And this formula is slowly increasing your word count goal to ease you into writing more?

Nathrangking he/him Posted November 5, 2021 Posted November 5, 2021 Between last night and today I wrote 2001 words for a total of 7198 in 4 days. I missed yesterday and likely will not finish in time. I'm on the fence if I should quit now as the goal may just be too far out of reach. This is my first time participating and I feel defeated. 5 days in and I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. I won't be done by the end of the month and that was the whole point of this venture was to see if I could well likely I can't. Is it even worth going further?
Trutharchivist he/him Posted November 5, 2021 Posted November 5, 2021 I'm a little surprised to find myself trying to encourage people, since I'm even further behind and usually pessimistic, but I think you should keep going. Look, the destination is very important, but so's the journey. So perhaps you won't be able to reach 50,000 words in a month. But I think you can start a habit of writing every day. And that way, even if it won't be at November the 30th, one day you will have written a novel. That's at least what I tell myself when I see that I never wrote more than 400 words in a day. Even though I kind of think I might be incapable of keeping forward. So, I don't know if it's going to help you, but I hope it will. Shabbat Shalom! And good luck in writing! And remember: Journey before Destination! 1

I won't be done by the end of the month and that was the whole point of this venture was to see if I could well likely I can't. Is it even worth going further? That is how I felt last year, and I did end up quitting a little over halfway through. NaNoWriMo just wasn't a high enough priority, and it mentally exhausted me. However, what I probably should have done is revised my goal to one that I could accomplish. That is what I did this year. I set a ridiculously easy goal of 100 words per day, and am probably hitting more like 300-400, but it feels better to accomplish an easy goal and form a habit, than to try something too hard and quit. Last year when I quit it felt like a burden off my shoulders. I love writing, but that commitment was a bit much, and not important enough to me. I'd recommend revising your goal to something more manageable, and maybe next year trying a little more. Steady increases in goal amounts until you can do 50k in 30 days. It's up to you. But, if you like mentally toughening yourself up through self-inflicted psychological torture I say keep going. (I'm not being sarcastic. I run cross country and often push the limits of my willpower. There's something to overcoming a seemingly insurmountable challenge.)

Channelknight Fadran Posted November 7, 2021 Posted November 7, 2021 @Nathrangking, the best advice I can give is to not take it so seriously. Nobody's going to shame you for not getting it done; and especially not your fellow authors 1
Frustration Posted November 8, 2021 Posted November 8, 2021 Just found Pixar's 22 rules for storytelling, and they are the answers to all my problems.

If I don't finish by the end of the month I'll be that much closer to actually completing it. 1
