Marimba Mike Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Hey guys. I'm new here and to fantasy novels, but I've done my research and got interested in Brandon Sanderson, particularly the stormlight series. I read all the sample chapters and the intro and prologue as well and I am already hooked on The way of kings. I am ordering the novel and am curious as to whether i should get the hard copy to soft copy. Any suggestions?
SOM1else he/him Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I would go for a hard copy. I have found that the bigger a paperback book is the faster it wears out, also when books 2-10 come out they will be released in hardback form before softback, In my opinion it looks better when you have either all hard copies or all soft copies of a series on a shelf together rather then some hard and some soft. Also, if you have an Ereader I'm pretty sure that you can get a ebook version of the book for just a little bit more then the paperback version from Barnes and Noble/Amazon. I'm pretty sure most Ereaders can use either one or both of the file types used by those distributors so I would just find out what you are compatible with and make the decision from there. (Personally I like a physical copy of my books but if you don't mind it then an Ebook would be the best value as it would last you the longest)
CrazyRioter she/her Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I would get the hardback edition, the paperback edition doesn't include the artwork that's on the inside covers of the hardback, you can download it from Brandon's website, but it's more convenient to have it all in one place. The ebook edition is missing all the artwork on the covers and the interior.
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 The ebook has about the same artwork as the paperback, but the resolution isn't very good.
Chaos he/him Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Hardback. It feels better in the hand. Plus, it makes an excellent club. It is perhaps the finest weapon you can find. Clubbing someone with a paperback just isn't the same. 4
Kuri Shardweaver he/him Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Hardback. It feels better in the hand. Plus, it makes an excellent club. It is perhaps the finest weapon you can find. Clubbing someone with a paperback just isn't the same. This. Plus, a book this epic deserves to be as rock-solid as its writing.
Yados Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Some books don't really need to be hardback. Way of Kings is not one of those books. It's epic and collectible and benefits from the extra inner-cover art and larger illustration size. I assume it won't be THAT much more off Amazon as they discount HCs but not Mass Market Paperbacks.
lordofsoup Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 The thing is I wish that I had my WoT all hard cover, alas they are not, and the paperbacks are completely destroyed, after my brothers and I have read them. Granted we werent gentle but the hard covers have lasted much longer. Hard cover is much bigger, heavier, so if you need to carry it around with you get paperback, but other than that get hardcover.
Zas678 he/him Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 But then again, you're asking a die-hard fan site. If you ask most people, lots of them would probably say soft-cover. Although, you know what? It depends how "into" Brandon you are. If you think he's going places, and you really like his work, go for the Hardcover. If, on the other hand, you think he's an okay author, and you'll want to buy his books, but odds are low for you knowing the release date for his next book or rerererererereading his books, a softcover may suit you just fine.
Adrienne she/her Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I haven't read the paperback. After reading the hardback that was so heavy and awkward I purchased a few e-ink readers.
Kelek he/him Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I vote hardcover. The entire book is enhanced from the extra artwork and illustrations. I have the eBook and the hardcover, and the latter is definitely my favorite.
Soother he/him Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I have to say the hardcover. Considering I saw at the local bookstore paperbacks that looked like their spines were broken just from the shear SIZE of the book
