You are free to decide for yourself which groups you belong to. ;-) My question was asked because it looks like you were attempting to counter any anti-Shallan argument, despite the fact that a minority of the Shallan hate stems from that. 1

No, I'm simply calling attention to one particular anti-Shallan argument, which struck me as vaguely hypocritical. I've already tried to make clear in my previous post here (in August) that everyone is perfectly entitled to like/dislike anything they want, and it's not something that needs to be "blamed" on anyone. I'm not looking for a fight, and perhaps I should have kept my thoughts to myself. 2

Is Shallan a realistic representation of DID because I have no idea. I am curious if readers have actually studied this disorder or if you simply assume that DID was represented properly/improperly. I genuinely want to know. For instance, is it realistic for patients suffering from DID to have full conversations with their various personalities? The only time Shallan was cringe was when talked down to Mraize after she didn't kill Kalek. If I had one complaint about this series, it is that the villains keep losing, while the heroes keep winning. The only time Team Radiant lost was when Alethcar fell. The only people who die are villains and people who are connected with Kaladin. And now Shallan has not only foiled Mraizes plans once again, but now she mocks him openly. How are we supposed to take the Ghostbloods seriously when they were bamboozled so easily? I experience it, and I can say that it is a very good and accurate portrayal. I do have conversations with my headmates. It is a real thing. I really love Shallan as I relate with her DID, and feel it is a really good portrayal of it, something I very rarely see in media. And I find comfort in it. Also, with Mraize, he likely is gonna come back and try to kill Shallan for betraying the Ghostbloods, I saw it as a matter of like, we didn't get the time to see them come out and merc off Shallan for her betrayal. So didn't see it as them getting "bamboozled so easily", but rather just betrayed and about to come out to strike. 1

SymphonianBookworm she/her Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 I absolutely hate Shallan Davar. I am not going to shame her for her dissociative identity disorder, but... one thing I noticed- WHEN JASNAH COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD, SHALLAN JUST THINKS HOW JEALOUS SHE IS OF JASNAH'S INTELLIGENCE AND BEAUTY. Anyone else realize that? When Jasnah arrived, Shallan's first thoughts were, "Oh wow, she's back. Damn, why does she have to look so pretty and be so smart? I feel so insecure about myself now." And then Shallan goes "Oh why is she bossing me around it's not like i really wanted to be her ward or anything-" and complains about her. I just wanted to say how much that made me mad... like, it's not okay that she didn't care that her mentor was alive...... 4

I just wanted to say how much that made me mad... like, it's not okay that she didn't care that her mentor was alive...... Thank you, this. The irony of certain people who get passive-aggressive in these types of threads is crazy(not speaking on anyone in particular). Whenever I have conversations on issues about Shallan's character, it's always brushed off as "...we don't know enough about her yet" or "...you're just not being understanding or you don't understand mental illness." To the people that say they can empathize with Shallan's predicament because of similar experiences but in the next paragraph, assert the empathy levels of someone they don't know on the Internet, are a joke. Just because someone does not want to read about DID in detail as much as you, does not mean they are necessarily ignorant of it or don't understand the writing's value to the plot. At the end of the day, this is an escapist fantasy that takes place on a different world. Mental health in fantasy is a decent concept but you really run the risk of disconnecting with a good number of readers because let's be honest, most readers might not have the time to read a book series with over 100,000+ words AND gain a grounded understanding of the mental illnesses of the multiple main characters. Or people, just don't want their moods dulled or to be reminded of things in their lives that they wish to avoid. I'll add another caveat, I would put that burden of understanding on the book to express that. Objectively, I can't make a claim on whether or not Brandon is portraying this in the best way, nor do I wish to. If it clicked for you, that's a tick in Brandon's box but if by four books in and people still aren't being swayed, their feelings are valid also. My opinion: Shallans says and does some outlandish things that she's never held to account for. Is this exclusive to her? Nope. But it's a trend that I and others have noticed. I think her character is consistent in the sense of being someone struggling with a very complicated set of problems but her redeeming qualities are outshined by her very quasi-sociopathic tendencies in regard to people she claims to be her friends and family. Sure, she's a lightweaver, their orders don't do oaths so they can be more inconsistent, etc, etc, etc. Rant over. 3
