"Farewell," said Kemos, ending the communication and switching to the Last Breath. In a few quick words, he described the time and place of meeting, as well as the terms of the planned deal.

"Will you be able to make it in person?" asked Melanie after he had finished speaking.

"Hopefully," responded Kemos. "Depends on whether or not Brezon is willing to take me..."

"He can't refuse," said Melanie hopefully. "Not with how important this is."

"Sure," said Kemos, "but that doesn't mean he'll be happy about it..."

It was midnight in T'Telir. A time for dealings in the dark, indeed.

The Awakened statues seemed more menacing than ever in the half-moonlight. All too easy to imagine one coming to life and cutting you in half before you even had a chance to respond...

But that was unlikely. Unless one knew the key phrase, the statues were just that: statues. Far more dangerous were the figures lurking at their feet, waiting.

Kemos gasped as the phantom frigidity of the Void was replaced by the warmth of the tropical atmosphere. It was partially a gasp of relief. He didn't think he'd ever quite get used to long-distance shadow travel. And to think, the true masters could travel between universes.

Besides him, Brezon snorted. Kemos sighed internally. More than likely, Brezon would grow into one of those masters. Which was fine. Kemos was perfectly happy with his position as leader of the Ashborn. Besides, they couldn't all be prodigies.

His sour thoughts were cut short by someone calling his name. He turned to see Melanie hurrying towards him with a smile on her face. "Kemos!" she said. "You managed to convince Brezon, I see."

Brezon snorted again. "He should not need me," he said in a voice full of irritation. "He is sect leader. Should he not be capable of shadow-travel?"

Melanie looked like she was about to say something, but her response was cut short by Psydr, leader of the Myrkaal. "Cease the chatter," he said authoritatively. "The Curse of Death comes."

A figure emerged from the shadows. He was almost invisible at midnight, with his black clothing and black mask, and that served him just fine. He didn't care how diverse the clothing was in T'Telir, he was sure that his clothing would be noticed.

"And so we meet."

"Indeed," said Melanie, shooting a scowl at Psydr before he could cut in. Kemos smiled at that - he didn't like the man's overbearing attitude either. Melanie continued. "We have an offer I think you'll find... intriguing."

She gestured to one of her colleagues, who pulled out a cube about a centimeter in each dimension. It was colored a metallic black, and radiated destructive energy.

"We have reason to believe we will need some of your... particular skills." said Melanie. "The cube is, in part, payment. However... we hope that it can be more than just a transaction." She took the cube from her assistant and began to roll it around in her hand. "Our leader knows the value of building bridges. Two armies can do a lot more than one, after all..."

"Very well. You say you may need some of our skills. Can you elaborate?"

"From what we understand, you are de facto experts in universe demolition," explained Melanie. "There happens to be a certain universe we are in need of destroying- or, at least, heavily damaging." She smiled, tossing the blightstone cube into the air and catching it deftly. "And there are plenty of applications for your weaponry, even on smaller scales."

He felt himself smile. "Which universe would you be talking about, now?"

"One owned by a certain goddess of the name Rishmaveta," said Melanie. "She holds captive one of our own."

His smile deepened. They weren't currently using any universes matching that description. "What level of destruction are you requesting? Left in shambles, rendered uninhabitable, or utterly obliterated?"

Melanie shrugged. "As much damage as possible," she said. "The captive is immortal, so you don't need to hold back."

"I will see what we can do. Should we meet up again soon?"

"As soon as is convenient," said Melanie. "Should we do it on your world, next time?"

"My world specifically, or the world of the Curse of Death?"

Melanie raised an eyebrow. "Whichever world your organization finds most convenient."

"At this point, there isn't really any world we'd consider inconvenient. How about we meet in Elendel in a week?"

"Sure. Anything that works."

Melanie smiled, moonlight glinting in her eyes. "Farewell, then. May the stars smile upon your travels."
