially if the recipient doesn't want it. I blame Brandon here. I can assure you rapey vibes never entered the conversion.

It's a neither thing, actually, most of the artists we work with don't hang out on the forums, and they certainly don't hold AMAs on our Patreon. Your best way of reaching out to them is through their socials and (occasionally, rarely) our Discord server where some of them hang out. I encourage all of them to post these commissions themselves, so you can always leave a comment there.

I really am happy with this depiction of Vivenna receiving her breath. I like the imagery of the affect it has on a person when they receive a lot of breath at once...I feel like this should have been book art!
