+Invocation Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) No, it's not about that Certain Someone. This one's about our erstwhile Odium, Rayse, or at least what's left of him. The man was incredibly Invested before his death, to the point that I think even if Nightblood were to shunt every other one of his victims to the Beyond directly (which I am not sure about by any means), he may be a unique case. If his Shadow did stick around and is now bopping around in the Cognitive somewhere, what's he up to? What are the odds of him plotting something? What do y'all think? I'm skeptical he would exist as a CS in any major capacity, but there was a fair bit of his physical form left over even after dropping the Shard, so maybe there's something drifting around...
Frustration Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Well Leras and Ati both left almost completly untouched bodies with almost no shadow to speak of.

The Leras we meet was an already fraying Cognitive Shadow and Ati did leave behind a Cognitive Shadow, he just chose to pass into the Beyond after asking "Vax?" and getting decked. The part of Rayse that got attacked seemed to have been primarily in the Cognitive and the Spiritual, given that it happened in a Vision. And Nightblood attacks on all three Realms so even the Physical aspect was badly damaged. It's the Cognitive part that becomes a Cognitive Shadow and it got eaten, so no, I don't think we need to worry about Rayse. Edited August 26, 2021 by Honorless 2

Besides, the Beyond does seem to actively draw people to it, so he might just have been exhausted and/or accepted his fate, rather than actively choosing.
Elegy he/him Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Rayse is definitely gone forever. There is no cognitive shadow left when Nightblood kills someone. Quote Questioner My question is not really a question, it's more of a theory. How Odium keeps the Fused around is more if he has them tied to his essence, so it's like he's essentially fishing them out of the Spiritual Realm and since their minds are left behind in the Cognitive Realm and their minds are *inaudible* damaged, because their spirits are separated and it just pulls them back. I'm 100% convinced Nightblood did kill the thunderclast, because Nightblood consumes all investiture, that's something I asked you back at Barnes and Noble a couple years ago, during Christmas and you said your soul is investiture. So my thought is, that thunderclast isn't coming back any time soon. Brandon Sanderson You are correct on that one. Questioner When I saw that, my thought was, "Yep, It's dead." Other people were like, "I don't know, will it come back?" Nope. Brandon Sanderson I'll tell you this. They have not run into something like this before, and there will be ramifications of what happened there. Questioner That is fun to know. Brandon Sanderson If you are used to death having no consequence, and suddenly your friend vanishes forever... Questioner Yeah I, know I already thought of that. They're going to fight over Nightblood. Brandon Sanderson Mmm. Idaho Falls signing (July 21, 2018) And if that's not enough for you, Brandon killed him off because he wasn't a threat anymore. So he's well aware that readers won't see Rayse as dangerous if he comes back: Quote Lass Adventurous Arith How did you decide to turn Taravangian into Odium? Brandon Sanderson [...] In Oathbringer, Dalinar did not fall to Odium. That is a huge blow to Odium, Rayse-Odium. The fact that at the end of book three he was defeated in a major way, and in book 4 he gets defeated again, this time by Kaladin. We have proven that two of our primary viewpoint protagonists of the Stormlight Archive are able to resist and defeat him. My opinion was that by that point in the Stormlight Archive, Odium would no longer, Odium-Rayse would no longer be a threat. You run into this in lots of long running epic fantasy series. I've talked a lot about how when I was designing Stormlight Archive, the things I had read in other long running fantasy series were a big part of why I designed it the way I did.
