Spoiler Shallan, as a Lightweaver, is able to access Shadesmar through her use of the Surge of Transformation - or Soulcasting. Jasnah is able to access Shadesmar as well, presumably through her use of the Surge of Transportation as an Elsecaller. In this case, what's the difference between these Surges when it comes to Shadesmar? If you can get there with Transformation, why need Transportation at all?
Quantus he/him Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 Transformation/Soulcasting lets you sort of co-exist in both, but you actually leave the physical realm whole the way you do with Transformation. We dont know if Soulcasting alone can get you there in full physical, capable-of-worldhopping form, but we dont know you cant (WOB below). There is a Deleted Scene from WOR that covers when Jasnah accidentally did one instead of the other, with some discussion of practical differences. This is why she could not get out at Spoiler Thaylen City on her own. Jasnah is able to move in and out of Shadesmar physically. This is the difference.

We are not fully aware of the capabilities of the surges of transformation and transportation. Our understanding is speculative. Brandon has said different things about a Lightweaver's capacity to fully transition at different times but we do know from Hessi that Elsecallers were the best at navigating shadesmar.
Kendelian he/him Posted April 3, 2023 Posted April 3, 2023 My theory is that Transformation is more so the user seeing what their Cognitive Aspect can see and then convincing the Cognitive Aspects of different objects to change, whereas Transportation lets the user just drop into Shadesmar.
