The Corpse rolled its shoulders. It was a meaningless display as its bones bent the blade before letting it fall to the ground, rust evident on its surface as the sword started to wither away. Disregarding the piece of inferior metal, the Corpse turned to face Selill as if it didn't have a care in the world except for dealing death to this Narrator.

It lunged forward, pushing for the offensive as it flicked its wrists, forcing shards of Mordite through its flesh until its hands and arms were covered with the black spines. It swung wildly for the narrator, uncaring for what it struck.

They were clashing, fist on fist, in an inhuman scramble. Dark sparks seemed to emanate from each strike, wisping away into misty tendrils.

It was a creature of Mordite?

"Summon Corundum!" Selil shouted to whatever guards might remain.

"I won't ask you to come with me, but please... tell them I died in the travel. I probably should have, anyways."

You don't understand! There are things out there that'll hunt you down, things you have no hope of surviving against! Even Mom and Dad are scared of them.

The moment that the door creaked open, the Corpse leaped forward, hoping it would have distracted the Narrator. Snarling through its decaying throat, it forced every rib to puncture it's skin and point forward so that when it full body tackled the Dark Lord, every one of its Mordite bones would pierce his heart. This would be over quickly.

He stumbled, fell away, and crossed his arms in front of him. Selil growled, reverting back to the most basic of defenses.

This this really could kill him.

Selil warped away, vanishing and appearing across the hall. He gasped, catching his breath.

"A good thing the only things I'm good at are running and hiding, then," Night's Blossom said with a small smile.

The momentum carried the Corpse forward, but it rolled as it hit the ground to stop in a standing position. In an instant, it locked eyes on Selil, but paused at the newcomer.

Settling into a crouch, it prepared to either fight or flee. But first, a demand. "Let me . . . Kill . . . Pheo . . . Nix."

Corundum raised a finger. The Corpse's power twisted in response, answering to Corundum's command.

But what if they catch up? What if they find you? A Narrator, a withergeist... Or even another Ennuller, she thought.

The creature gasped, holding perfectly still as the terrible sensation rolled over it. "What . . ." It stopped speaking, and glared at the newcomer.

No... they can do much more than just kill you.

"In the name of Her Majesty Verdellia," Corundum recited, "You have been called into service."

The recitation meant nothing to the creature's ears, and it fought against this stranger's control. "Will not . . . Serve . . ." It performed its loose approximation to a growl, twitching and snarling.

Corundum frowned. "You have grown powerful. Arrogant. You have forgotten your place. You have forgotten your purpose."

"Do you genuinely believe that?"

"Yes! I mean... there's a chance! It's better than nothing!"

Vulpine raised a critical eyebrow. "Physical effort ain't your thing, is it?"

"What's it supposed to do?"

"Tell your father that I wish him well, Em." Night's Blossom unwove light and sound around her body, rendering herself imperceptible. She spoke anyways, knowing Emily would be able to hear. "You've been the best sister that I could ask for, and I love you into eternity and past it." Her voice shook as she spoke. "Goodbye."
