"I'd prefer to know which type of duel we're doing first, but knives."

"Our duel is first blood drawn. The method by blade. We require a judge. Shall we?" I exit the tent slowly and walk several paces. I turn and face the entrance of the tent.

Hareon follows him and stands just outside of the entrance, pulling a couple of knives out of her bag. The rest are concealed in her clothes.

"Yeah. I mean explore the camp. I like knowing my way around."

Mentally I sigh. This is going to be quick. I wish that it did not have to come to this. Two curved one and a half foot daggers of light appear in my hands. They are double edged and sharp enough to shear through steel plates. I plant my feet and hold the blades at high and low guard. My back is straight and a single focused gaze appears in my eyes. Something primal and ancient appears in them. Everything, but my opponent disappears to the edges of a thick mist. The sun's light pools around me. My breath syncs with the winds. Beat by beat my heart slows until it is a crawling steady rhythm. I beckon her forward and then return my blade to position. Blood lust screams in my mind. It howls and fills me to the brim. I grin baring my teeth.

Hareon grinned and took up a fighting position, preparing her daggers.

"Well... alright, then. Where to first? That tent or that other tent?"

"I'm thinking that tent." Queen pointed, then began walking in that direction.

"I was... joking. How are you at climbing trees?"

Queen turned to look at him, cocking an eyebrow. She then scanned the area, her eyes landing on a very climb-able tree. Challenging Fadran with her eyes, she suddenly sprinted toward the tree, jumping and grabbing the lowest branch, then began scaling it.

"Thank you."

As she walked into the encampment, Herate looked around fondly. The camp had grown while she was gone, though not by much. A smaller crowd of soldiers than she had expected began to gather around them, whispering.

"She's back,"

"-thought she was dead,"

"She's returned,"

"-back from the dead-"

"-captured-"

"The Lady General--"

She heard the last one the most, and her heart began to pound. "Will one of you go get the general?" she asked, voice beginning to shake.

Several soldiers turned around and ran back through the crowd. Herate turned and paced anxiously.

Daolan ran his hands through his hair again, looking away from the report he was reading. Whoever knew that running an army took so much paper? he pondered. It was a stupid question, of course. People had been thinking that since there had been armies to run and paper to run them with. His thoughts drifted yet again, and he tried to force himself to continue reading. It didn't work.

It wasn't that he was usually like this, in fact it was usually the opposite, but Herate had been on his mind a lot lately. He had been getting this weird feeling, like he could feel her getting closer. That was silly, though. If Herate were here, she would scold him for 'letting his imagination run wild again'. He could almost see her now, frowning playfully as she went on about whatever was on her mind right then. He shook his head, trying to rid himself of these thoughts, and turned back to his report reluctantly.

Footsteps pounded outside his tent, and he stood, fearing the worst. What else could bring a messenger so quickly? Three soldiers burst into the command tent, panting.

"General!" said one.

"What is it?" asked Daolan, off-put by the knowing, excited look on the soldiers' faces.

"Sir, there's someone here to see you. It's urgent!" said the second soldier.

"Who? How urgent?" asked Daolan, rounding his desk to stand before the soldiers.

"Very urgent, sir. You need to come now," replied the first soldier.

"They're on the west side of camp, sir, they're waiting for you there!" added the third.

Daolan motioned to the doorway. "Well? Show me!" Then he followed the soldiers as they went back through the door and began running toward the west path into the camp.

The crowd parted, and Herate saw a familiar face. One she had never dared to hope she would see again. He looked worn, his hair and uniform out of place and messy.

"Daolan..." she breathed, mouth curving upward. They stood there for a split second, Daolan's mouth opening wide with surprise, then broke and rushed to each other, Daolan enfolding her in his arms. He pulled back and held her for a moment at arms length, examining her and grinning openly, then drew her closer, kissing her squarely on the mouth. She sighed and melted into him, remembering how good it felt to be with him.

After a long moment, Herate took a small step backward, reluctantly breaking the kiss. "Herate," said Daolan, his eyes roving her face. His deep voice gave her chills, just like the first time they met. "Herate."

Herate smiled, tears welling in her eyes. "It's so good to be back," she said.

"Yep! We've got an ex-god, a well of pure magical power, someone who can make force fields, someone who can make fire, someone who has these 'gun' things, and... this!" Fadran held up his Channelblade. "I can make portals with it."

I don't move. Again I motion her forward before  returning my daggers to their place. Raging blood lust flies. Every cell within me sings. A symphony born of countless eons begins to play. Louder and louder it becomes. It weaves a cloak around me.

Hareon spun, tossing three knives in quick succession as she moved to the side.

I don't even blink as the knives fly toward me. My rage calls the wind and knocks the daggers aside. When my opponent moves to the side my eyes follow her. I condense the air surrounding me. My grin grows wider.

She jumped, twisting as she flew and tossing another knife.

The knife slams against my wall of air and drops to the ground.

Finally! The growl nearly eascpes me, but I keep it caged. A beast within me struggles and longs to taste carnage. It's time to end this. Our voices join as one. I spin toward her. In an instant the light surrounding me bends leaving me invisible to the naked eye. I drop the winds that surround me and move off to the side before leaping forward.
