"Yeah, she . . ." Fischer shook his head as Riva left his direct line of sight, hardly noticing Wendy. "She's married to the general."

"The punishment for an adulterer is a fine and imprisonment, not the torture chambers." Ivian stared down at her. "As such, you, too, will face such a punishment for your strict disobedience to my royal decrees."

"What?!" Riva hissed. "I... What do you..." Her face screwed up with anger and she wished she could have him sent to her dungeons. "What will you do to me?"

"Seeing as how you have plenty of money to spare, I'm sure you'll be able to pay off your fine without issue." Ivian crossed his arms behind his back. "As such, you likely won't have to attend your prison sentence for long."

Wendy stood up on tiptoe and glared at him. "No. I hate Allivia as much as the next person and if I was anything like her then you'd know."

"No! You can't- I am the Ravene-" Her words died on her lips. She was in Ivian's power. And she hated it. "Ivian, please."

Nicolae growled, growing angry. It was a rarity that he ever got so heated. "Stop it, Basil!" he said, calling upon his height and his friend's first name to intimidate him. "Just stop. Just 'cause you're not with me no more doesn't mean you gots to go after my current lover."

"Perhaps," Ivian said, "if you swore an oath on your soul to mal to never commit your heinous crimes again, then I might be inclined to forgive you this one slip-up."

"I... I swear it." She shook with rage, unable to meet the king's eyes. "I can assume I will be executed if I break this oath?"

Fischer winced, the shouting catching him off guard. "I just want to be sure all tha' doesn't happen to ya again." He tried desperately to keep his voice even, and avoid shouting at Nico.

Wendy glanced between Nicolae and Fischer, a little panicked. How had the conversation gotten out of hand so quickly?
