I see a lot of people talking about the Heralds being tortured constantly on Braize, but am I the only one who understood it as the Fused having to catch them first?

I always assumed that the Heralds would fight, hide and resist until they were captured, and then the torture would start. Seeing Taln is the Herald of War and the one who trains soldiers, it would explain how he lasted so long if he just fought off the Fused and Voidspren for who knows how many years before finally being subjected to torture.

The stormfather says this yes.

BUT EACH TIME AFTER A DESOLATION, THE HERALDS RETURNED TO DAMNATION TO SEAL THE ENEMY AGAIN. TO HIDE, FIGHT, AND FINALLY WITHSTAND TOGETHER.

However the fused have a lot of time to get this working.

It does seem like it gets skipped over a lot, though.

Is there any confirmation on how long Taln spent getting tortured as opposed to going full Rambo on Braize (or the Heralds generally)?

Not for Taln but he was vastly outnumbered and in a hostile environment.  I think it may have been mentioned somewhere that they could hold out for a year maybe but I may have just dreamed that.

Also, remember that Taln is pretty crazy. He was known for taking difficult stands against the enemy and often winning but dying in the process. His fighting style and tactics do not seem the type that would be able to hold off capture for very long.

The heralds say that the spacing between the last two desolations was between six months and 2 years (coppermind is contradictory) and that someone broke essentially right after they were captured that last time. So approx a year of hide and seek before the torture starts is probably about right.
